oar = LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Tur Cranity Lectcss.—The leeture of the Hon. Edward Everett on “Charity,” and for the denefit of the poor of this city, was delivered at the Smithsonian Institution last evening. audience was very large, and comprised the elite and fashionable of onr ciffzens, es well as many members of both houses of Congress. The Ma- rine Band was in the gallery, whence they oltiedieaenael The | ebrated in this city—bya ‘ Sdakadnhaitiianahisie rt CrLesnation ov St. Parnicx's Day.—Oddly enough, St. Patrick's Day, this year, is neither stormy ner blustery; in fact, it came in as “ mild asa lamb,” and promises to goout in the same docile manner, This year the day is doubly cel- -. of gentlemen who are to have aset-downof theo id-time sortat Mun- let's snioon, aud by the Catholic Total Absti- nence Soclety, who wind up their celeb:ation of the day dinner, on temperance principles, at the Assen:ly Rooms. This Society, to the num- poured forth rich music for the entertainment of | ber of some four hundred persons, made a fine those assembled wati! the arrival of the lecturer. Mr. Everett made his appearance accompanied by the Hon. Secretaries Cass and Thompson aad Mayor Magruder. The latter gentieman requested that if avy attaches of the ress were present they would abstain from mak- je a report of the lecture, as Mr. E. is under obligation to deliver it in several other cities. and be does not, therefore, wish it to be published. Mayor Magender then introduced the lecturer We feel under obligations to comply with the Tequest of Mr. Everett, but xball nevertheiess marks. On being introduced by the Mayor, - commenced by alluding in general terms to the recent financial revalsion and the conse- quent distress Y, ned to thi country, aithoug , but Iter tended through. nfed- eracy of the wo: tions of trade, themselves and families by the fruits of their tabor, suddenly found themsetves thrown out of employment. their resources cut off, and them- selves and families redaced to beggary and want tue severity of their fate rendered many desper- ate, and they became, from honest citizens, tit tis to be pressed into tempta‘ion and crime their nevessities. Enlarging wpon this sub- t, the eloquent lecturer appealed to the bearts bis bearers, tn behalf of these sufferers, and urged that they are entitled tu a more active ex- eroise of syinpathy than the puor under ordinary clreamstances. It was, however, no part of his basiness te dilate on the causes which led to this revulsion. His errand here was cleady accom plished, he urged, aud the aud Litre yard themselves ax really admiuistering to the object more than aay thing he sbaiisay. That ob- Ject is to procure something for the aid of the poor yn Washington city. and if the audience shall not think when he ts done that they hive obtained the worth of their money, they can console them- selves with the refiection that the poor have got their money. Mr. K. then proceeded to urge the necessity of organized action, especially in large cities, for the rehef of the poor. When ieft to ind!- vidual charity, those who are rea! nerone are ex ‘d to contianal imposition, while the truly needy are apt to receive but 2 small share of the benefits ofcharity. He related several anecdotes illustrative of the rascality which Is often perpe- trated under the cloak of mendicity. One of these occurred In Phitadelphia, where a littie xirl related toa benevolent hearted lady a piteous story of want and woe. Her father, she s was sick, and the entire family were most mise:- ably destitute. So well didthe child play ber part that the lady bestowed a muniticent largesa of money and victnals, and bade her come again This invitation was accepted, and the child called again. Finally the jeremiade of the little mendicant was changed The father, she said, had died, and there were no means to bury him. The purse of the lady again poured out its con- tents for relief, but she asked the child where sbe lived, and promised to call and assist the wretched family still more. She did call, and found ail was as the child bad said, but on leav- 19g the house she accidentally iefi her purse. and what was her surprise on returning for it to find the dead man sitting up in bis cottin count- ing over the pieces it contained. several other enecdotes of rascality of this description we:e toid as jag occurred in this country Mr. Everett then gave some humorous accounts of Enropean mendicants. A:nong these was one efan American gentleman who spent a winter al Soranta, in the kingdom of Naples. He gavea small sum toa beggar, and this led to oti the craft flocking around bim for alms. ut the time of his departure the entire c bis regular beneficiari parts of the city and t was no less than ninet The ory bands of beggars in the Eurepean cities wa’ described, aud some of the rules of their ment related. The lecturer next proceeded to no tory of charity or rather of charitable institutions. He said that prior to the days of Christianity very little charity was exercised, but oa the rise of the Christian Church this was instituted as one o its chief features. He paid a very bigh aplis ment to some of the older charitable as<ccia' ions of the Catholic Church, and especially to t Sisters of Charity, and the venerable founder of that order, st Vincent de Paul. He alsoalluded eeeee te the charitable organizations of Eng- lane The doctrine of some political economists, who Oppose charitable institutions, was next Lakes up and refuted, and the eloquent lecturer referred with emphatic deuunciation to the creed of Mal- surroanding © abo govern- thus, whe contended that a ron destitute of the means for his subsistence, or unable to get sutil- cient employment to earn those means, was not needed in the world and bad. therefore, no right to live. Following this with numerous ropsodic enco- k miums on charity, in the course of whieh Mr availed himseif of quotati Wh Val ions sta ard suthors, he came at last to notice the extra at foibles and follies of the presentage, whieh ebill the hearts of me: t render thein callous of the wants of their fellows ile drew a tare here of a poor girl, who was unable to obtain employment, suffering from want and destitution without hope, money, or friends, and benet every side with temptation.
