LOCAL-INTELLIGENCE.| Miss Jeniawa May’s SaconnCoxcent.—Well, the weather last night was sufficiently disagree- able, one would suppose, to have dismayed the most inveterate comet ae hip aryn Sheen petri: nok falr-weather display of coiffures and opera cloaks. Modest little Sanderson, rowing favorite, by , performed acceptably a ja from pai * ‘Then entered Miss May, and every <i opera glass was leveled at her, of course; <2a the Seatince auditors voted her “ hand- some,’ and the ladies, after the most critical ex- amination, could not but admit that she was «well dress » ‘The eye satisfied, the ear was next ealled upon to give judgment. She gave «Casta Diva’? with critical exactness, and the audience was satisfied, but by no means warmed. Palmer then performed Thalberg’s ‘‘ Prayer from Moses’’ ver’ ually, now coming up nearly to the excellence of its author in its per- formance, and anon rather fatiguing his hearers Miss May next performed *-0 luce quest anima,” (Linda,) with a warmth and brilliancy which took the house a deal by surprise, and the public delight was manifested in the heartiest applause. Mr. Frazer, a tenor of reputation, sang an aria fairly, but was quite evidently suffering from hoarseness. For his next i he judicious- ly substituted that spirited old song, ‘* The Bay of Biscay, oh; which he delivered with fine effect. We must really quarrel with Miss May for her performance of *‘Comin’ thro’ the rye.’ She sung it well, but with cold precision, and every- body who heard and saw Sontag execute this charming Scotch ballad, knows how immeasura- bly its effect was heightened by the archness of manner and mobility of countenance with which it was delivered. iss May, on the npg wee to convey the idea that getting kissed in that field of grain was rather a solemn affair. But, a# if she aimed at «trong contrasts, her next piece, ‘Robert toi que j’aime,” was deli- ciously, exquisitely performed, even to the nicest shades of accent. ‘Thoroughly in lp: po with her audience, her performance of * } Soguo,” (Lombgrdi,) tended yet further to carry it away, and in Snswer to the thundering encore, she sang, with touching sweetness and purity, * Home, Sweet Home.’” Mr. Palmer's execution of “ Airs Russes”’ was in his best style, and Mr. Sanderson concluded the concert with the brilliantly rendered “ Jnii- ana Polka,’ his own composition, by the way. now on fu Cinctir Covrt.—After our report closed yes- terday the case of Jerome B Green rs. James M. Busher was concluded by a verdict for plaintiff, with da: assessed at $75, and interest from 3th July, 1656 - The Court then took up the case of Wilson C Hewitt rs. Marshall & Tilletson Brown. This was an action brought to recover the value of a trunk lost through the alleged careles<ness of the defendants’ baggage agent. The case was con- cluded and went to the jury, but no verdict was given prior to adjournment. The jury, after he- ing out some time, sent back word that they could not agree upon a verdict in consequence of some misapprehension as to the evidence. So the Court allowed them to go their homes with the order to appear at court this morning and go into a farther consultation. This morning the Court met, and the jury in the above case were sent tothe jury room, after bearing some explanation from the counsel in re- lation to the point in the evidence about which they had disagreed The Court then took up the case of Thomas P. and Arkana C. Staley, by their next friend, es Samuel M. Knight. This wasan action tn as- sumpsit to recover certain moneys held by the defendant for the use of the plaintiffs, which moneys had never been accounted for. Carring- ton for plaintiffs, Morgxn for defence. Verdict for plaintif’—damages *!55, with interest from Ist Joly, 1566. The Court then took up the case of John B. Morgan ts. Wm. H. Fanning. In this case the plaistif? bad rented a house toa party, and the rent falling in arrear the defendant in this case was employed to levy adistrain for the said rent. ‘The distrain was duly levied, and the goods of the party taken jon of, and afterwards xiven back in indulgence tothe party owing said Tent, without the rent first having been satisfied. Th rty, it was alleged, then secreted or con- veyed away the said goods, and the rent was thus lost. The action was brought to recover from the defendant the amount of said rent Davidge and Swann for plaintitr; Giberson and Wharton for defence. ‘This case was pending when this report closed. T Grain Preithteits —Notwithstanding the paucity of theatrical amusements in this city, out German friends manage to make quite a display in dramaties for their own and their friends’ mu. tual entertainment. The Washington German Turner Association bave resection at their Hall on New J avenue, a stage, with ap scenery painted by the Italian fresco painters at the Capitol-extension works, where ¢! have frequent dramatic entertainments in the German language. On last Friday night an entertainment ‘was given to their friends by the Italians at the Capitol. A large party of persons were present; speeches were made, and songs wang, in some half a dozen different languages. e play for the evening was delivered In the German lan- guage, and entitled Schlafrock und die Uniform; or, the Robe de Chambre and the Uniform. The lay was exceedingly well performed, as the Boar plaudits of the audience testified; and at its close, the seats in the Hall were cleared out, and several hours were passed most pleasantly by the company in the enjoyments of the merry dance The whole entertainment passed off jn the most quiet manner; nothing occurring to mar the universal good feeling, except the uninvited obtrusion of some half a dozen members of the night watch into the Hall, with cigars in their mouths, at which they sucked away, filling the room with a sickly odor, in spite of the regula- tious of the Association, which prohibit the use of tobacco in the Hall. Those present—and a larg proportion of them were ladies and gentle- men of high Tespectability and unexceptionable good breeding—were Sinn! enough disgusted by such acts of wanton vulgarity on the part of the uninvited guests; and they very ap rd deemed that those who do not pay for their entertain ment should not make their presence so disa- greeably apparent. RENEWAL OF THE Hoe War —This morning the persons employed to enforce the law in rela- tion to b going at large, went to that portion of the Fourts Ward pari Government print- ing office, to discharge their duty. They were resisted by a crowd of men and women, and offi- cers Watson and Gardner went to their assist- ance. Correspondence of The Star. . Guronoztown, Nov. 20, 1857. ‘The passage by the Council on Monday even- ing of an ordinance appropriating one hundred dollars to assist in the establishment of a ferry over the Potomac, af the Little Falls, has caused. no little alarm among a 1. rtion of our own citizens and those of Virginia, who are in the habit of attending the District markets for the dis; of their produce. It has been construed into an intention upon the part of our city author- ities to allow the present thoroughfare for travel to and from Virginia to be interru; the re- moval of the inclined plane at the Little Falls bridge, by the contractors for the construction of the wooden superstructure of said bridge. That such a step just at this time would prove greatly injurious to our citizens generally it certainly re- quires no arguments to prove. This inclined plane furnishes the only reliable means of crossing the Potomac at or near this point, and to remove it at this season of the year ust at the commencement of the fall trade. an leave those who supply our markets with nearly all the articles that enters into the daily consump- tion of er family, to say nothing of the enor- mons quantities of or and wood which daily, during the fall and winter months, crosses at this point, and to the uncertainties of a ferry, and that, too, merely to accommodate two or three | aap would be, we think, acting sui- cidal in the extreme. We all know that it is almost an impossibility to operate a ferry at this point so as to properly accommodate ordinary market wagons dating even the summer months, much less the heavy class of vebicles generally used in the transportation of the heavier articies of trade, such as pork, &c., and that, too, ata season of the year when the river, at this point, is liable to almost daily interruptions by freshets, ice, and from other causes. We have been informed that some person or persons engaged upon the work atthe lope fr hus alread: notified the citizens of Virginia of their intention to remove the inclined plane before spoken of, and thus suspend the travel over the bridge. If this be the faet, we sincerely hope that our city authorities will take immediate steps to prevent this intention from being carried into execution. As has already been said, ‘- suf- ficient unto the day is the evil thereof.’ If the contractors are Loar | to commence raising the superstructure, let them complete the interme- diate spans and leave the connection with those already up and the spans over the canal to be raised last. During this time the masonry can be (if the weather continues favor@bte for such work) completed so that there need occur but one interruption to travel, and that at a period of the year when it will not be so seriously felt. . e have been requested by R. Ould, Esq., to say that copies of the new code of laws for the District will be left at the Mayor's for distribu- tion Saturday or Monday.
