Toe description of the was given, and thi< Wm and‘ c 'y were arrested ictoa; but no one identifying efthér as the on # Switmsomian Lecture.—The concluding lec- ture of the course by Dr. Wynne at the Smithso- nian took place last evening. This was devoted almost exclusively to literary pursuits, and the longevity of the different classes engaged in them. The lecturer said that one great reason for the unhealthiness of literary pursuits is the habit of those engaged in them to eccey. one Position for too long a time, and thix position, one in which the muscles are relaxed, the chest compressed, and the head bent forward and downward. Under such circumstances breath- ing is dittieult, and great relief is fiequently ex- perienced from a prolonged respiiation. Ano- ther detriment to health arises from the babit of confining the mind for too long a period to one subject. The faculties are thus overtasked, and the consequence is that the physical system is impaired. It ts also frequently the case, the lecturer remarked, that the habits of litera men are in other respects eriatic. They en; with great zext in festivities, and many of them are intemperate Asa remedy for all those evils, the leeturer re- commended tempera ce, ‘egular habits, and fre- quent relaxation from labor Relaxation, he said. was imperative for the preie vation of health and life, with every human being ; and he gave as a reason why some classes of merchants re- tain vigorous health until a late pericd of life, and are still so successfal in business that their habits of temperance and oft-repeated recreation of mind and body. prevents the rapid exhaustion of their vitality, and preserves both their mental and physical systems from debilitation. Thus, while health of body is retained, the mind is kept in a condition at all times competent for the ryote ts of whatever duties may devolve upon it He did not, however, desire to be understood as saying that a Life of leisure was promotive of lon- gevity; for, from a comparison of the average length of life among the privileged classes of England and the general miasses of the English people, the difference was by several years in fa- vor of the former. He also took occasion to say that at different periods tn the history of England there was known to bea remarkable differencain the average longevity of the nobility and privi- leged classes. He next alluded to the fact that among the sev- eral classes of those engaged in literary pursuits there in a great diff-rence iu the averaze length of life. Ina tabular statement prepared by Mr. Madden these differences are classitic d as follows: Natural Philosopbers. Moral Philosopbers.. Painters and Sculptors Law Authors.. Medical Authors, Authors on general subjects. Philologists ....... Musical Composers... ... + Novelists and miscellaneous writers. Dramatists. Poets ory This table was made up b: x ‘imi- nately twenty of each class, whose merits in their several branches were generally acknowledged, no attention being paid to their advantages of habits, modes of Sife, or to locality. The lecturer next proceeded fo particularize the habits of several well known authors. among whom were Byron, Burns, Bacon, Cowper Jamieson, Scott, and Leibritz; and conclud with some generg! rema-ks relative to what care should be used by students and literary men to guard against too great excitability of the nerves This series of lectures would constitute a valu- able book, and we cannot omit expressing the hope that the author will publish them at anearly day. They comprise very many important facts, which it would be well were they more generully understood . — Wasuixeton Tuxarre.— Camille” is all the talk to-day. It displaces, as a topic, the New Code, Lecompton, and the Wolcott case. Every- body inquires of everybody “Did you see Ca- inille?** ‘*Wohat do you think of Miss Heron ?"” And everybedy is forced to admit—even they who protest azainst certain mannerisms of Miss Heron, and suggest Cherry Pectoral axa mollifier of Camille’ eking and unpleasantly natural b,—that she is an actress of singular power. Our readers, or ms 4 of them, will remember Miss Heron only as the fragile, infantile, sweet- faced young actress, who some years ago was so graceful and pleasing upon the boa-as of the old National Theatre. Since then, she has developed into full womanhocd, and comes before us now with round -d proportions, ang the deep thrilling voice and the eel) sweep of the tragedy queen. Asan intellectual performance her adaptation of +: Camille’? will notcompare with that brought out here by the Laura Keene company; but it is but fair to admit that it ia twice as truthfal to nature asthe latter. The character of Camille as portrayed by Miss Heron last night, exercised an interest almost painfully intense upon every person—and the house was crowded—in the theatre. An actress who can do this has powera of a high order. A single performance, how- ever, does not justify us in defining her precise histrionic status, and this we d-fer until after sering her in other parts which we a omised in the tragedies of +‘ Medea’ and ~ Phaedra.’ now in rehearsal. - Camilie’’ will be repeated again to-night for the benefit of the many who could not obtain sitting of even standing room last night Faienpsmp Lopcs Levan —There was a fine attendance, both nymerically, and in good looks, atthe Friendsbip Lodge Festival, last night.
