LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. ‘Tux Ricnmonp Crstom-Hovse Rosse The Richmond Whig of yesterday says entering the custom- v from, was com- meneed Lefore the Hustings Court yesterday An extreordinary epivode cecurred during the progress of the investigation. Officer Boss, of Vashiagton, in his testimony, explanatory of the confession of Somerville, stated that he ap- proached the prisoner. nexr the Powhatan House. while he was in custody of Officer Morriss, ani instead of being repulsed with a frown, as he expected, he was greeted with a smile of recog- nition by the prisoner. They shook hands, walked to the Court-House steps, and witness remarked that they (the officers) had mef with good luek—that Pulling had shown where the money had been secreted, and that some fifteen thousand dollars bad been recovered. Somer- ville then voluntarily said that he had been led into the scrape by Pulling—that it was his first offence, &e., &c. The question was asked by Judge C Pp. prisoner's conmsel: ‘ Did you not say to Somerville in effect, after apprizing him of the recovery of the money, that you knew all, and he had better make a clean breast of it?’ Oilicer Boss emphatically and positively denied having made such a remark, or anything approaching to it *: Officer Morris, of the Richmond police, was thenexamined. He deposed that after the recog- wition between Boss and Somerville, and the re- mark about the tinding of the money, Boss con- tinued the conversation by saying to Somerville that Pulling had informed him that this was the first robbery in which he—Somerville—bad been engaged, that bis (S."s) was sick at Charles- ton, ete., and if it was all true. he, Boss, was ‘Was very sorry for bim. The witness was then poy to detail a further confession niade oy Somerville at the jail, when he was checked by Judge Crump, who objected to the evidence as inadmissible, on the ground that Boss had employed * solicitations’’ to influence the pris- ener, and induce a confession from him He ad- dressed the Court for some time in support of this proposition, and incidentally disclarged an unparalleled volley of tive against officer Boss; at least, it has never been our fortune to beat @ more scathing and merciless excoriation. He charged him with wilful. deliberate, false- sood, im stating that Somerville bad himself dis- closed facts, which were communicated by Boss fo Somereill-, (if Otticer Morris is to be believed.) a= information received by Boss from Pulling. The Court overruled the motion to exclude the further testimony of Officer Morris, and he then completed his deposition, stating nothing in ad- dition to the facts already in possession of our readers The Court then adjourned until i0 o'clock, a. to-day Tue New Hovse Hatt —An extra force of hands are now employed in the new House Hall, in constructing the Speaker’s seat, and the desks of the clerks and reporters, which are being made of Htatian and Tennessee marble, and are of the most exquisite and elaborate workmanship. The hall toor is being carpeted by J. Thompson, up- holsterer. The carpet is of American manufac- ture, and comes from Boston: it ix of appropriate pattern and colors, confor iz to the general character of the room. The gallery seats are being grained, in imitation of mahogany. Spe- cimens of the beautiful bronze railing for the side stairways bave just arrived at the receiver's ottice from Messrs. Underwood and Col. Butler, which were filled with coals in the base- ment and hay in the lofts. They were consumed to the walls before the Columbia Fire Compauy which, ay usual, was on the spot with gr promptness couldarrive. They proceeded, how- ever, lo extinguish the tlames, thereby preventing the fire from communicating to any of the sur- rounding buildings. The origin of the fire ix not known, but it is supposed to be the work of an incendiary. Suspicion attaches to a black cart driver. who is employed by some contractor for street grading, and has had use of the stables for some time past. After the fire had been extin- guished, the members of the Company were in- vited by Capt. Dunnington to his house, where they partook of such hospitalities as ¢he sudden- ness of the cecasion would admit of. The Com- pany then adjourned tothe east Capitol grounds, where some time was spent by them in testing the forcing capacities of their neat little suction nm Cimcvit Covrt.—During yesterday the Court Was engaged as usual in the case of Jonesagainst Dermott. GEORGETOWN AFFATRS. Correspondence of The Star. Grorcetown, Noy. 12, 1857. ‘The Sabbath School Convention, held in the Dumbarton street M. E. Church yesterday, was tolerably well attended—there being about fifty ministers, superintendents, and delegates pres- ent. The Rev Jobn Lanahan, Presi ing Elder of the District (Potomac) resided, and Mr. Waugh acted as sec. i reports from the schools throughout the District showed quite an encouraging state of thin; A number of inter- esting speeches upon the subject of Sabbath Schools were delivered on the occasion; and, af- tera harmonious and interesting session of séve- ral hours, the Convention adjourned, to meet in the Wesley Chapel. Washington, on Friday evening next. We learn that one of the main objects of the Convention is to secure, if possi- ble, afternoon sessions of the schools. We Tegret to say that, for some time past, we have discovered a reckless and lawless spirit manifesting itself among many of the young men, youths and boys, of ourtown. It is far from be- ing an uncommon thing to see many of this class, during the early hours of the night, prowling about the streets—either wholly or party intoxi- eated—rendering night hideous with their vul- garity and disyusting yells. The practice of car- rying deadly weapons is also becoming too com- mon, we think, for the good of society; and the sooner our Corporate authorities take the matter in hand and enact a stringent law for the sup- ression of these serious and growing vices, the better it will be for the community. Against selling intoxicating drinks to minors, we believe there has for many years been stand- ing on the records of the Corporation a prett stringent law; but we incline to the belief that ft has become a dead letter, from the fact that not- withstanding it is repeatedly violated, we have et to hear of the first instance in which the law as been enforced. Those who sell deadly Weapons to either youths or boys, we regard as being more culpable and guilty of a more serious offence against society than the violators of the law before mentioned, and ought to be held toa rigid accountability by every parent and good citizen in the community. Cases have come to our knowledze during the last day or two where the venders of dangetous and deadly weapons have disposed of them to boys ten or twelve years old. Such conduct we regard as perfect outrage- ous, and unless they desist in the future, we un- hesitatingly say thal their names should be given tothe public. “The public should tuke such steps as would compel them to desist from such con- duct in the future, or else scout them from the community WM Which they are sowing the seeds for so many serious evils. We sincerely hope that our corporate authori- ties will take the matter in band, and puta stop to it, by enacting soi such law as they now have iu force in onr sister city, and also one im- posing a heavy penalty upon the venders of tire- aris and other danyerous weapons, for sellins them to minors. Unless something of the kind is speedily done. our town will, we fear, soon become the battle-ground for other rowdy spirits than those we already have among @ il God knows we are tormented wilh too many. tar, already. The laws now in force in Was! ngton will er such spirits from their villany in that oly and we have reason to fear t our streets will besonght as the place, by contending or rival parties, to settle their piques: and animosi- ties, and they may xoou become diszraced by such scenes as frequently of late been en- acted in that city and in other quarters We have been requested to cail the attention of our city authorities to the fact that in one or two places the water flows over the road leading to the Little Falls Bridge, and unless some provi- sion is imade to remedy the matter before cold weather sets in, ice uray fori at these poiuts suf- ficient tocause som? serious accident, and involve our Corporation in heavy damages Artived—packet schooners Embarie, Donoho, Philadelphia, to Hyde & Davidson; Mott Bedell, New York, to Peter Berry; schooner Sontherner, Lefevre, Baltimore, lumber to Libby & Son No change in the flour or grain maikets since our last.
