LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Craceit Covrt.—After our report closed yes- terday, the Court took up the habeas corpus case of Eagene O’Connor es. Margaret O°Connor, bis wife, to take from her his three children, Mari- anna, Eugene and James D. O'Connor. The re- spondent answered, ciaiming her right to the children on account of brutality of her hus- band. There was a e number of witnesses who gave testimony showing the petitioners bad temper, languaye and deportment, and that on bis own con! of wi , former differences bad been settled ; and on his wishing fora rec- onciliation on the last vecasion she had refused to be reconciled ; so he now claimed the chil- dien. Onthe other side, the petitioner had many witnesses to prove bis good character. The ma- jority of the court held that the children should = left with their mother for the present, and the case should be held over for advisement until the next term. It was so ordered. ‘The arguments in motion for a new trial of the case of Hewett vs. the Browns, in which the de- fendants bad been mulcted for the amount of a trunk lost, as was alleged, through the careless- ness of the defendants’ porter, were not conclud- ed yesterday whea the Court adjourned. To-day, the Court took up the case of officer L.. Keese. the rule, to show cause why he hould net be dismissed from ottice, on account of alleged malfeasance. Chilton for the prosecu- tion, Carlisle and Maury for defence Previous to taking up the above case the Court announced that they bad considered the case of Robert Cross, now in jail under sentence of the Criminal Court and saw no reason why he should not be remanded to punishment as per sentence of bis Honor, Judge Crawford it will be recollected that Cross was sentenced to eight years i isonment fn the penitentiary for ting and shooting Officer Ratinen. of the Sixth Police District, while in the discharge of his duty tn attempting to arrest him (Cross) foran alleged connection with certain election siots im the Seventh Ward on the first June lsat. The Court then took the case of Bill Mon- key, alias Wm. Williams, wherein the defend- aol, a colored boy, stood charged with larceny of a silver watch valued at $f2, the property of Robert Bates, also colored. The proofs of the theft were abundant; and the jury returned a ver- dict of guilty. A lad, under fourteen years of age, named Wm Henry Harrison Butterbangh, was then brou: up on « charge of stealing a Lat, valued at 81 from Thomas H. Havenner. His extreme youth and the lngenuousness of bis countenanc?® won for him the compassion of all beholders, and Mr. Maury charitably appeared as his counsel. The facts given in evidence did not amount to proof, except an admission made to the officer who ar- sested him, wherein the boy confessed tiat another Loy stole the hat, and that he (the prisoner) sold itteathird boy on Capitol Hill. ‘The jury re- turned a verdict of not guilty, and the boy was accordingly discharged. ‘This case closed the trials for the da nd the prisoners who bad been convicted were drawn up in line and lectured appro; riately by his Honor, and then sentenced as follows: Jobu Thompson, to one year’s imprisonment in the penitentiary George Jenkins, to six months in the County Jail, and a fine of $1 Matthew Butler, to one year’s confinement in the Penitentiary; and Bill Monkey, alias Wil- liams, to six months in the County Jail, and a fine of $1.
