LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. ArTEMeT at Ixranticipg —About 7 o’clock Sunday morning a little son of L. Ricker kicked a football Into a sewer on C atreet, between Ninth and Teath, and while trying to recover it he heard the cry of a child in the sewer. He told bis father, who went directly tn search, and after crawling up the sewer about fifty feet he found the infant some three feet from a smal! opening in the mises of Mr. Jno. T. Berkeley, dyer, who bad al also heard the Gy te the sewer and was assistance to get ebild out. About § gentleman reported the case to the Captain of the Guard, and stated that the infant was at bis house. Capt. Mills went to the place where the child was found, and met Messrs. Ricker and Berkeiey, who toid him they sus- ‘ted that a servant of Mr. B. was the mother. Mes , midwife, who had dressed. the child, accompanied Capt. Mills to the house of Mr. Berkeley, and questioned the girl; bot she denied knowing anything of the matter. After being placed in the ha of Mr. Bangs, how- ever, she admitted that it was ber child and that she put it there for fear of her motber. Justice Donn was sent for, and the girl, Louisa Parker, colored, was committed to jail for Court. Wasuinxeton Tuzatre.—Very much obliged is everybody to the managers for securing My. Charles Mathews for another week. ‘This is our last chance thoagh, poz, as he is to appear in Richmond next week. By the way, what a pro- lific brain this same Chas. Mathews must have! Night after night he bas presented us with new and brilliant patos of his own, and yet be opens the week with a fresh budget, and of a yet richer aud more promising look. To-night, the performance commences with the extravaganza entitled “Take that Girl away.” Mr. Charles Rocket, (originally played by him,) Mr. Chas. Mathews; Mr. Septimus Poddle, Mr. Whiting ; Mr. Sexe Mr.J.M Dawson; Mr. Cattle, Mr. H. Rassell; Miss Isabel Poddle, Mrs. Chas. Mathews ; Miss Jenny Poddle, Miss Tree ; Dinah, Mrs. Jno. To-morrow night Mr Mathews will appear as Augustus Trinkiet, the Wizard, in the comical magical extravaganza of ‘The Great Gun Trick.’ Mrs. Mathews will take the part of “Buttons,” in the same piece. WE REGRaT to see, by the subjoined announce- ment iu the Washington News of Saturday, that the impaired health of the editor and proprietor of that long-established paper, has compelled its discontinuance. Mr Thompson says, in taking leave of his pa- trons > “We announce to-day the discontinuance of this journal, on account of impaired health, aud the destre we feel to devote ourselves exclusive- ly to official duties of anether kind under a re- cent appointment. Ia making the present an- nouncement, we tender our heartfelt acknow!- edgments to those friends and subscribers who have sustained us by their promptness and punc- tuality for several years past, and up to the pres- eattime. To thoxe who are still indebted to us we make our final appeal, that they will pay at our Office, No. 492 Ninth street, the amount justly due us for advertising, subscriptions, &c. It is our intention to wind up our pecuniary affairs in a satisfactory manner to all who have claims against us on account of this paper, and also to make a return of moneys paid in advance beyond the present time. And it will not be our fault, but the fault of those indebted to us, if we do not, in a reasonable time, satisfy every just claimant. In the meantime. we creve the indulgence and forbearance of the parties above referred to.”’ Pires —Last night an old unoccupied frame dwetling, on Third street near Maryland avenue, was fired by some person unknown. It was occupied by Mr. Pinkerton, and the fami- ly had barely time to escape. The fire was com- tmunicated through a knot or auger hole in the beards, and was discovered by a neighbor, who attempted to extingnish it with buckets of water, bat the fire had made its way between the wea- ther boards and plastering to the roof, which fell before anything could be saved, and the iomales barely escaped with their lives. By consent of General Henderson the Marine Band will be in attendance to lend the charm of music to that of oratory. To-night the citizens of Georgetown will enjoy the opportunity of hearing Mr. Everett, who lee- tures ia that city for the same noble benefit. Tus Memaens of the Columbia Fire Company are completing tueir arrangements for the erec- tion of a suitable monument in memory of the lamented Grenup. The company has resolved to remove the remains of Grenup's mother from the Baltimore Cemetery and place them by the side of those of ber son in the Congressional Bu- rial Ground. A pleasantly sitaated lot has been purchased there by them for this purpose, and in a short time this object will be earried out. Tue ™monument is now being made, and when com- pleted will be a masterly piece of art. It i esti- Tuated that the whole cost of the work will be upwards of 34,000. ‘Tue Smait-Pox casx.—The facts in relation to @ case of small pox having been misstated in some of the papers, we are requested to give the pa’. ticulars. it seems that a steward of a vessel was taken sick and was left ai a sailor boarding-house at Alexandria. It being ascertained that {t was a case of small pox, the persons having him in cbarge caused him to be brought to thi« city and placed at the door of the Infirmary. He was re- faved admission at the Infirmary, and was taken to the City Hall steps, and a message was sent to the Commissioner of Health: and therevpon the sufferer was provided for by the city authorities, and placed where he would be cared for without danger to the public. Peax Famity Bett Rincers —This troupe open to-night at Odd Fellows’ Hall. The pro- gramme now before us isa varied and promising one indeed, including a dozen or more different pieces, voral and instrumental. Tux Extension.—We perceive that our so- Proverbiaily enterprising fellow-citizens, the Brothers Willard, have already broken ground in the construction of the proposed extension of thetr present mammoth Hotel, on Pennsylvacia avenue and Fourteenth street. They are evi- dently determined to push the work through this season. When completed upon the pian we explalued some weeks ago, the whole house will forin one of the most extensive and well arranged series of buildings for hotel purposes in exist- euce in the United States Our active friends of the Metropolitan Lite- Fary Association, who have ventilated most of the prominent topics of the day very thoroughly in their discussious, now mean to dish up another entertainment for their friends and admirers—the public. Sunday School yester- day morning, viz: the presentation of a hand- some silver cup to Mr. James A. White by the pupils of the school. The very deserving me- mento bears the following inscription, ‘ Pre- sented to J. A. White, by the scholars of the M. E. Sabbath School,” and is intended as a reward for bis valuable services in teaching them in the art of singing. The cup was presented by Mr. E. Brown on behalf of the school, accompanied bv a few pertinent remarks, and received by Mr. White in quite a handsome and touching man- ner. Our young friend, Mr. White, leaves for Kansas the first of April, where, we learn, he in- tends locating. We have been requested by some of the official members of the Dambarton street Methodist church to warn those persons who are in the habit of annoying the minister and congregation by their disorderly conduct in the church during Sabbeth morning and evening worship against another repetition of it. They have all been carefully watched and are well known, and no- thing but a desire on the part of the official body to avoid, if possible, any measures that might tend to wound the feelings of the friends and relatives of the offenders, has prevented them from openly ex, ng ee whole of them. They the offenders) somes, owever, construed the fi Deatunce of the official members of the chu into a sort of license for their very disreputable conduct, and carried it to a point which forbearance ceases to be a virtue. We have. therefore, been requested to notify all such that if their very disrepatable conduct ix repeated, they must expect to be turned over to the officers of the law to be dealt with according tothe de- merit of their conduct, without regard to their claims to respectability or the feelings of friends.
