Ut would be tedious to notice in detail the ebjections, many of them Puerile, which have been urged. ‘The abrogation of the usury laws has been ob- jected to because it is imagined that such abroga- tion ts opposed tothe Bible. Without discussing this question ot usnary, already thoroughly dis- ens and underst: by intelligent business men, it is sufticient to say that the abrogation re- ferred to is no more in opposition to the Bible than was the doctrine of Galileo that tle earth moved round the sun. The narrow-minded- ness that songht to defend the Bible, which needed no defence against the discoveries of philosophy, seeks to defend the B the imaginary hostility of the laws of trade. But without voing further into the merits of the new Cede, | would suggest that the gentlemen who prepared it be invited to answer, in one or more public lectares such objections as may ap- pear most plausible. If we unadvisedly reject this Code, which is contained in one volume, plainly written and well indexed so that every man ean find out and understand his ha apy and subject as It is to fu- ture amendment Congress, we will have to suffer the inconveniences of our Present cumber- some system mntil Congress can be induced to | Stag another, which may be equally unsatis- factory. ¥, pas Naw Tue RePoRtT oF THE SECRETARY OF THR IN- Trenton has, as usval, much matter of District interest. In respect to opening and keeping in repair streets, avenues, lines, alleys, drains, and sew- ers, etc., etc., it is deemed eminently proper that these improvements should be made, in par- suance of the provisions of the charter, under the direction of the city authorities; and hence no estimates have been submitted therefor by this Department. ‘To re-imburse the Corporation a just proportion of the expense incurred in opening and improy- ing streets passing through and slong public sqnares, an estimate has been submitted for an appropriation out of the National ‘Treasury, as the resources out of money arising from the sale of Government city lots have now failed Liberal appropriations are recommended (when ever the condition of the Treasury will admit) for continuation of the improvements upon the Gov- ment reservations It ts recommended that appointments to the auxillary guard should, before they take effect, be repoited to and approved by some officer of the Government, either the Commissioner of Pub- lic Bnildings or the Marshal of the District of Columbia, and to give such officer the power of removal from office whenever, in his opinion, the public good may render it necessary Serving nk Mrssace.—On five or six of the city rontes of the Star we were unable to get the Message in the hands of our carriers last night in time to kave them served until this morning.
