The Treasurer presented a communication from Jobn Fill, formerly teacher in the public sebools for the third district, claiming a sum of money ($29 08 7-31) alleged to be due him for services yeadered in that capacity On motion, the communication was referred to the sub-board of the third district, with instrac- tions to report thereon at the next regular meeting of the Boaid Various bills were presented by the Treasurer; which were approved and ordered to be paid. B. Berry, examined the fol- lowing witnesses: orge W. Conneli, sworn—My brother and I Were passing Devlin’s feuce, aud saw three men tussling together; saw an old lady there; they seutiied till they set in the div of the yard, saw Mr. Deviin throw something like a stone; saw the elder Devlin strike Mr Berry; then they clinched him; think beth the Devlins bad their coats on; saw Mr. Smith come is; saw Berry go to Smith and teil him to vo cut, and Smith went out, am certain the elder Devlin knocked Berry down: heard no noi<e mede. Enos Ferguson, sworn.—Knows Mr. Berry in- timately; never heard of his being married; heard a letter had been received so stating; when be came in the city he always sent a hack for his (Berry's) wife to come to his hotel; knows that his wife and bim were on good terins. After consultation, the jury returned the follow- ing verdict: hat the said Thomas B_ Berry went to the house of Mrs. Mary Ann Devlin, on the afternoon of the 6th day of April, i535, for the purpose of procuring a clean shirt, where bis wife was stay- ing at the time (Mrs. Mary Ann Devlin being her mother); while at the said louse an altercation eccurred between deceased, Joun 8. Deviin and James P. Devlin, his two brothers-in-law, from which it appears from the evidence that the said Berry received tive wounds in the bodyand neck, ¢wo of which were fatal; said wounds being given with « bowie knife about 6% inches in length, supposed to be in the bands of James P. Devlin. the said John 8 Deviin baving knocked the de- ceased down and held him while Jas. P. Deviin inflicted the said wounds, which prodnced death within five minutes And the jury also find that the deceased was poor, and without Property. Tue Agrestep.—A Heissler, who is held in jail for the murder of young Stoop, is a German, aged twenty-two years. He served a term in the District penitentiary for firing the stables of Mr Wise. He was recently arrested for the assault ou the steward of the British Minister. An alii was proved for him in that case, but a large pis- tol was found on bim when arrested George W. Jobnson, also in jail as an accom- pice of Heissier in the muider of Stoop, is a Washingtonian, aged eighteen. Hewas arcested as a participant in the riot in which Murphy was &illed and officer Harrover dangerously wounded, Sut was dismissed. as no overt act could then be proved against bim Yaa Loman Jobnson, aged twenty-four, a Washiagtonian, also arrested as an accomplice of Heisster, is said to be the husband of the woman for producing whose death William B. The Court then took up the case of Virginia Burchand Sarah Thomas, charging them with Keeping a disorderly house. The jury nd & ict of guilty in the case of Sarah T! and not guilty in the case of Virginia Burch. James Waller was brought to the bar charged with malicious mischief, by willfally putting out the eye of a horse belonging to Gilbert Van- derwerken, while engaged in grooming it. The jury found a verdict of guilty as indicted. [ees Martage was sentenced to pay a fine of 20 Charles Dalman, alias Chas T. Elliman, was sentenced to imprisonment in the penitentiary for a space of two years. Sarah Thomas was sentenced to one month the county jail and a fine of $1. The Court in giving this sentence remarked that it would have been much more severe, but for the fact that she was poor and wretched, an outcast, and the mother of a youny child, who was without a pro- tector. James Walters was sentenced to three months in the county jail, and pay a fine of $10. To-day, the court took up the case of George Dethi alias Delli, in which the defendant was charged with keeping a disorderly house. The jury found a verdict of not guilty. Tue District tn Conoress.—In the Senate, yesterday, Mr Brown, form the Committee for the Disirict of Columbia, to which was referred the bill authorizing the organization of the Fire Department in the District of Columbia, reported it back without amendment and recommended its passage aes Also, from the same committee, to which was referred the memorial of the lay members of the Roman Catholic Churchs in the District of Co- lumbia, reported « bill relating to the manner of holding and transmitting chureh property therein. Mr. Brown presented a memorial from the Rev A. G. Sessford, the treasurer of the theatre, was assaulted on the night before last, at the restaurant of Mr. Han- cock, by a party ef rowdies, a part of whom were Washingtonians. and a part from Alexandria. He had stepped in there to see a gentleman, and while standing in the bar-room: was assaulted and struck several times bya inan named Barch, who stood facing him, and at the same time he received severa! blows from some four others who were inthe rear.
