Appleby, on the night of the 20th of November, 1557. ‘This case was pending when this report closed. Wat tm Ixpians vip ar tng SMITHSONIAN On Monday morning, about twenty of the Indian chiefs and warriors now in the city visited the Smithsonian Institution, and were conducted through the various departments. where they tvineed their surprise and delight, after their wild fashion. In the picture gallery (Stanley’s Indian paintings,) they were particularly inter- ested by the representation of a war dance around two captives—a woman and child. They were much disappointed at not finding portraits of any of their own tribes in the gallery. In the apparatus room, a number of them were indog-d to join hands, aud a severe galvanic shock was given them. Some of them gave vcnt to the significant ‘* Ugh,” indicating their sur- Prise, and turned fiercely about to discover the person they supposed had struck them; others Tubbed their arms and elbows, and, from the en- eral talk in their own language, one would sup- pose they had entered upon a scientific discussion of the nature of the singular manifestation. Afterwards several of them took shocks singly, and it was curious to witness the grim determin- ation with which these stoics of the wilderness undertook to asxnme that air of impassiveness which tradition asserts they maintain when un- dergoing torture as captives. But it was no vo; they had to knuckle to science, and, as one ailer the other of the astonished braves was doubled up, tarebled upon his knees, and knocked into a ey by the powerful battery, be was saluted by most uproarious jeers and laughter by his fellows Some of the party mounted the high north tower of the Institute ; but when at the top onl one of them could be prevailed upon to approac the edge and look down the dizzy height—most of them squatting down as svon as they reached the summit. One of them was observed placing small pieces ef tobacco on the parapet. The interpreter ex- plained that this was intended as an olfering to the Great Spirit, as the Ludians believed that at this beight they were nearer the Deity than they ad ever been before, and accordingly improved the opportunity to pay their worship. On descending the Indians had a grand war dsnce with singing, in the lecture room, and shortly after concluded thix visit, most interest- ing to beth the Indians and the ‘pale faces?’ present Attention PoLice.—Mr. Editor: Allow me through the medinm of your widely-circulated, paper, tocall the attention of the police to the fact that a party of boys, from eight to eighteen years of age. are in (he habit of meeting about the un- occupied honse on the corner of Pennsylvania avenue and Four-and-a-half street. They may be seen about there at all times, aud prove a source of destraction of property and a great annoyance to the neighborhood. They pet a rendezvous of the house spoken of, breaking the glass and forcing the Tocks with impunity; and no fasten- zs can be put on the doors to withstand them Th operty is assessed at over fourteen thou- sand dollars; and, as it ix assessed with other Property, it is to be hoped that it will be protect- ed by the en tion authorities. Officer McHenry gave them a lecture, the rough eloquence of which was made impressive by the exhibition of a well-worn cowhide, and induced earnest promises of better behavior in future; after which they were dis- missed.
