LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. LecTUR® aT THE SairHsovian —The closing lecture of Mr. Gajani was delivered at the Smitb- sonian Institution to a large and appreciative an- dience on Monday evening last. His subject was the “Vatican of Pagan Rome.’ Mr. G. first urged that common opinion Tespeeting the origin of the name “Vaticano” is erroneous. He said the bill which bears this title was, long before the origin of the Roman nation, used as a place for the performance of religious rites by the Ktruscans. The god, or orecle, of the hill, was believed to have fie form of an infant. and hence the name of bis abode was called Vatiean, from raftrea. the cry of anew-born child. This god was net a dweller in temples, preferring rather the trees of the forest, therefore, the Etruscan priests, of soothsayers, had never erected for him any place of worship, although one of the trees onthe Will was marked as his especial abiding = or as the orarelum, by having several rass plates nailed to it. ‘This tree, the historian Tacitus, tells us was still Standing in bis day, and it is also spoken of by a later historian in connection with the Caligulian gardens. ‘Thus the theary that Rome is older than history de. clares itto be by nearly one th years is destroyed, for this tree would to his- tory, have been nearly a thousand years old when it ts last inentioned, and that period is a pretty good age even for # tree When Rome was built, the Tiber river formed the boundary between the Romans and Etruscans, and the Vatican Hill, being @p the east side, was in the possession of the latter. It finally, how- ever, after repeated struggles, passed into the hands of the Romans, and they continued to hgld it as asacred place, even as the Etruscans regard- ed it before them. Their soothsayers became priests of the god of the hill, and performed the same religious rites there as were practiced by their predecessors. ‘They never attained, how- ever, that character for accuracy of predictions Which the Etruscan priests had won, and among intellectual Rormans there was but little respect felt, either for the god Vattica or his priests. (Casar sald of them, that his only wonder was that they conid go through their iasane mummeries without laughing at each other. Later tn the history of Rome, the Vatican Hill was used as the site for cirenses, where festivals and games in honor of the gods were celebrated Here it was that the impious orgies of Caligula and bis sor were held. On this hill Caligula bailt temples to bimself, and en- forced worsbip from his slaves and sabjects, was 4 pod, was the sit 1s Which thix monomaniacal Em- Perot eveeted for the accommodation of the people ef Rome, while they were engaged in games in his own bonor. Inthe reign of Nero, that monster adorned the Vaticano stiil farther with 1 ifi- cent buildings and beantifal wardens, and from its summit he wished to survey the destruction, by fire, of the Eterwal City, that he might rebuild it and claim the honor of bein bnildi can. 4 ” cially the tomb which he built there- ‘The lecturer said nd es) on, were Hieewise described that the bill beeame a sacred place to the Chris fians during the r pf this om rch, for be first compelled them to anre d labor, and that, toa, of the severest and most menial kind, n the buildings be was erec nd. besides this, put great numbers to death in the circus for their religion’s sake. Thus consecrated by the suiferings and blood ef the early martyrs of Christianity, the Christians became to regard the Vatican with similar vere atien as that they sub- sequently entertained for tue Catacombs, which for vears furnished them secure hiding places from their enemies The lecturer next noticed the Vatican in con- nection with the triumphal entrees of the vic- torions Roman Generals and Emperors. Heit Was, that after reaching the city with their v torlous armies they halted to prepare for th Jet7, the highest honor which their vow r could accord them. Before going into tly y they off red at the Vatican te mple expiatory sacrifice for their misdeeds, performed the % lutions, and assumed the trimmplal robes Procession then crossed the Tiber ona bridge ex- pressly erected for snc occasions. id after per lorming a somewhat circuitous march stopped ata temple in the city, wh ces incom memoration of the victory e made. One of these pageants, that in which the conquering generals were Flavius Vespasian and bis son Titus, and the conquests celebrated those of the etties of Babylon and Jermsalem, was especially described by the lecturer, The order of the cortese was particularly cited, and the lecturer said that on its arrival at the temple within the city, before the sacrifice took place, a herald an- nounced that ~imon Gorges, the Jewish Generat, had been strangled in the dun; Until this murderous deed was a Piished and an- nouneed. said Mr.-G , the festival could not have proceeded. as the law required that on ail such casions a prisoner of distinction must be strangled in the prison. The lecturer narrated numerous other matters in connection with the his‘ory of Pagan Rome, which were not strictly in the line of his discourse, and although mere historical reminiscences, were nevertheless very entertaining The history of the Vatican, af.er the Chris- tianization of Rome, was briefly sket« as time did not prevent the lecturer fatied any rema ks on its present appearance. The one great idea of his lecture was, that during all the civil transmutations through which Italy has passed since a period prior to any recorded, or even traditionary history which bas descended to us, the Vatican bill has ever been dedicated to Teligionsures. Whether possessed by Etrisean, Roman, Vandal, or Christian, that mount bas still been a place for worship. and has escared the desecration which was often visited on other Portions of the city of Rome Nationa Axt Coxveytion —Aflter our re- Perter left the room yesterday morning, the cou- stitution, whieh had been submitted and wax then being discussed by sections, was further de- bated, perfected. and finally fully adopted A disconrse was then delivered, by Brownlee Brown, nthe * Reistions of the Ideal to the Res Gis was full of interest, and, as a compesitio rritsab ureed of praise On its conclusion, Rembrandt Pea ad- ‘d the Convention on the manifold advon tages to be derived from a unity of action ou the part of tik artists of this country sist of the offt- on and thiee other members— d, to transact any business for the then adjonrned to meet again av in January, i855 Last evening. Ourarticle was angrily commented upon by a portion of the Richmond press, who seemed willing rather that the Father of his Country should be perpetuated for theeves of future generations in this ridiculous and in- consistent attitude, than that the Richmond sta- tue should be dethroned, and the business of making copies of the statue ‘‘to order” interfered with. On Saturday night, in bis lecture upon the portraits of Washington, the venerable Rem- brandt Peale, and no better anthority could be desired, stated in so many words, that Hondon’s statue is objectionable from the theatrical air given to it by a projection of the chin and eleva- tion of the head, and by which the forelfead is made to spEee retreating. We may, therefore, consider the question settled Mr. Peale exhibited a colossal monochrome he has executed, in which the admirable likeness of the Houdon bust is retained, and the defective attitude of the Houdon statue avoided. VANDENHOFF’s Reavincs —The current polit ical exeitement has caused a diminished atten- dance for some nights at all places of amuse- ment, and Mr. Vandenhoff had a less audience than He might otherwise have counted upon. Mr. Vandenhoff is so well known, and in this city expecially is so favorably regarded, that it wonld be lost time to dwell upon his pungent yet polished satire, and his wonderful grace of de- livery. “ Not to know him argues one’s self un- known,”* and we shall therefore merely say that his ** Dash at the Doings of the Day,’’ was one continued series of brilliant bits, delivered with epigrammatic point, and which delighted every auditor. On Thursday he gives his admirable ‘ Shaks- perean Olio ;"’ and on this occasion Lord Nepict, Sir Wm Gore Ousely, and other notables have signitled their purpose to be present. AN OvtRacrous FrLiow.—Yesterday, a col- ored man named Julius Watlace, who has just returned to this city, after service in the coast survey, got ‘on a bust” and went to the houses of Isabella Penny and Elizabeth Herbert, and after whipping the “ wimmen,’’ bezan a general attack on their furniture, smaxhing things at a rapid rate. The Gas Company is making aneffort to secure the consent of the property holders’ on Water street to have their mains run along said street and the same lighted with gas. The lighting of Ihis street at night, we think, would prove a reat protection, not only to the property located upon it, bnt also to the large quantities of flour and other merchandise, lumber, wood, &¢., gen- erally stored away contignous to it, to say noth- ing of the vast amount of mischief fret uently cominitted inthis quarter at night, which the lighting of the streets would, likely, prevent. ye would advise the individual who was ennght loitering about the east end of Water st., in the immediate neighborhood of the lumber yards, &c., to be careful, as he may not be aware that a strict watch—private—is kept in that lo- cality every night. As be hasalready been pretty strongly suspected, if caught in that Coy f again he may not get off quite so easy as he di last night. Messrs.
