The man acd his wife imunediately left Washington, aban- doning the yirl and went to Baltimore. Mr. Willard, on bearing the girl’s story, telegraphed to Mayor Tiemann, who at once made inquiry about the matter. The mother of the ft was found, and made an affidavit setting forth the facts of the case. At the Mayor’s request the girl was detained at the botel until the police could bring hertothiseity. Ofticers Barry and Lusk, of the Fourteenth precinct, were detailed to investi- vate the affair, and on the following day they ar- rested Dr. F.C. The only fire compa- nies on the spot were the Northern Liberties and the Metropolitan Hook and Ladder Company, but owing to the entire abseuce of water, the engine Was of no use. This morning the scene of the fire was occu- pied by a large number of pe:soas, among whom Were the sulferers by the disaster, who were taking over the ashes to recover money and other valuables which had been left in the rooms in the burry of removal.
