LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Tus Riven.—At the long bridge the country people keep up the march of travel, bringing to the city the products of their corn and wheat fields and pig styes. The real old fashioned mule teams begin to arrive trom far-off counties with pork and -cheese. A curious sight it is. to see Uncle Toby astride of a high mountain of dead hogs, which are piled into a wa; which resembles more an fashioned tisht: stoop than anything else, to which is attached from six to ten raw-boned disconsolate mules, driving carefully over the bridge, his black face expi alternate grins of delight at the prospect of visit to the city, and deep jon that some accident will befal the draw of the and precipitate his poreine car into the m: iy tide below. Any one who hes Toby's face for a momeat can read as plain as priet A his little personal earni months are stowed awa’ wagon, and that the little cash which he expects to receive from his peck and a half of beans, his shoat, and dried peaches, will be invested ‘in a dollar a balf acrordeon for himself, and a blazing cotton handkerchief for Aunt Dolly, bis country wife ‘The river looks dark, muddy, and very wet. and a thick grave-yard fog spreads over its sur- face. About the wharves oysters abound. Some 2,000 are stowed away inthe pungas which and Riley's wharf, and the ers are plenty ‘There are no late arrivals of coal at the wharves. The Collyer brought up, on her 9 o'clock trip this morning, 100 bbls. of apples, which came over the Orange and Alexandria Railroad yester- day The Wasbington and Alexandria Railroad did not resume travel on Monday as was confidently expected, some little clearing on the track. which it was necessary to have done, being the cause. The cars will be ranning, however, ina day or two. hat all for the last twelve @ one corner of that At Alexandvia, business was dull, and no ar- rivals of vessels worth notin; The Great Southern Mail was transferred tothe tiver route on the Ist instant, and works most successfully, not a failure to make the regular connections has been experienced thus far, not- withstanding the heavy fogs which have pre- vailed during the past two weeks. The rajlroud track between Richmond and Predericksbury has been relaid, with beavy rail, to within a few miles of the latter city, and coat- ing the company some $150,000, and the rest of the route is to be relaid at a cost of some $150,000 more. ‘a : Some S900 tons of iron have arrived at Aquia Creek within a few days, for the railroad im- provements. The steamer Powhatan bas been put in com- plete repair, and will be brought to the Compa- ny’s wharf to-morrow; she will not, however, be put in service until the river becomes frozen. Crxevit Covrt.—In the case of A. E. L Keese. to show cause why he should not be dis- missed from bis office, was pending when our re- port closed yesterday, the Court decided that Keese should be suspended for the space of six meooths, for demanding a reward for the appre- hension of parties while knowing their wherea- bouts. The Court averred that when a reward was offered for the apprehension of fugitives from Justice, an otticer might with propriety receive such proposed reward as an incentive to dili- gence on bis part. The case in question was where the defendant bad found the fugitives from justice, and placed them in a position where he could lay his hands on them at any time; after which he went to the party interested in the ar- Test of the fugitives and said *‘what will you give for the arrest of said parties?” The reply fixes the amount; and, on the instant, the officer made reply that he had the prisoners. ‘The prin- cipal then refused to pay the reward. and a ma- gistrate’s decision compelled him subsequently to pay it to the officer. An appeal was taken, and the Court reversed the magistrate’s decision, and im d all the costs of Court upon the offi- cer he Court deemed it necessary to make an example of the officer in question, although, as before stated, a reward had been offered; but, at the same time, in consideration of his previous good character and energy in ferreting out crimi- nals, in many instances, they made the punish- ment as light as possible Tue Stacxtox Tracepy.—The body of Wil- liam Mullins, the unfortunate man who was shct at Staunton, Va., on the 11th inst., was on Mon- day evening, brought to the residence of his mother on Seventh street. ‘The agonizing cries of the bereaved mother and widow were affecting in the extreme. Mullins, it will be remembered, was found dead. on Saturday a my last, near the house of Dr. Daniel Downey, the Catholic priest in cha of the church at Staunton. An inquest was’held and the jury returned a verdict that the deceased was killed by a pistol or gunshot fired by Daniel Downey, who was forthwith committed to jail, together with four witnesses who were in the house at the time the affair took place. Downey confesses that he shot Mullins, but says the deed was committed in self defence. He Las a bruise on Lis forehead, showing that he received a blow. When De. Downey was found, after the shoot - ing, be was lying in his house stupified from the effects of !audanuin and spirits he bad taken, and his mind is now in such an excited state that it is considered unsafe to allow any one to converse with Lim We learn that it was stated in Staunton on Sat- urday night that the deceased had seduced a girl, and that in au interview with him Dr Downey endeavored to induce bim to marry her This led to an altercation, which terminated in the death of Mullins Crimrxat Cocet —After our report closed yesterday the case of the Uaited States vs. George Crouse, for asaault and battery on John W_ Hil- jery, with intent to kill, which was then pend- jug, was closed, and the Jury returaed a verdict of guilty as indicted Lemuel Harris was then called up on ac! e of aseanit on Alfred Carter. This case was sul mitted to the Court, and bis Honor, upon bear- ing the testimony of the prosecuting witness, and in view of the fact thai the defendant had already been in jail three months, sentenced him to be furjher imprisoned im the county jail fora space of three weeks and pay a tine of $1. George English, alias Marian Cond, was then brought up for au uit and battery on Andrew Langwell. This case was also submitted tothe Court, and English was sentenced to be impri- soned in the county jail one month, and peya fine of #5 Crouse was not sentence bis sentenre until the pend motion for a new trial in the caxe of Jacob W. Powers shall have been decided. That motion is to be argued before bis Honor ina day or two. The Court here adjourned ‘To-day the Conrt met at 1 o'clock, and the case of Willam Wilson was taken up, in which the defendant was charged with assault and battery ou Michsel Bowlin, with ‘intent to Kill, on the first day of last June. The assault rew out of the election riots in the Seveath Wore at the last June election. Carrington and Rooker for the defence. The case was concluded and given to the Jury as our report closed ; the Court reserving Ma. Puitagice’s Gist Saves, at 176 Pennsyl- Vania avenue, are in the full tide of successful operation. The public properly appreciate the graceful liberality of a trader who, after selling to his customer a sterling book of poetry, philoso- phy. traveis, romance, biography or science, to adorn and instruct his mind, accompanies the sale by a splendid gratuity toornament his or ber person, in the shape of a watch, bracelet, ger of sieeve-buttons, or some other equally rich gift Such a bounty for customers argues an expansive and liberal spirit, and of course brings them in throngs. Our city is unusually quiet, and the demon- strations for the approaching Christmas holidays among our merchants and others seem to us to be far less attractive than we have generally seen them heretofore. Ata few places the display is quite altractive and tempting, and these either hifve been or are now designated in the columns of the Star Forins‘ance, Se it his hand- some bat and fur emporium, displays an assort- nent of goods sufficiently tempting to bewilder our senses, and canse him or her to go to the very depths of their purse. In the way of dry goods, Mr Jobn H. Smoot presents a grand display, and offers rare inducements to the ladies to pur- chase. A S. Arny, in the way of confectionery, has an assortment rarely surpassed, and on terms so moderate that arty one can afford to procure a good supply for the Christmas holida Mrs Collins also offers a fine assortment toys for erased veanpenp forthe children.
