W hile I congratulate you upon the suscess of our association, | unite with you in deploring the ex- Istence of a commercial embarrassment unpa: eled in the history of our country. Here we have a visible demonstration of the importance of the feat cause of avricultare, in the fact that in the midst of thisdepression, when so many of the other industrial arts seek lucrative employment and find none, when the fortunes and bo) of of many of our fellow citizens are wrecked, and when the hearts of many more are failing them for the fear of trouble that may overtake them, where do we look for ultimate relief, for a power that can unfurl the sails of our late prosperous commerce, that can put in motion again our man- ufactures, our machinery, and freight the leng trains of cars which lately traversed our innumer able railroads, creatlug protitable employment for millions, pivil life and enterprise to ail classes of society? Where? There can be but one reply to this question For these results. we must look to the products of the soll. It was. said the speaker, highly important that the Government should protect the American farmer by wise legislation. He then went through a review of the past experi- ence of the Society in relation to farming tmple- ments; spoke of the last annual exhibition, and of future exibitions, saying that in the infancy of the Society it was deemed necessary to its es- tablishment and success that it should hoid an annual exbibition Last year, in this depart- it had performed double service, imposing officers a demand for an unusual amount of labor, responsibility and expense; they bad, however, promoted and extended the area of friendship, and a more general intercourse among cultivators in all parts of the Republic, and en- couraged the National Government by inte-views and meetings in this city. Allusion was made to deceased officers. the names of Thos. J. Rusk and GW. P. Custis, bearing a conspicuous part. Iu concluding, the eloquent speaker congratu- lated the Society upon the beneticial intinence of the Association and the results wd; the an- niversaries at the seat of Government and annual exhibits bad awakened an extended interest in the great cause they sought to advauce. They had aided in developing the vast naturil resour- ces of our country, in elevating the vocation of the farmer to its true dignity and importance. Let ux then, said he, take fresh couraze, redou- ble our efforts, and speed the car of improvement in its advancing course. Correspondence of the Star. Gronczrown, Jan. 13, 1Rs8 We have never fn our experience seen our river ‘wharves so completely stripped of s! as they are at the present time. This has a ten- dency to give rather a dull appearance to things and matters generally in this quarter. We have never seen so little grain of any kind coming in at this season of the year as there is at the present time. Most of our mills are in con- sequence of the scarcity of the article doing but little inthe way of making flour. Wheat, we learn, is in demand, and doubtless large quanti- ties could easily tind ready sale among our differ- ent milliners. We regret to see, from an advertisement in another column, that Miss Arny has determined to dispose of her confectionery establishment and retire from the business. This step, we learn incidentally, bas been caused by the in- tended departure of ber brother, who bas hereto- fore so successfully managed the vusiness for her, for Kansas. As this extablishment has al- ‘way’ enjoyed the best custom of our town, and a large po:tion from Washington, we consider it almost indispensable, and if suffered to go down its absence would be erro gen Mivees by the com- munity. We believe that no better opportunity could offer an individual who understands the business to make money than this, and we sin- cerely hope that Miss Arny may tind a worthy successor. és We are glad to be able to inform the numerous f. lends of our esteemed fellow-citizen Capt. Geo. F De LaRoche, is considered by ois physician and friends convalescent. The cet yaceae M C. Meigs and Argo, of the Messrs. Ritter’s line, have been bauled off for the season, and are to undergo a thorough overhauling and repair preparatory to the busi- ness of the next season. We have been requested to call the attention of the pump doctors to the one on Dumbarton street opposite the property of Capt. De LaRoche. It has been dry for some time. The friends of young Powers are actively en- gaged trying to secure for him a pardon from the President. We believe that the exercise of exec- utive clemency in this case would meet with the very general approbation of our citizens of all political parties There is but little doing in the flour market. The only sales making are the home trade, con- sequently of a limited character, beid at $1.50a 175 for standard and extra brands. In conse- quence of the scarcity and demand there is a bet- ter feeling th the wheat market, and prices have slightly advanced; selling at $1.05a8! 0S for red and $1 10al.15 for white.
