LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Tus Riven —The cold nights lately have pro- duced on the river—along shores as far out as the channel—a sheet of an inch in thickness, and nearly stron; aos oe an’s weight. At tbe coal w’ ere is pr doing except the unloading of a few coal vessels. “Quite an excitement was produced at Page's whart yesterday by an accident which happened to one of the omnibuses attached to the Latham line. While the Page was on her four o'clock, a. m. trip to Washington, she encoun- tered off Geesbury an extensive fleld of ice which had formed during the night to the thickness of about one inch, and the noise produced by the action of the boat against the — ice, frightened the horses attached to the omnibus on board, to such an extent, that several passengers were obliged to catch them by the bridles to re- strain them. This occurred several times—the drivers being all the while asleep in the cabins Finally, the horses not being fastened (as is usual while on the boat) became perfectly unmanagea- bie, snd broke from those who were endeavoring to held them. and commenced to plunge back- wards and forwards in a terrified manner; aud Capt. Price thinking to quiet them by stopping the boat, gave the order to tnat effect. As soon as this could be effected, the terrified animals started on a ron down the length of the boat to the bows, and lea; overboard, carrying the omnibus along with them. Three of the horses came up to the surface dead, and the fourth breaking from the harness, struck out for the ad- jacent shore. The omnibus went down in about 25 feet of water. The boat proceeded up to the wharf, and on her return to Alexandria, found, in passing the scene of the accident, the fourth horse still slive and swimming about in the wa- ter. The steamer was stopped, a boat lowered, the almost frozen anima! foreed ashore through the ice. Capt. Price states that if the horses had been fastened to the boat, i: would have been next to impossible for the accident to have oc- curred. . There is nothing new from Alexandria. The ‘Thanksgiving Day passed off in a very quiet manner. There were no arrivals at the wharves. Despite all drawbacks the work oa the Wash- ington Agneduct continues to be prosecuted as rapidly, perhaps, as is desirable in view of the solidity of construction demanded. At Lock seven, Mr. P. Crowley is working a large force day and night upon the two tunnels— one, nine Lundred, the other five hundred feet in lragth. he has also in construction—some four miles above—fonr or five other tunnels from two to eight hundred feet in length. ‘The longest one will be finished by January, and the others will be near completion at that time. This work is not oaly rapidly but well done. The Government is also having done some fine masonry at different points along the line, re- flecting credit upon the superintendents. The brick conduit is finished tn several places wherever the grading has been completed. The engineers are giving the work the closest seruti- ny as it goes ou—especially the embankments; it being essential that these should be secured against giving way At the Great Falls the Government is making fine progress with the work, having about five pope td employed at this point. A large quautity of stone and other materials is on the ground in readiness for the commence- ment of work upon the dam. Ova Ravses fell asleep last night, in his arm chair, and like John Bunyan dreamed a dream. He dreamed that flour was four dollars a barrel, and steak six cents a pound. He dreamed that a dress-reform was inaugurated—bonnets enlarged, skirts reduced, and calico the ticket. He dreamed that “Plog Uglies” and “Regulators”? had tarned their bowies and revolvers ploughshares, and pruning hooks, and frateri®zed amicably as Suanday-school Teachers, members of Youn: Men’s Christian Associations; and societies o: total abstinence from the use of slang and slung- shot. He dreamed that parents exercised a whole- some control over their children; and that chil- dren repaid their care by filial love, respect, and obedience. He dreamed that the banks were discounting and redeeming in specie; that the Wasbington Monument wascompleted; the mali lighted up with gas; the Armory turued over to the District Regiment; the Jail removed; the Aqueduct ia play; the Alexandria boats running at regular hours; i the Capitol a dome; the river a channel and wall : These, and many other things, be saw in thie singular vision; whieh vision, as he awoke and rubbed bis eyes, dissolved into thin air, like that other ‘baseless fabric’? we read about. Mr. Joun Gitetx, Jz., came to this city on the eveniag before Thanksgiving—not on horseback but in a buggy—bat the horse he drove was evi- dently a scion of the original stock, from the reckless go-aheadativeness he displayed in going down Twelfth street, and bis subsequent umex- ed call at the engine house of the Fran The manner in which the an- and dove, bead most, against the above handsome etlifice must have Leen trying to the nervous sensibill- ties of Mr. Gilpin, Jr. A crowd of persons made tor the spot as soon as the horse brought up, with the expectation of finding a dead man there, but Mr. G_.. jr. was found all right in the buggy, witha ng face, and on being questioned as to the ewuse of Lis very startling advent in the Federal Metropolis made answer in true Yankee style by asking the erowd what they would take to dr We are sorry to cast a shade on the re- > sikh! bendrardeare ef so worthy a sire, but the truth must be told—Joha Gilpin, jr , was very much intoxicated Tue Maaxer. —Wednesday afternoon the Cer- tre Market was opened for dealers, the usual Thursday market being suspended as the day had Leen set apart for thanksgiving. The attendance of country dealers was Sse slim, and the prices higher than upon the regular marketdays. Tur- keys were selling at $1 25083 each. This was considered extraordinary high, as a large quan- tity of pou-try bad been recently brought to the city for sale; one drove of turkeys alone, num- bering over three hundred, having crossed the Long Bridge on Tuesday. Though the quantit of provisions offered in the market was sonal, yet the quality was excellent A number of dealers from distant counties of Maryland and Virginia arrived at the market space yesterday morning, not knowing that the murket bad taken place the evening before.
