The Speaber’s retiring room might be termed, not bowl ao ately, the Temple of American Art. The jury in this case was sworn, and the case stated to them by Mr. Baxter for plaintiff. The Court then adjourned This morning the jury, in the case of McGreg- or vs. Grammer, being called, gave a sealed ver- dict for the defendant. ‘The court then went into consideration of the case of Mayo vs. Gideon, where it had been dropped yesterday evening Me Bradley, for defence, stated to the jury what the defence expected to prove in evidence in retation to the matter pending; and then the examination of witnesses was gone into, and was being continued when this report closed. The river line agrees to carry the through mail, twice a day, at three hundred dollars per mile, for nine months of the year; the remaining three months the Orange & Alex- audria and the Central Railroads agree to carry the sume mail at the same rate once a day it is understood, however, that the agreement with the Orange and Central Ruads is not to take effect except during such portion of the three months agreed upon as the river line shail be unable to go through regularly. What a monster is that Ditle phrase “hey say;"” and yet, notwithstanding the indefinite character of tts ree incalculable amount of mia- chief it has and again wrought in commu- nities, societies and fumilies—the hundreds of unsullied characters its use has bleared and blackened —the unjust, unmerited and mean ci lous, against some reputations in almost every community,-it 16 somewhat re- remarkable that there is to be found in circle in life numbers of both and female, who potas tenes ves upon their re- spectability, and who would almost go into con- vulsions if any one should hint that their charac- ters for truth and veracity were doubtful, roll it as a sweet morse] under, or rather over their tongues, and emit it from their lips with as much justo as they would the most beautiful Passage: From Holy Writ, or Yow Night Thoughts. Surely, if the devotees of this detestable gossip- ers’ moloch could have portray before them one tithe of the misclilef that it is constantly do- ing, they would enter into covenant with ir lips that the detestable phrase should never again e them. s We have been induced to make these remarks by bette ae nces Rede ig genee’ trans; m our city, a em a report, which was put in ciretbision &hew days since, to the effect that the Regulators, as they are called, orthe States Hose y, were coming over on Thanksgiving Day to cut down the Know Noth- ing pole at the fish dock. At every corner of the streets, in the market, at the church doors, among every group of men and boys, this was the only theme of sion. And, notwithstanding the Teport was in itself too downright absurd and, ridiculous to be entertained for a single moment by any except the most credulous lovers of gos- at, it soon spread through the town, and be- came the only string we could hear ha: pon by the lovers of the marvellous. The It was uite a warlike demonstration upon the part of the more valiant sort of the fish dock polites. And we suppose that had a dozen strangers been seen at any time during the day going in the direction of the pole, that lots of Wolvers and Booby’s knives would have leaped from their hiding places, and the imaginary invading part: would have been snags upon and extermi- mated, to the great scan ing that some mischief ep yo be brewing to mar the peace of the day—to disgrace our town—we inquired diligently as to the foundation of the rumor, and from every one, even those who as- sured us that they knew it to be even so, we re- ceived the same ridiculous My, A fete say. The result 18, we have not seen the Regulators yet, and the pole sti!l stands as a memento of the last great political battle. ‘The offerings of beef cattle at the drove yards yesterdzy amounted to about 300 head—250 were urchased by the District butchers, at $3a4 on the Boor nal fo $6a8 net; the remainder were taken to Baltimore.
