rhs LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. SeiTHsoxtan Lecrenes.—Dr. Wynne’s third lecture on the -Ettect of Occupation on Health,” was delivered on last W. evening at the Smithsonian Instifate, to 4 lar; audience, con- sidering the disagreeableness of the weather. He commenced by calling attention to the remark able similarity between the ‘Mortality Returns ? of Massachusetts and those for €ngland and weer These fatter show about the same aver- age bength of life for persons engaged in'the se - oat descriptious of occupation eras. Thiscir cumstance not only proves the yeneral accuracy of both statements. but fully establishes the theory that the difference ix attributable to the avocations pursued Leaving the above topic, the lecturer went on to speak of severat branches of industry yener- ally believed to be anhealthy. First, amony these, he noticed workers in copper. The dis- eases to which this class of mechanics Ject are said to be more frequently attribe chemical preparations employed in the facture of articles com copper of brass than to the metal itself This, the lecturer thought, might probably be the case, as it seems to be true that thoxe employed in certain depart- ments of this kind of maoufacture are ofvener at- tacked with diseases than those engaged in other departments. For instance, those who place the explosive compound in the percussion caps and the workmen in the rooms where sawdust jis used are most liable to a peculiar species of colic. It was formerly sapposed that powdered char- coal, a substance mach used by brass founders, ‘was the most prolific agent in neers nen ey incident to their business bere it was em- pl the w rkmen were said to be liable to asthma, caterrh, and lung compiaints. In F.ance, the commissioners appointed to investiate the subject reported to this effect, and its use was accordingly abandoned Among the brass work- ers in this country. the lecturer said, this asser- tion was not sustained. On the contrary, those employed in the departments where powdered charcoal is used, are a+ healthy genetally as in other departments of the business, and the lec- turer appeared to believe that the true cause of the diseases ix not yet discovered, althongh that it arises from the combiration of chemicals with copper, he did not seem to doubt. Phe manufacture of wall paper is another very unhealthy business, owing to the fact that the coloring used in many instances contains arsenic This is especially the cave with the green used for large figures, on the finer qualities of paper, and tn many establishments the use of arsenical green bas been to a great degree dispensed with, on this account, and a substitute in made of Prussian blue. The workmen in “‘satining™ the sarface of wall paper, also suffer greatly from the materials used They are frequently afflicted With great lassitude, and are subject to tamors So virulent is the poisonous qualities of some watl paper coloring, that persons are said to have become quite sick from remaining in a room Whose wal s were covered with puper coloed with these materials. NotwRbstanding the great balk of evidence in support of these theories, the lecturer said that there ae many who deny them Many workmen have declared that toey never suffered inconvenience on account of these dele- terious substances, though constantly employed where they are used. Thi-, the lecturer thought, was owing tothe d-ffereuce of snsceptibility in different systems to the action of poison. He next noticed the cases wherein mercurial Preparations are used by the workmen. All these Solas of business, comprising the manafac- turer of looking-glasses, fine gilding, fine b-ass works, such as the movements of watches, &c., are unbealthy, aud the inventive genius of me- chanics bas n calied into requisition to dis- cover some plan by which the dingers might be obviated. The manufacture of friction matches was likewise placed inthe category of unhealthy diseases, on account of the phosphorus used >> ‘Thé most palpable effect is necrosis of the jaw- | ad ne, which is early developed, and only cured Vy application of the knife Several other branches of industry were enu- vated, and the peculiar diseases to which ~ those engaged in them are subject were de- scribed Our space will not permit us to do jus- tice to discourses of such practical importance as is this entire series, and we close, therefole, by notifying our readers that Dr. W. will lec. ture again on this and next Wedne- day evening. Ix Tue Cirecit Corrt, on Friday, the case of McKean rs. Bluke was finally determined. The case grew out of a contract for the Congressional binding for the 3ist Congress in the year 1852 ‘The said contract was awa'dedto John H. Talbott, in whieh action way brought to re- cover the value of an elk used aca model alleged to have been killed by the defendant, returned a verdict in favor of the plaiutitY, and assexsed the d umages at $50. On Saturda , the Court bad up for considera- tion, in the mourning, the case of Jolin Purdy vs. Mary A.
