LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Ustrep Stares AoricunturaL Sociery.— When our report closed yesterday, Mr. Olcott, of New York, who was addressing the Society on the subject of the acceptance of the report of the Committee on the “Surgho Sacre,’ closed his Temarks by advocating its acceptance and the feasibility of cultivation, profitably, the Chinese sugar cane Dr rs of Massachusetts, replied that he did not wish the Society to express an opinion this year that they would have tocontradict next year. He wished to stand uncommitted, and not have the report go out unless it embodied a state- ment of all the facts elicited at the present meet- ing. “Sic Harlan moved to amend the motion to re- commit by recommitting the report to the com- mittee with instructions to combine and curtail any additional facts that may be elicited during the present session. Mr Loring agreed to this motion as being sub- Stantially what he wished to bring out. Mr. Byington wished to hear the report read again, and it was accordingly read by the Chair, and when concluded, Mr. Loring wished to know if the Society was willing to have that report go out as a complete result of the experiment with this plant? The report stated that the seed would ripen, when planted in mer by September. Not @ pint of bad been ripened in the entire State of Massachusetts last r, and if any per- son in that State wished for further experiments, they would have to send off for the seed to plant. It would not come to maturity in the State of Massachusetts. The report stated that that this plant could be raised as easily and successfully as Indian corn. Would ar y one undertake to certify to that onaone year's trial? He could not from his experience with it. The report said that it farnished a wholesome and nutritious food for horses, sheep, cattle and swine. Was that so? Had not gentlemen stated in this meet- ing that quite the reverse was the case? He was not willing, for one, to commit himself to an opinion unsustained by facts. If the gentlemen of the committee would draw up a report based upon all (he facts now elicited, he would vote for if to be accepted and given to the public. After much discussion npon this point, in which several members participated at some length, the re-commitment wax lost. Gov. Brown. of Mass., moved the previous question, which was taken and the report was accepted. Mr. Alcott, of N.Y , here arose and stated that the Lonr was late, and that it was a good time to dv an act of justice to a gentleman who bad come into this meeting to demand it. Mr. Leonard Wray had came to the United States last spring to introduce a variety of sugar cane which he had introduced into Europe from Cuftraria, Afri- ea. He bad paid the sam of 500 for a patent for making sugar from ourghe and imphee. He had sta’ here nearly a whole year, at great expense and neglect of business. Of this imphee he had cultivated some sixteen varieties of greater or lexs saccharine richness. The United States Patent Office, or rather one of its clerks, had issued a Private circular, asking that no person should purchase this patent till they knew the action of this society on the subject of this plant. In jus- tice to Mr. Wray, who was present, he would call upon the Chair to invite Sim to address the society on this subject Mr_D. J. Brown, of D. C., here or to offer a resolution covering the matter. The rexo- lution referred the subject of the imphee cane to @ committee, with instructions to examine and report upow the comparative merits of the sorgho sucre and the imphee ; carried. Mr. Wray bere arose aud addressed the Society He protested against the construction which that Tesviution placed upon the imphee. It acknowl- edged the superiority of the surgho, which was not the case. Gov. Hammond, of South Caro- lina, had certified publicly that after a cultiva- tion of overone hundred acres during the past year, he found the implce, or some varieties of t, were superior to the sorgno. Mr. Wray had proceeded this far, when— Mr. Kimmel, of Md , suggested that the sub- Sect was of too much importance to be taken up at this time, the hour being late, and if agreeable to Mr. Wray, be would move that its farther consideration be postponed until to-morrow morning, at 9 o'clock. This proposition was agreed to, and it was so referred Hon. H. F. He acknowledged the high favor shown to him in electing t to preside over them as a distinguished honor, and a compli- Ment tv the South Col. Autbony Kimmel, of Maryland, then asked leave to address the chair on a subject to which the attention of the Society had been called yes- terday, when he was not present, and to which he bad some remarks to make. The Chair announced the following commu- sation from Prof. Bache, of the Coast Survey fice : President, U.S. Coast Server Orricg, Jan. 14, 1858. Dear Sir—Will Ae be so kind as to invits the members of the U.S. A.S. to visit the office of the Coast Survey at any time during their meet- ing here which may be agreeable to them. Very Ferpectiohy, yours, A. D. Bacus, Superintendent. Hon. Marsuan P. Winper, Pres. U. 8. AS. On motion of BB. French, the communication was ordered to be eutered on the minutes and the invitation was accepted. The meeting here went into the transaction of some minor business, at the conclusion of which the order of the day was taken up, viz: the con- sideration of the subject of the culture and tre: ment of the Sorgho and Imphee sugar plant, as described by Leonard Wray, Esq. Mr. Wray thanked the Convention for appoint- ing Py: atime for him to lay before the So- ciety his views and experience {n the culture of the sugar plant He had come bere a stranger, and felt the kinduess and courtesy with which he had been received. He bad introduced the Imphee into all parts of the world. He Was, in the early part of his life, a sugar planter in the West Indies, the East Indiex and Cafraria. In Cafraria be bad discovered the Imphee sugar cane. He had experimented with it in various ways, and found that this plant contained less tibrous matter than that of any other species or sugar cane. He found, on trying as to the relative pro- portion of juice to be obtained from it that he could get 70 and sometimes 75 per cent. of juice from the plant, a much larger Proportion than from any other species of cane. Grown in rich bottom lands, it was not ible to make it avail- able in making cbrysta! ble sugar but, but on upland light soils it was as easy to make yood tas f-om the ordinary cane. (Here we were forced to close our report.] Tue INDIANS aT THE ARSENAL AND Navy Yarv.—The visiting Indians started from Maher's hotel at 10 o'clock this morning, on a visit, per invitation, to the Arsenal and Navy Yard. They were conveyed in four or five large omnibuses, a mede of traveling that seemed to suit them amazingly, and they went off in high lee, singing ian songs, and evineing their elizht in various ways. The Party included delegations from the Sioux, Pawnecs, Pettawot- tamies, Poucas and Winnebayoes. They were received at the Arsenal by Major Bell, witha detachment of men from the yaid. A numerous company of ladies and gentlemen, including Cabinet Ministers, members of the Diplomatic Corps, were present. ‘The visiting party and spectators proceeded to the lawn, where they Were treated to an exhibition of tar; et-firing. The Indians were delighted with the Tring, and whenever the target in the river was struck there was 4 general chorus of “Ughs'"* and other notes of admiration and surprise. They were then shown the artillery, and from thence conducted to the Armory, and the long line of gun racks seemed to have especial Pescitasion for the braves. Afterwards they were ranged in acircle in the oren air, and cach of the Chiefs was pre- Seuted with a yun by Gov. Floyd, Secretary of War, The * then proceeded on their visit to the Navy Yard. APPRECIATED TALENT AND S«iLL.—It is cer- tainly very gratifying for a gentleman of science, intelligence and experience to find that his merits as @ professor, no matter to what science he may have devoted his talents, are fully appreciated by a discerning public, and that his learning and long years of study Lave not been spent in vain. but that the community wherever his lot may be cast may be the fortunate recipients of well-di- vested puservation or practical knowledge, either in natural science, historical research, or the study of the human body, for the prevention or alleviation of disease. Weare prompted to these remarks after daily hearing of the immense success and public ap- preciation by our citizens of the renowned Doctor Schlosser, the scientific surgeon chiropodist, who, though a stranger in this part of the world a few months ago, is now as well known as thouzh he were one of the influential natives of the United States. We understand that the Doctor cannot receive any patients after this week, as important ewe sional appointments in the South compel him to leave this city.
