LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Tue RiceMoxy Crstom-Hovst Rossexy — Robert Wheeler, alias Pulling, and William J. Somerville, have been examined before the Hust- ing’s Court, at Richmond, and fully commitled for trial at the Superior Court. The Richmond yon oes that the examina- tion was attended ‘“‘with some remarkable inck dents. The deunciation of one of the witnesses by Judge Crump, counsel for the accused, we have already referred to, and shall now endeavor to give a report of the sequel. On Thursday the examination of Pulling was Tesumed. Among the witnesses was officer Wm. A of Washington, whose evidence in the case of Somerville evoked Judge Crump’s anim- adversion. He stated that he arrested Pulling at the Petersburg depot, on the morning the money ‘was recovered. just as he wus about stepping on the train. Teld him that wasn’t right; | would have to take him into custody.’ Witness then conducted bim to a hack, and prisoner remarked ‘you fellows have treated me mighty nice; get me 2 knife und | will cut my throat.”’ The back then proceeded to the ‘cage’? with witness and prisoner, where the latter was transferred to the custody of the in_of the night watch. On the way hither, Pulling eeres Mage ye about $2,000) ia bis possession, whic’ ness sepositea ber with the clerk of the American Hotel. aestion—\Was there not a previous under- stan that this man (Pulling) was to be «let g°”" by Allen and to be retaken by you? Answer—No. In answer to further interrogatories witness said that Mr. Allen told the Secretary of the Treasury that Pulling bad offered to give up $15,000 if be—Allen—would let him go. Mr. Cobb remarked that be wanted to convict the rty; money was the secondary object _ On oard the bos, coming hither, Pulling inquired of witness “ Do you know how the thing isto be managed’? Witness replied ‘‘Certainly !’" Mr. Gilmer, associate counsel of Pulling, asked witness if he did actually know how the ‘thing wes to be managed.’ Witness replied that he did not, and after some further remarks ad- mitted, responsively, thal he would tell five hun- dred Pt: hag cagen: b daprsartre gage ry todo so. in order that the public might be benefitted. Mr. Gilmer satd—*Then you consider it a part of your business to tel lies?” Witness replied—-* Yes, and yours too!” Mr. Gilmer arose and addressed the Court with some warmth, declaring that be had submitted long 'h to this impudence, and he conceived that the dignity of the Court. if not bis personal rights bad been invaded by this witness. Ate Boss asked leave to say afew words. He stated that he had been an officer for eight rs, and had never offered an insult to any tribunal before which he appeared as a witness, as all the Judges and May strates in the District of Co- jumbia could testify. He had come to this city a stranger, to aid in bringing an offender to jus- tice. and Lis character has been assailed by coun- sel, and his feelings outraged. He claimed the otection of the Court while he stood before heim. Outside of the Court he knew how to protect himself. The remarks elicited a decided demonstration of applause from the fg Sine aagee which, of course, the Sergeant and his deputy, endeavored to wap- press immediately, by commanding “ silence.” Mr. Gilmersaid that he did not fear the threats of the witness. He had endeavored to conduct the examination with propriety, and wanted to know in what manner fe ad outraged the feel- ings of the witness. t. Boss —You have tried to make it appear that I bave got the balance of these ill-gotten zine; that I have fied; and do you not think fiat I woold be beneath the notice of the Court did I fail to resent these assaults here ? The Recorder, Jno. L.. Tate, Esq., said that the whole manner of proceeding had 0 irregular, and it was the ———— of the Court that the wit- ness had been harshly treated by the counsel ; that the witness had acted improperly toward the counsel, and that the Court reprobated the applause, and if any man engaged in the deimion- stration could be pointed out he would be pun- ished Ciecerr Coret.—On Saturday, after our re- port closed, the Court, in the two cases of Mi- chal O'Brien cs. the Corporation of Washington, affirmed one of the jadgments of the magistrate and reversed the ether. The case of Charlies H. Brown ts. Andrew Schwartze, was then taken up. This was a case where a replevy was brought by the plaintiff to Tecover a Lorse. It seems that the parties traded horses, and Schwartze considered bimself cheated in the swap, and went to Brown’s stable and re-ex- changed horses, and when the plaintiff went for bis horse refused to give him up; hence the reply. The jury was instructed by the Court as follows : ** That if upon the evidence aforesaid the jury shall believe there was an exchange of personal property agreed on, but no delivery in pursaance of such exchange and in fulfilment of such agree- ment, or that the terms of said exchange were not fully complied with by the plaintitf, or that said piaioti® practised any fraud upon the said defendant, then, and in such case, the plaintiff is not entitled to recover; the fraud, or non-com- pliaace with terms existing, being the bargain, and either party being at liberty to revoke the bargain before delivery ia pursuance and falfil- ment thereof _ The jury were sent out, and the Court ad- journed This morning the Court met, and 7 in the above rave being called, gave a verdict for the plaintiff with one cent damages. The Court took Up first, the case of Statham, Smithson & Co cs. Wm. N Mann—Carrington. Davidye and Magruder for the plaintiffs, Gillett for defence. This is an action brought by the above firm against the defendant, a citizen of Bufo, N. Y.. to recover a large sum of money placed in tbe Lands of Mann by the said firm, as ent, for certain purposes. The defendant de- clines making returns, (after haviog used the money,) aud pleads as an excuse for such refusal that the = placed sn bix hands was issued by a banking house in the District of Columbia, where the laws ef Congress do not recognise basking; he aiso pleads that the laws of New York prohibit the circulation of such money in that State. This case was being arpued by Mr. Magruder in demurrer for the plaintiffs when this report closed. Ellicott, Clag- ett, Newton, May & Co AN Iscipent ror Goteu —About $ o'clock on Saturday evening, the neighborhood of Tweitth and E streets was the scene of a vad spectacle, the actor fn which was a well-dressed young man who dashed furl ously along the streets under the dreadt uence of delirium tremens, and with bis wild, painful eries brought the people all to their de under the impression that a murder was being committed. The unfortunate victim rushed alony. uttering screams, threats and pro- ths, and whoever was in his path either fied on hix approach, of stood to be attacked by him. in passing the new ettice of the “ Union” heWspuper some men were standing i2 the office dvor, and the unfortunate man rushed across the street towards his supposed enemies, who wisely stepped back into the office and closed the door; and so he passed on, and for the dintance of half a mile bts fearful ravings could be beard with distinctness by those who were fullowing with a view to saving him from the commission of some fearful crime—pe: haps self-murder. Yesterday morning, when the case Was tried, Justice Donn fined Hurdie $20 and Costs; upea which Hurdle appealed to the Cir- cut Court. Many persons doubt the authority of the Corporation to enforce any such law. The decision of the Court will settle that question ; Lut in the meantime the law will coutinue to be enforced. Those who have heard Jenny Lind sing “Home, Sweet Home, “Coming through the Rye,”’ and, above all, ‘Auld Robin Gray,” will not soon forget the breathless interest with which they were listened to, and how mach more these songs contributed to her great reputation in Eng- land and America, than even the elaborate Ope- ratic music in Which Jenny Lind was above crit- icism. Those also familiar with Miss Catherine Hayes will recollect that, though that Indy en- os a deservedly high operatic reputation both sim Raly and England, her true fame and popu- larity rested upon ber beautiful and poetic ren- dering of such exquisite ballads as ‘‘The Harp that once thro’ ‘Tara’s Hall,’ “The Minstrel Boy,” and “The Last Rose of Summer.’’ 1 appeal to those who were present last evening that when Miss May, in answer to the encore oi ber last song, came forward and gave the simple air “Home, sweet Home,” she excited move in- terest in the audience, and gained more position as a vocalist than even in her creditable render- ing of that very difficult scena from “Ernani.?? The operatic music, and particularly that of Verdi, taken from its position in the Opera, i vested of its dramatic accessories, and sang in the Concert room, is comparatively uninteresting to the majority of Concert attendants. _ J feel convinced that if Miss May, with her full voice and correct srticulation, was to direct her attention to and {introduce in her programme some of the standard ballads of ber, ds » Scot- land and Ireland, she would speedily acquire a first-class pene and [pak ey agen hb eertain- Jy would be more creditable to her as an Ameri- can vocalist, than being a he veel one; for the many first-class Ttatian Prima Donnas at Present in America, with whom, as an Italian singer, she must eventually be compared, will preclude her from ranking any higher. These remarks, which may possibly be object- ed to by many, | offer in perfect kindness, and from a considernble professional experience in Europe and America. The pepers,! perceive, speak of Miss May as the only American who has xained a musical Teputation in Europe As this completely ig- nores the position of two most meritoriousartistes now enjoying a first-class reputation in London, | feel it my duty to correct them. An American lady, named Miss Lucy Escott, made her first ap- arance in Italian Opera at the Drary Lane heatre, in London, some two years azo, and at once established her claim, before the most eritical audience in the world, to be con- sidered a first-class Priina Donna. Since her first appearance, Miss Escott has sustained the leadiny parts in both Italian and Englis! Opera throughout the principal cities of En; a, and is now acknowledged to be the most graceful and intelligent operatic artiste on the British stage. The other artiste I allude to is Mr. Henri Drayton, a gentleman well known in Washing- ton afew years ago as @ Clerk in one of the De- partments. This gentleman resigned his oftice and went to Europe to — his musical studies. He was the first American who became a pupilof the Conservatoire at Paris. After finishing bis studies at Paris, Mr. Drayton went to London, where he hax for some years back maintained a highly respectable position as 4 Baritone singer, in Opera and the Concert room. Tam, sir, yours, most respectfully, i A Musician. 857. Wasuinc rox, Noy. 13. Savev! Saven!—Mr.J. L Edwards having recetved information from a colored womaa in lis service, that a beautiful and interesting fe- male child some six years of age, was in posses- sion of a family of donb{ful reputation living in Prather's alley, between Foarth and Fifth streets, in the Fourth Ward, he, on Saturday, applied to Otticer Watson who immediately went to the house and took the cblid to the office of Justice Donn. She said she had been brought from Phil- adelphia by her aunt and placed at the house where she was found. The woman Dade, the keeper of the house, be- ing examined, stated that the girl was bro ight to her by a good looking woman dressed in black who represented herself as the aunt of the child, and asked her to take charge of {t until she could make other arrangements for its care. Justice Donn very properly decided not to re- turn the child to the charge of the woman Dade, but placed her in care of Mrs. McPherson, a Di- rectress of the Protestant Orphan Asylum until further enquiries eould be made as to the little girls history. Several persons, who were touched by the for- lorn position of the interesting little girl, offered to provide a home for her, but she will be re- tained for the present in good hands until some- thing further can be ascertained as to her parent- age and history. CounTeRveiT anp ALTERrD Bann NotEs.— Who is there in business who has not, at some time in his experience felt the chagrin and dis- appointment accompanying the discovery of a bad note in his money drawer, taken, perhaps, through that too prevalent practice of relying upon the description given in Bank Note Re porters We opine there are but few in business who have not experienced these unpleasant sep- sations. As a method of real worth and unfi ing principles, we would recommend to the a! tention of the public, Mr. J. 8. Corbin’s system for deteeting aitered and counterfeit notes.
