———— Tuz Rivss.—Aboat the wharves, this morn- ing, business was rather lively, and the erisp, pleasant air of early day sent aglow alt over one, immensely previuctive of activity. Several schooners were toWed wp the George- town channel this morning, by the James Guy. At Riley's wharf, arrived schooner Three Sis- ters, Capt. Nerris, from Philadelphia, with 118 fons coal. At Magruder & Stone's wharf, schr. The harkeeper of the boat, -a‘colored man, named John Wallace, was fool- éng witha —— horse pistol, loaded with slugs, im company With one of the omprbus drivers, Henry Jackson, when the pistol, while in the hands of Watlace, was discharged, two balls taking effect In the head and face of Jackson; one bal! struck the forehead nearly between the eyes, and the ether tore off a portion of the right cheek. The aceident occurred shortly after the Page left Washington for Alexandria on her ! o'clock p. va. trip: but Wallace, being frightened, did not communicate the oecnrrence—which took place im the bar reom an the lower deck—until the boat was balf way to Alexandria Labi atten- tion then was paid to the unfortunate fellow on the boat, and on its arriva] at Alexandria two surgeons were summoned, Who. we understand, Probed the woulds making an unsuccessful at- tempt to extract one of the balls. The distributing room is, with the ex- ception of the benches for the distributing clerks, completed. ‘The ceiling, which is of iron simi- lar to many of the large rooms in the new Cap! tol, bas been frescoed in an elaborate and taste- ful style, and eis spptepeiatety heat. The roof is entirely of iron and copper, and completely fire proof. In the front of the distributing room ‘workmen are = in putting together and —— up letter boxes. The numbered, or sub- scription boxes are to have in front iron sash with the numbers painted on the panes of glass. Stone Masons are engaged in laying the flagging on the floors of the area and vestibule. The west angle of the north front wall is nearly up, and in front of the New Post Office the marble cutters are covering in the vestibule ceiling. ‘The workmen expect to have the New City Post Oflice ready for use in about a week; if not as soon as one week, very soon thereafter. This will afford an opportunity for rns | down the building now occupied by the City Post Office, which will be 2 good winter's job for many poor laborers who are out of employment. The west continuation third-story rooms are now up, and the roofers are engaged in covering them in. The rooms imme- diately adjoining the City Post Office are to be finished off as soon as possible for the use of the City Postmaster and his clerks. Tut Corner Stoxe of THE ALMs House — Yesterday afternoon. a company consisting of of- ficers of the Corporation, members of the City Councils, and other prominent citizens, assem- died at the city farm to witness the ceremony of laying the corner stone of the new almshouse. W bea the arrangements were completed, Mayor Mageude:. in a few appropriate remarks, an- nounced the object of the a and pro- ceeded to read the list of articles to deposited ja the stone, at the xame time exhibiting them to the company—as follows: A list of the officers of the General Government, list of the members of the present Congress, list of the officers of the Corporation. list of the officers of the Asylum, list containing the names of the joint building committee, the architect and contractor, copies of the daily National Intelligencer, Union, and Evening Star, and handsome copy of the Holy Bible. The lists of the Corporation were beauti- fully insezibed upon parchment by C. Darby, an old man who has been an inmate of the Asylum for many years. x ‘The deposit having been made and capstone Placed, the company, at the invitation of the con- tractor, repaired to the Intendant’s house, where atable had been spread for their entertainment Speeches, songs and toast were the order of the evening, and of course good humor.prevailed. Cheer upon cheer, interspersed with a few growls of “the tiger,”? were heard for the first time in that vicinity. The company enjoyed a merry afternoon, and dispersed at an early hour in the evening. On his making his appearance, he was ad- dressed on the faa of the assembled company by Major W ina, of Lilinois, welcoming Mr. Douglas back to the scene of his senatorial labors. Mr. Douglas made a pertinent speech in reply, ju which he spoke of his long residence in this city, and of the uniform good feeling which had ebaracterized this intercourse with our citizens on all occasions On political topics he did not enlarge particu- larly, rather to the disappointment of some of his auditory, but contented himself with saying that his future would be that of strict adherence to what he believed to be his line of duty, and in firm adherence to bis oath to support to the best of bis knowledge ard ability the Constitution of the United States. Later in the night, Mr. Donglas was serenaded again by the Metropolitan Hook and Ladder Com- Pany, with Esputa’s band. Mr. Douglas replied appropriately on behalf of Mrs. Douglas, to whom the serenade was specially addressed The Metropolitans afterwards serenaded Mr M Cutts, the father of Mrs. Douglas, by whom they were handsomely entertained. Tue Government Gueex Hovse.—Under the care of Mr. Smith, the head gardener at the Gov- ernment Green Houses, the plants and flowers look in capital condition. The marks of the great hail storm of last June are, however, still apparent, and the beautiful foliage of the palm and other plants of this family shows how disas- trous was its effect upon them. The tree plants have just been removed tothe new hot house Var improvements have been effected about the grounds during the pas’ niner and fall, an important one of which is a flag footway down the centre of tho grounds, leading from the foot of the Capitol to the Tiber Creek, and of a width corresponding to the stone walks in the Capitol Groands. Some changes as to the gravel walks have been planned and are being executed, whieh will give the grounds a natural and gural look. Dean Irems.—Our neighborhood was enliven- ed, indeed. { may say astounded, last night, bya serenade by one of the fine bands of the city (per haps the excellent Marine Band) which would have Been unexceptionable and most delightful, had it not been for a certain base instrument which was continually interrupting “the concord of sweet sounds.”” Now I want to know where were the night watch, the » police, the Auxiliary Guard, or even his Honor the Mayor, himself? Howhbeit, this serenade was near 7th peigpay os surely he could not have escaped hear- ing, at his residence, this incessant and intolera- ble thumping. Where were these conservators of the peace that they did not hunt out this in- truder, and put him in the jug? (1 fear he had already been too nenr a pas I have heard of bands having a big drum with them for some purpose or oth Tam not musician enough to say for what—but ceftainly the enthusiastic per- former I here allude to, could have formed no partof the otherwise delightful band, unless they employed him to go about with them to wake people up. Having accomplished this with two or three of his vigorous flourishes, he should have ceased further operations. But, I suppose that he was employed by the hour, and was too conscientious to omit work. He is an honest and brave fellow after all; for, as we have shown him to be honest, so he must be brave whocould dare to run the risk of being picked up by our BL regs Police, to encounter the execrations of a whole neighborhoed (yea, half the city) and to nullify such sweet, pure strains as floated on the enchanted air; and-all this, too, on such a charm- ing moonlight night as was the night of the first day of winter. Yours, A Lover or Music, Though not a connoisseur ef base druins. P S—A thought suggests an explanation of this gentleman's continued performance, viz: that as the mingled sounds of saxhorn, clarionet, ophicleide, bassoon, ete., stealing so sweetly and softly o’er the soul tend to sleep, this fellow is ingenionsly slipped in—(under a horrid muilsical license)—to keep people awake. Srapeine Case.—Last night, a number of young men assembled in the back roomof Birch's restaurant, near Second street, got up a difficulty which ended ina fight and the stabbing of Jos Goldsmith. The wound isa severe one, the knife entering the neck near the jugular vein, and in- flieting a gash downward, and of dangerous ap- ‘arance.
