Subse- quent experience with them has satisfied us of the fact more firmly. A day or two since we weighed them, by the gallon, and find that they cost abont four cents less per pound than good cuts of beef inthe market. Where the house- keeper buys them by the bushel, and has them shucked at home, they cost not more BES, pound than half the average cost of good f. We throw ont the foregoing hints for the benefit of those who would enj»y the good things of this _ and rae canes = ,ast night, we enjoyed a dozen roasted ers at Benter’s, on C street, (in the rear of re baer Hotel,) which, take them all in all, were never sur in New. York. We paid for them with the aapeneapea a pee ay one-thir as much as we have invariably for 0 rs of like size and-flavor in New York—Saddle Rocks. The dozen, uncooked, would have weighed more thana pound. The explanation of the remarkable excellence of the oysters here this season is, that the “‘ bed- ding’’ of the last two or three years for this mar- ket has just come fairly intouse If one doubts the fact, let him pay our old friend Bent +ra visit, for practical proof. He knows how to set an oyster table, toa charm. Tux Cextre Marker opened this morning with but a slim attendance of country dealers. The demand was not very great. Latta & Co., to furnish the city of Washington with a steam fire-engine was com- municated to the Councils last night hy the Mayor. The proposal is to furnish this city with a steam fire-engine of the third class, complete, for the sum of $6,500. The apparatus to be capa- ble of generating steam in tive minutes ; and will throw a stream of water 14 inches in diameter 200 feet horizontally, or two %-inch streams 175 feet. The machine is to be drawn by two horses. The manufacturers agree to keep the whole in order one year. Theysay they can show a great saving oe propesty by their new arrangement in Cineinnat), Ohio, sufficient to support six sach fire departments as they had, besides he gig! Mr the moral influence whic’ naturally arise from the present system. The entire expenses will be from $3,500 to $4,000 per year. Such an engine as they propose will be capable of doing the work of three hand engines. ‘ No mere Guxxixe Exprptrioxs —The bill in relation to deadly weapons, passed by the City Councils and signed by the Mayor, is as follows: An Act to prevent the carrying of dangerous werepone in Washingtowcny. ir Be it enacted, $c., Vhat it shall not bereafter be lawfal for any person or persons to carry or have about their persons any deadly or danger- ous wi ns, such as dagger, pistol, bowieknife, dirk-knife or dirk, colt, slung-shot or brass of other metal knuckles within the city of Wash- ington; and 7, son or persons who shall be duty conyieted of so carrying or having on their persons any such weapon shall forfeit ard ay upon such conviction not less than twenty Fis - lars nor more than fifty dollars; which fin-s shall be prosecuted and recovered in the same manner as other penalties and forfeitures accruing to the city are sued fer and recovered; provided that the police officers, the members of the autiliary guard and the military, when on duty, snali be exempt from such penalties and forfeitures. Tae PRrorosen Bread Law.—Mr. Brown, in the Common Council last night introduced a bill (which was made the speciai order for Monday next) to regulate the weight and the quality of bread. Section 1 requires bread to be sold by weight, each loaf to weigh not less than 16 or more than 18 ounces; and the sales in al! cases to be reck- oned in the United States currency. Section 2 requires ali dealers in bread to kee; legal scales or weights, and to weigh out all bread to their customers on delivery Section 3 juires bread to be composed of the best qumlity of pure sweet superfine flour, free from all adulterating ingredients. Section 4 makes it the duty of the clerks of the markets and of police officers to enforce the law, and provides that bread forfeited under it shall be sent to the alms house. Section 5 designates fines at not less than five or more than ten dollars for violating the law. Unsecassany ALanx“.—Last night, the report of a number of pistols near the Railroad, caused a rumor that a riot had taken place in that vicin- ity. Upon application to the officers, a strong se of whom had been stationed in that neigh- hood, we learned that a company of German Amateur Thespians were performing ina saloon. near that point; and, in the course of one of the pieces, several pistols were fired, which caused the alarm. it was also said that a rictous gang had visited the Second Ward last night, and wereconsulting about a display of their rowdy powers. The best authority assures us tbat no such demonstration was ie. ’ ‘Tue First Cases under the law against carry- ing deadly weapons, came off this morning at the central guard-house. “Two colored men named Smallwood and Brown were arrested for disor- derly and profane language in the streets. When they were taken to the guard-house It was dix- covered that cach wes armed with a pistol, but they being of that class of persous le to pay the heavy penalty of the law, were only fined $2 and costs each. They of course lose the weapons. This prompt enforcement of the law has been bail with the livetiest sat: tion, as giving promise of a better state of things.
