LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Crimtxar Covrt.—When our report closed yesterday, the Court was engaged upon the trial of Mary McFerson for killing one Nancy Buck- —— colored, on the 7th day of Septem- ber, 1857. The Acting District Attorney, Mr Maur x opened the case, and was followed vy Mr. Nene = defence; after which the prosecution cal be ee John H. Wise, sworn —Testified as to the freedom or the prisoner, and the two colored witnesses for the prosecution. Polly Buckhannan, colored, sworn —Was not Present when the beating took place; on Monday, about 9 o'clock, a. m., ‘prisoner came into wit- nesses house; witness spoke to her, and she ask- ed witness ifshe had got a warrant for her; wit- hess answered, no; she then went to the kitchen and got a piece of wooden sleeper that had been under the floor, and tried it azainst the wall,and it broke; she then laid it down and took a piece of board, which she broke over the bead of de- ceased; she then took upa chair: the blow with the board mashed the bone in; she then split the ebair in pieces over Nancy's head; the seat of th- chair was split in two with the force of the blow 7 it was a common chair with a wooden seat; d-- ceased, who was sitting at the time of receiviag the blow, now fell to the tleor; the bone vas mashed into the brains, and the skull was sy lit o across her hea ancy asked prisoner what she was going to beat her for? and the prisoner replied that she had not said what she was going to do; this was when the prisoner first eame in; she said to Nancy that she should not go out til, she (the prisoner) said xo; witness held on to the Prisoner while she was beating Nancy, until she — the witness away. and then witness hal- oed; witness ran out of the house and called for help; the prisoner remained in witnesses y threats against the deceased; the deceased was visited by a Doctor, and lingered for some time afterward, when she died—say three weeks after the beating; the deceased was struck repeatedly with the chair, and the prisoner was still beating her when witness ran out of the house to call for belp; when the prisoner was beating the deceas- ed, she exclaimed that ‘what she intended to do, she would do.”’ Cress-cramined —When the prisoner first came into the house she seemed very quiet; witness only asked her to sit down; the deceased only asked her if she wax come to beat ber * ain. No other conversation took place; Jobu Lomax Was sitting there. but when he saw her so violent be went out for an officer; the deceased had been sick previous to the beating but was at that time much better; she had bad no physician while sick; the deceased was about twenty-five years old, and had never been married; she never was very healthy; sbe had symptoms of fever; the piece of board first used was of oak wood, sev- eral inches in width, and broken in two by the blow; after the beating, the deceased w s Placed in bed, and never got up again Mary J. Howard, sworn.—Never saw the ris- oner before the day of the occurrence; was there when the officer came in; she had just thrown the pieces of chair down on the floor, and stoed in the middle of the room swearing; she said then that she had intended to kill the deceased. and all that she regretted was that she had no knife with ber; witness get a basin of water and washed the blood off the head of the deceayed; the doctor was seut for and he gave orders as to her treatment, her head bled ver cut all over; the top part was all mashed in; the chair was cracked apart; Dr. Willett attended the deceased; the prisoner acted very coolly all the while witness saw her; the déceased suffered @ great deal while she lived, and was beaten on ber side and arms, and very badly bruised; she ‘was a small acd delicate woman Cross-eramined —T he chair was second band, but was a good one, and sound before the Prisoner used it; it was lying in the floor when witness went in; witness lives within one door of the house where the beating took place Officer James Wollard sworn.—Happened to be im the neighborhood at the time of the oceur- rence, and drove over there; when witnesx got there Mary McFerson had just come out of the Wr; the deceased was lying there bloody; the Prisoner boasted of what she had done, and said she had not given the deceased as much as she had intended; saw a broken chair; did not notice it particularly; stopped there but a few mom nts, but took the prisoner away, and she admitted that whe bad done what ov: rred; she was not drunk, and seemed to be in full possession of her faculties. Cross-eramined —Saw the chair, but did not notice whether it was split er not; the prisoner did not appeay like she had been drinking RB. Hughes sworn — Witness and Gjficer Wollard were riding along the street in a buggy, and seeing a crowd went In; aw a colored we. man lying at one side of the room bleeding very mach, aud heard the prisoner, who bad walked im, say that she had done it; she admitted that the chair the wea she had used; chair broken in pie looked like a chair re- cently whol, but now broken and demolished; she appeared to be quite wrothy much, and was Cross-eramined —She was not drank; never knew her betore Dr. John E. Willett, sworn —Attended N: day Buckbannan; saw her the were inflicted; she had of wounds on the sealp, especially on ht sideof the head; she had no use of her rivht arin, which was badly bruised; she conid net be touched without sereaiminy with pain; there was a fracture of the skull on the right side of the craninm, and the hair was driven through against the br skull was not crushed, but a simple fract tended ber until she died; there was only one fracture; when witness first saw her she was sinking under the wounds: ted from its counee: probed the we ; calp slouzhed off, and she died; she died from the wounds, particularly from the sloughing off of the sealp; the state of her health may have intinenced th: effect; she had not as much physical vigor asa person in seed health; the wounds were the coutreling cause of her death; witness treated her between three and four weeks before she dird The examiaction was arrested here, and the Court adjourned To day, the Court met at the usnal hour, and the trial of Mary McFerson for the murder of Nancy Buckhannan was resumed. Dr. John E. Willett was catled for erossexam- ination, and testified te being called in to xee the deceased, a day or two after the wounds had been tuflicted; knew it must have been thirty-six hours afterward trom the cond ‘tion of the wounds, the wounds were rageed, and w! Witness was called in, it was too late to close them fogether; had witness been called t first it would have been possible, perhaps. toclose them the wounds made no progress toward healing from first to last, and bealthy action could not be produced; ‘he whole sealp was dead, and in pressing it er flowed from the wounds on ali sides. No of the wounds was necessarily mortal if in- flicted on a heman head The deceased stated to witness that she was pregnant; that she bad felt the child moving in the womb, until a few days prior to her death, when it ceased to move This fact she did not communicate to witness until a few days previous to her death. G. 8. and P. G. M.’s, the presiding officers and a delega- tion of five or six fromeach of the subordinate lodges of the District were invited The meet- ing organized in Covenant Lodge room on Con- gress street, about 150 being present, from whence they marched in procession to Porrest Hall, where a sumptuous repast had been spread. After an address of welcome by the chairman ef the invi- tation committee, (Jno. T. Bangs, Esq.,) there Was @ general set-to, and amid a elashing of knives and forks they discussed the superb feast spread before them, of which there was an abun- dance, (meats, towl and fish,) showing that the Georgetowners are au fait in providing both quality and erro for their friends—the ab- sence of alcoholic stimulants being a noticeable feature, (coffee being provided in its stead,) for which they deserve credit. After the inner man had been satisiied, speech, song and sentiment ruled the hour—among the speakers being P. G. S. Wm. W. Moore, G. R's Fréd. D. Stuart and Jobn W. Hodgson, P.G. Wm. 8. Roberts, and others, and singing by brothers Newman, Kelly, Stuart, Godey. and others. Atan early honr the company separated, ex- pressing a unanimous opinion as to the fraternal feeling of the Covenanters of No. 13. ‘The agent of Vanderwerken’s line, with his ac- enstomed spell bad harnessed up extra teams to convey the Washingtonians their homes, for which many thanks were expressed. Visit to the President.—The “ Old Folks” vis- ited the White House this morning to pay their respects to President Buchanan, and were very kindly received by him. In answer to their pro- posal tbat he should name some music tote sung by them, the President designated “Sweet Home.”’ which was rendered with fine effect by the class, and in a manner to elicit a marked ex- pression of gratitication from Mr. Buchanan. ARREST oF LUKE ANDERSON —-Yesterday, Luke Anderson, a plasterer, who fur some time past has been residing in the 7th ward of this city, Was arrested as a fugitive from justice, on charge of committing a murder in rginia, on the 24th December last. He was sent to jail fora further hearing before Justice Denn, at 4 o'clock to-day. The information was seat to the Mar- sual’s officers in this city and the prisoner was ariested by county consiable Allen. This morning, William Rollins, a boatman, was arrested as a party concerned with Luke An- derson. The murder referred to is that of a maa named Grittith, who lived near the head of Aquia Creek. Rollins is a young man, well known in Washington; and bis arrest, on a charge of this nature, has caused considerable, surprise among his acquaintances. . Tue Wasnixctos Monument —A rumor is current that the ever-to-be-remembered and never- to-be-forgotten Board of Directors of the above institution have had another secret meeting, and have sent out another corps of collectors, with a view to having the monument finished by the end of the next working season. Jt is binted that in view of the prevailing hard times and the difficulty experienced by the solicitors in realizing the needful, the Board have vied to finish out the monument with brick and mortar, witha rhe ae cast finish to hide the little dis- similarity between the marble surface and the brick. Hurrah! A monumentat last. Herma- phrodite to be sure, but still a monument. LaRcesy AND ARREST.—Thos. C. O’Shaugh- nessy was arrested, yesterday, by Mr. W. M. Cripps for stealing rope and tobacco from his grocery store. While carrying bim toa magis- trate O'Shaughnessy drew a revolver and pre- sented itat Mr. Cripps’ head, with a view to free himsef, but did not succeed.” He was disarmed and sent to jail by Justice Donn Tur Metopron.—tandis’ Opera Troupe still keep up their many attractions. Among the nov- elties last evening was a very life-like burlesque on the Old Folks’ Concert, which was received with roars of laughter. It will be performed this evening, with the asual variety of minstrel- sy. Also, the Simon Pure essence of old Virui- nia, by Weston Por Ferrer Hranixe.— This mor ning Jas, Barnes was arrested on a charge of stealing a ra- ze and with disorderly conduct at Miller's bair dressing Saloon; and Benjamin Purcell, for car- rying a dangerous weapon and disordetly con- duet. Fos- ter against Edward A Pollard, for threats of personal violence, was called up for trial before Justice Murphy yesterday at 44 o'clock, P.
