XI. 1g WASHINGTON, D. C., FRIDAY, JANUARY 22, 1858. Star. NO. 1,562. A HUSBAND CAUGHT. We published a few days ago the letter of a wife addressed to a young lady who had offered @ correspondence with her husband. A lady in St. Louis thus writes to the St. Louis Republi- can: Mr. Enrtor: I was reading the “ spicy cor- respondence”™ in your paper, yesterday, and it reminded me of something that happened to a married man some three years since, Now, I never wrote anything for the papers in all my life, (we know better,) so I will state the facts as I know them to occur, and you can put them in ship-shape. The gentleman's wife had good reason to suspect him of being partial to ladies in general, and to other men’s wives in partic- ular, so she laid a trap to eatch him. She wrote him a letter in a disguised hand, tellin him thatyshe had long loved him in secret, and #he had often been tempted to write to him, but that the fear of her husband and his wife had prevented her domestic relations, that she could no longer resist. She hoped he would not think her a bold, bad woman, for addressing him first and soliciting an interview. If he only knew how long and how ardently she had loved him, he would pity if he could not love her—and a deal more in the same strain—concluding yy requesting him to meet heron a certain bridge at 8 o'clock at night, where she would Le isguised as a negress. She signed herzelf Mary. The evening came, and with it came the gen- tleman home at an early hour, and in die bast of humors. He split wood, which he had never been known to do before, made himself very useful, kissed his wife several times (something unusual), My 2 could not wait for supper, as he had urgent business down town. As soon as he left, his wife disguised herself and went to the place appointed and behold! there he sat, perched upon the bridge, his um- brella over him, (for it was rainy and dark.) She passed by, and he caught hold of her, and asked if it was Mary. She told him yes, when he clasped herin his arms, gave her a sweet kiss, and then put his hand up to her head to see if it might be a negress—the idea having struck him that possibly he was hoaxed. Find- ing the head all right, he insisted on knowin, who she was. After due hesitation, she told him the name of a beautiful married lady. ~- Is it possible that you are Mr. —’s wife ?”’ “ It is even so,”’ she replied, and hid her head in his bosom and pretended to ery bitterly, whereupon he soothed her, kissing a great maany times, and telling her she was the sweet- est little woman he had ever kissed, and if he had only as sweet a wife he would be perfectly happy. In the meantime they had “ ad- journed”’ to one side of the road, and be had sat down on a very sharp stump, taking Mary in bis lap; and you may be sure she did not spare him any. Finally, Mary concluded she must go home. and insisted on his meeting her on Monday, if he knew any good place Oh, yes, he knew the best kind of a place, and went on to tell her all about it; which was just what she wanted to know. Then he in- sisted on her going with him to his office. On their arrival he asked her for her shawl to hang up at the window. She handed it to him, politely bowing and telling him she would cer tainly meet him on Monday. If you cannot imagine how meanly he looked, I cannot tell you. I only know he complained a good deal about that—lish stump being so sharp. Be so kind as not to let any one see this. A certain person will know who wrote it if he eees the handwriting. Fanyy A. WAKING UP THE WRONG PASSENGER. A few days ago a person entered a store, not a hundred miles from the old State House, and inguired eagerly for the proprietor. “There he is,’ said the salesman. pointing to a shrewd but quiet-looking individual, who was warming himself over the stove. ~‘ You are Mr.”’ (we will call it Jones) said the visitor. -Yes, sir.’ “I learn that you suspended last week,”’ re- joined the anx' inquirer. ‘ Indeed,’’ said the proprietor. ‘Yes, and I must inform you that I am come from the mercantile agency of So-and-:o to inquire about your assets and lia- bilities.”’ “* You don’t say so, ’ returned the proprietor, with a little Paces ae his eyes and a slight twitching of his mouth, but otherwise with an unchanged countenance. ~ Yes. I have,” said the visitor. -‘ We are obliged to be very particular in our inquiries and I was sent expressly te ascertain the exect condition of your affairs. How much are your liabilities’”’ ~ Well,” replied Mr. Jones, stroking his up- per lip, in the deepest thought, as though en- gaged in guessir g a conundrum, “ Well, take them altogether, as I haven't paid all my Jan- uary bills oul say that my total liabilities might—possibly—be—five—hundred dollars'”’ “Five hundred, five hundred.’* muttered the astonished visitor, taking out his paper and pencil, and surveying the store filled with valuable goods. ™ Now, I say, Mr. Jones, is not that setting it rather low” “By no means,” said Jones, “it is very high; I don’t think I owe above three hundred, but I thought I'd call it five, to make it seem more respectable.” “Oh, and whatin goodness name may be Jour assets?’ “Well, without meddling with my real es- tate, or this stock of goods, I should say my ready means were about four thousand dol- lars The anxious inquirer’s eyes stuck out con- siderably, and his briskness of manner forsvok him, as he murmured, Then you haven't euspended?"’ No!’ The clerks could stand it no longer, and the very walls shook with their merriment. Apol- ies were made and received. but they were of no use. The visitor could'nt keep up, and when last seen, he was standing down Wash- ington street, under a press of sail, hut not seeming to care what sort of a coat he had on. —Boston Post. Wi ox Dyixa.—There is something un- natural in the painful and extravagant sym- athy with which the dying are surrounded. t is not such a gloomy thing to die. The world has pleasant places, and I would hear in my last hour the voice, and the birds, and the ehanee music I may have loved, but better music and voices of more ravishin, sweetness, and far pleasanter places are to be found in Heaven, and I cannot feel that it is well or natural to oppress the dying with the distress- ing wretehedness of common sorrow. I would let go cheerfully from the world. I would bave my friends comfort me, and smile on me, and feeling willing that I should be released from sorrow, and perplexity. and disease, and go up—now that my race was finished joyfully to my reward.
