LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Tat Dexomination called “ Disciples of the Church of God,’’ had a baptising yesterday (Sunday) afternoon, at the foot of Eighth sireet, Island The extreme beauty of the day and tbe novelty of the ceremonial induced a large attendance; the immediate river shores Leing lined with spectators, and also the high biaffoverlooking thescene. Thissociety, we be- heve advocates 3 restoration of the original Gos- pei and order of things, they regarding all the sects and parties of the religious world as having departed from the simplicity of faith and man- ners of the first christians, and as forming what the Apostle Paui calis “the Apostacy deny the validity of infant —— aud main- tain the necessity of immersion in ruaning water. Two persons, « male and female, were baptised vesterday, and the rite was performed by Rev. Jesse Appler, of this city, assisted by Rev. John Mitchell. of Baltimore A bymn was sung. prayer offered. and then the assembiage was addressed by Mr. Mitchell, @ blind man, and who has lost an arm. His decla- metion, delivered with rough energy and with fons from the stentorian shout ional tone, was mainly denun- ciatory of other denominations, and especially of their baptismal forms —sprinkling, pedo-bap- tis, and church baptism ‘in warm pools of water.’ -* The man baptized like a fool in church might fod that he was baptized in damnation,” and soon. Washington city be thought a par- ticularly bard piace, and Baltimore was like ento it The two cities he designated as ‘‘twin cities of Sodom "* Tle candidates for baptism, dressed in gowns of white muslin loaded at the bottom to make them sink, were then orought to the water’s edge and in turn led into the river bt a officiating Elder. When atasufficieat d the candidate supported under the shoulders jes right hat of the minister, was leaned kwards and dipped once, the usual words ‘‘ [ baptise thee,”’ &c., being uttered by the minister at the saine time On emerging from the water, the friends of the candidates wiped their faces with napkins, and threw dry woolen clothing over them. The au- dience was afterwards dismissed, with a bene- diction. In the evening this Soctety met at Temperance Hall to celebrate the Lord's iar yond and the * washing of the saints’ feet,” which was per- formed literally by the members, who were clad iu white aprons for the occasion. A part of the exercises consisted of xome very audible kissing amonzst the male communicenis. The Hail was denvely crowded, and the audienes, composed largely of boys, mounted upon the seats and in other ways exhibited so much clamorous solici- tude to get a good look at what they evidently viewed as a capital farce, as to draw a character- istic rebuke from the no ways ‘-mealy-mouthed” Baltimore Elder. Vireinta Cosrexexce M. E. Cuvacn Sours. This bedy, which bas been in session at Eliza- beth City, N.C, for 2 week or two past, bas ad- journed On the eighth day of the session, the resolu- tions of the Alabama and Holston Conferences, in which they axk the concurrence of the Virgi- ula Conference, came up as the order of the day atten o'clock. The resolation of the Alabama Conference memorializing the General Confer- ence to strike out frou. the Discipline the general rule referring to the subject of slavery was con- curred in. On the motion to concur, the vote stood ayes 114; noes, none. During the examination of character, a case of interest occupied attention, and produced some spicy discussions. The charge was against J.E Edwards and L_ Rosser, for tedutzing ina game { ‘ten pins’? at the Virginia Springs during the past Summer; aud was founded upon the state- ment made by a correspondent of the Elizabeth City American Sentinel, published in that paper some time in August. The defendants plead guilty to the charge, and, while expressing their regret for the act, denied the intentional commis- sion of wrong, and resorted to the game as a healthy and harmless exercise. The character of the two gentlemen inculpated, would never sub- ject them to the —< of a wanton disregard of the obligations and duties appertaining to their ‘voeat and however improper a resort to the bow! alley by a Christian minister, there can- not bea doubt that the reason assigned—a zood and sufficient one we might say, if allowed to = an opinion—was the true one. Messrs. Edwards and Rosser pledyed themselves from ail future indulgence in the game complained of, and the conference declined any further action in the premises The following appointments have been made : Rev. Tux Onnincs Accipayt—We»have received the following from Mr. Laiham: ALEXANDRIA, Nov. 30, 1857, WD Wallach, Esq.—Dear Sir: In the Star of the 27th inst. is a statement relative to the acci- dent that occurred on the George the day previons. I do not know who fu your reporter with the statement, but this I do know, that there is nego | truth enough to save it from being branded asa tissue of falsehoods to screen the really guilty party, or to gratify as mean as ’tis contemptible. The accu- racy of your reporter gave the article a weight that was calculated to do a ice. 1 Will state that it has ress rape to me that the horses had been looked avery few minutes before they started, and that one of the men had started out, just as the horses started, to look again. Mr. Rudd, the agent, was the only person on the forward when the horses started, and he done all he could to stop them. My loss and anxiety of mind ts 4nfficiently great without being the victim of the slanderer. You will please insert this together with the sub- joined report from the Alexandria Gazette Yours, &c., Hues Latuam. “Serious Loss.—Mr. Hugh Latham met with a most serious loss on eran, | morning last, by the drowning of three of his horses, and the de- struction of one of his large omnibuses. As the steamer George Page was making her trip to Washington, on Thursday morning, at balf-past four o’clock, with the mailsand passengers cing > north from the Orange and Alexandria railroat and when off tbe Eastern branch, the boat en- countered considerable quantities of ice, and the noise made by the paddle wheels ayainst it scared the horses attached to one of Mr. Latham’s omni- buses, aod they rushed wildly through the boat, and before they could be bor Sag Tea over- board, dragging after them the omnibus, (the Joha S. Barbour,) which was run into by the boat and the body of it smashed. One of the horses became loosened from the gearing and swam ashore, and was saved, but was very much injured, (and has since died.) the other three were drowned. Mr. L.’s loss, it is estimated, will be about $1,000, and much regret is felt for him. Foctunately, there was no one in the om- nibus at the time. The driver had left his horses @ moment to warin bimself.” Ovr RevBex objects decidedly (especially as he is getting weak-eyed himself) to the phrasein & morning city paper «‘ blind, but honest,”? In an appeal in behalf of a bliad poet. * Cross-eyed but honest? might pass; as obliquity of vision may perhaps be sugyestive of a moral twist «in- ister, but he can't go it “blind? & Why,” says Reuben, ‘we shall next lave it « Spectacted but honest.”!? He thinks itabont time, too, for folks in indigent circumstances to repudiate the vil- lainous phrase ‘peor but honest.”” In view of the manner-in which wealth is generally ac- quired he suggests that “rich but honest”? would sound better. Cuvrcn Alstes axo Crixottve.— We have spoken of a young lady, dressed in the style, rasp- ing her way up the aisle of the Unitarian church ina manner to draw all eyes. She managed to get in with a squeeze; but not so fortunate was a young lady who ey morning presented erself at McKendree Chapel, encased in hoops of such dimensions that, after several mortifying failures to force a —- up any of the alleys, she beat a retreat, with the perspiration standing in beads on her pretty forehead. Whether she sought at any other church for aisles of a broad- enough guage to allow her entrance, or whether she returned discouraged to her home, is not kaown. A Live * Countess” at Cagvei's —Madame Lola Montez, Countess of Landsfeld, lectures to- night on “* Beantiful Women.’ She is undoubt- edly one of the celebrities of the world, and, as such, would be sure of an audience; but we may add that the press of the country seems to be unanimous in speaking of her lectures as having intrinsic merits of their own, making them well worth hearing. By the way, why will the spir- itueite Countess not favor us with her entire se- Ties of lectures? Pror. Dantet and the Wesley Chapel Choir are names sufficient to invoke an andience when- ever they announce a concert. That to be given by them on Wednesday night promises to afford a fine treat of music, somewhat less florid than the run of concert music and thereby affording a wholesome variety of musical diet.
