+ LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. MARKRITER’s.—Day by day we note first-class improvements springing up, Aladdin’s-palace- like, on Seventh street, all of which point signifi cantly to the fact that at nodistant period that thriving street will dis: precedence with the Avenue as a business ¢ bfare. The most recent and striking of these improvements is that of our friend Markriter, whose business bas been pore 2 increasing under bis prudent manage- ment that he bas been compelted to “enlarge his borders” and move into more capacious quarters. His new place is No. 436 Seventh street, ‘*Wash- ington Piace,’’ which he bas fitted up to suit his own artistic tastes, and the result is one of the most perfect establishments in his line of business ‘we have ever entered. Uundonbtedt fine painter was lost to the world when Markriter went into the upholstery and paper-hanging business; for none but an artist could have ar- ranged colors and tints in such harmonious pro- portions as those on the walls of his rooms. he ceiling in ular is a chef d°ceurre, and is Tichly worth inspection by those cur ous to see how ‘far the decorative art can be carried, in the way of rich effect, without hapega in the slightest degree upon the guady, or violating the severest standard of good taste. Some exceed- ingly beautiful specimens of panel work (imita tion woods) to be seen here, are also of his exe- ‘cution, and the walis are hung with choice pic- tures of his selection. Among these are some Temarkable illustrations of the perfection to which printing in oil has been Brought. The German oil ion of the Virgin and Child, after Murillo, for instance, will defy the closest inspec- tion te distinguish it froma fine ofl painting. By this wonderful process, pictures in every respect equal to the best ofl_ paintings are furnished at a mere fraction of the cost of the latter, and persons of moderate means are thus enabled to adorn their dwellings with choice works of art at a tri- fling expense. We invite attention to Markriter’s collection, and also cordially commend bim to our readers who may have occasion tor anything in hts line of business, as a prompt, reliable, courteous dealer, and whose taste may be im- plicitly trusted where the purchaser is in doubt. iis new establishment is a few doors above his old place of business. Bow.ixe Satooxs.— On Saturday, the 6th Instant, a communication appeared in the Star's local columns, making sundry allegations against the manner in which a bowling saloon said to be located in the Second Ward, is conducted, accu- sing the proprietors of permitting minors to play on their bata inp encouraging them to drink and bet and remain ont until unseasonable hours Subsequently, we have been assured by more than one of the most respectable citizens of the ward that the representations cf the writer of the communication in question are sweepingly false, and were probably the result of some private spite on his part. We have endervored, in vain, tw induce him to disclose his incognito; his as- sault having got into our columns by mistake. So far. he refuses to stand forth and essay to sub. stantiate bis staiements—proof positive, in our Judgment, that tbe suspicions concerning the in- tegrity of bis profexsed labors for the public good are correct. We bave only to add, that having devoted some time to the due investigation of all the facts in- volved, we have come to the conclusion that there is no bewling saloon in Washington City that does less injury to public morals—of old and youn;—than the only one that turns out to be kept in the Second Ward. We will give any one an oyster supper for a daguerreotype of the per- son who wrote us that missive signed “A Sub- ‘Seriber."’ Cximinat Court.—Trral of Benjamin Ogie, Sor the murder of John Webb.—When our re- port closed yesterday, the Acting District Attor- + Bey was making the closing argument. The case ea to the jury at ten minutes past one k. » The jury were unable to dgree upon a verdict in consequence of not baving understood the ex- planations of the court in answer to the instruc- fions prayed by the counsel. They accordingly came into court and his honor, in anawer totheir Tequest, a to them the suvstance of his re- warks, and explained them fully to the compre- hension of the jury, who thereupon retired avain to their reom. The Court remained in session to near five o'clock, in waiting for the verdict, but on learn- ing that there was no present expectation that the jury could agree, it adjourned to 10 o'clock this morning. e To-day, Col. James I. Randolph was present- ed to the court by Jobn A. Linton, Esq., and was duly admitted to practice at the Criminal Court of the District of Columbia. Up to 12 o’clock m., the jury in the case of Ogle not been able to agree upon a verdict. Crorser’s Cuoice.—Bill Cropsey, a colored fellow, well known in our Police annals as one of the city’s particularly hard cases, stole a sack of buckwheat from a grocery store on 9th street, — the market, on Wednesday night, and on Thursday night was caught by the proprietor and taken into the store, where Cropsey’s case ‘was tried by a few — gf ane and he was found indubitably E ity. he proprietor then addressed the criminal nearly as follows: “Now, Cropsey, you stole my buckwheat, and I will give you a choice of penalties, to take a good beating or go to jail for trial at court.” Bill tried to renew the plea of ‘not guilty’? but the judge declined to commence the case ab snitio, and Cropsey declared finally in favor of oe bam punishment. Bill was then turned oven barrel, aud the judge-executiouer, armed with a paddle, such as is used in flattening bags of flour, commenced operations. Bill, who, from sro gape omettae is rather a hardened sin- ner, xt it like a Spartan, until the seventh down stroke of the peddie, when be yelled for 2 stay of execution “Golly, mas’r,”’ he said, “that’s too hot, how meny more you gwine to guv me?” “Only seventegn”” was the answer. “Oh Lordy! seventeen more, then luff me up, I'd ratber try Judge Crawford; Ob Lordy, them blisters!” Cropsey was accommodated; an officer wax sent for. and bill was taken to jail to stand atrial at the March teri of tbe Criminal Court. Born Ronsery.—Mr. James Shreeves, who keeps a livery stabte on Seventh street in this city, had his pocket picked yesterday within the bar of the Criminal Court. While he was in con Mrs. Ogle, the wife of the prisoner d with murder, some adroit pick- naged to abstract his port monnaie about 850, and to make his escape If the thief had carried his investi- ratand, he would for in another undetected ations a little farther, we un five made = still larger b: —_ was a pocket-book containing the sum of This robbery, committed under the very drop- pings of the sanctury of law and justice, is most andacious Persons visitin; hereafter, will do well to pocket books A Sensation.—Quite a sensation was created yesterday by the appearance, on atree, in the vi- cimity of the Navy Department, of a placard, signed by an ex-Lieut. of the Navy, denouncing and pronouncing a Commander in the Service in the terms usual in such efforts to obtain ‘redress or satisfaction’ The cause alleged in the pa- per was something offensive contained in a pam- phlet said to have been written by the command- er We take it the affair grows out of occur- Tences in the course of proceedings before one of the late Naval Courts of Inquiry. the Criminal Coart ave an eyé on their Agagest —This morning, from information re- ceived, officers Carter: and Ross arrested two lads, William Bradley and Jos. Davis, who hail from New York, on the charge of stealing a purse and money from Mrs. Elizabeth Lowe, while walking on the sidewalk in seeapeny with her friends “tre, Lowe identified both, as soon as sbe saw them. She appears in her farewell representation in her impersonation of Camille, which we apprebend is the most popularly at- tractive of hercharacters. Next week the charm- ing Miss Morant Tas Maire! TEMPERANCE ALLEY.—This isa misnomer, if we may judge by the occurrences which have transpired there lately. Hardly a night passes, but there is a quarrel and fight between drunken men and women. Last ni ht the auxiliary guards were constantly runnin; Sack and forth in that alley to prevent outbreaks. The proprietor has submitted it to nearly the whole Medical Faculty of the United States, and has received answers from about four thousand Physicians and Chemists, who endorse it over their signatures as a most desirable addition to the Ma- terin Medica. Persons who purchase should be careful to get the genvine article, as the whole country is flooded with counterfeits and imitations. Put up in quartand pint bottles, in cases of one dozen each, and for sale by‘all the respectable Drug- ists and Grocers in the United States. UDOLPHO WOLFE, Sole Importer and Manufacturer.
