LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Tae Teacuers’ Associatiox.—After our re- port closed Saturday, it was— Resolved, That a convention of the teachers of the District be held on Thursday night, Friday night, and Saturday morning, December 17th, Isth and 19th. That the convention organize with chairman and secretary on Thursday night, and have a lec- ture, with the report of the committee on the city school statistics. That on Friday there be a discussion on the condition and demands of the cause of education in this District from 7 to 1! o'clock a. m.; at I! o'clock a. m.ga lecture; to be followed by a dis- cussion That on Friday might there be a lecture, with a discussion. That on Satnrday, at 9 o’clock a. m., there be a discussion on thé teacher's profession, and on the National Teachers* Association ; at Ll a. m., a lecture, with a discussion. This report was adopted, and the committee continned for farther action. it was stated by members of the committee that arrangements were being made with several dis- waned gentlemen for lectures on the occasion of the convention. Mr. Loomis, from the proper committe, an- nounced that, wt the next regular meeting of the association, the president. Mr O. C. Wight, would read an essay on ‘‘The mutual relations, duties and the obligations of teachers and pa- rents.” On motion, the association adjourned to meet gain on the first Saturday of December. Rowovvism Rampant.—The services of the police are imperatively required about the wharf, at the foot of Seventh street, occupied by the George Page. Not long since we had occasion to record a shooting affair there, and so soon in it is uur duty to all the attention of the city authorities to conduct there equally repre- hensible. On Friday evening last, while the Page was at the wharf waiting for the mail and through passengers, an individual, said to be named T. Thomas, and to be the keeper of a drinking house in the vicinity, was parading in front of the boat's pier, cursing, swearing and threatening to kill the Captain or any one else Lelonging to the boat who should dare to put foot on shore. We learned on the boat that the Captain bad collected fare or toll from three ind!- videaks who were in company with this man. or a previous a in the course of the day, from Alexandria © was evidently intoxicated, and prepared to essay to carry out bis threat had Capt. Price left the boat. It is the imperative duty of the police to bast a sharp look out at that landing, more especially while the boat's last trip continnes to be made after dark; for landing at an out-of-the-way point and being the last steamboat trip made from Al- exandria in the course of the§day, it now rarely happens that the Page fails to bring back to Wash- ington at 7 p. m., more or less drunken and des- perate rowdies returning from annoying our neighbors of Alexandria Tur Porice.—Having been ourselfa witness to the facts set forth in the following communica- tion, we cheerfully add our testimony to that of the unknown writer.—Ep. Lf ee As the — of omission on the part of our police have, for some time t, been most wantonly paraded before the ped ig it be- comes an agreeable duty to record an instance which, coming under our personal observation, more than satisfied us of their promptness and efficiency. We allude to the occasion of the re- turns of the Baltimore election on Wednesday night last. From intimations received during the day, and from the conduct and bearing of some of the characters who composed the crowd assembled at and about the corner of the National Hotel on that night, we were lead to fear a most serious disturbance. We found the police in fuil force, and active, vigilant and determined. The frst symptoms of disorder wese at once sup- pressed,—and suppressed with a promptness and decision which, doubtless, intimidated the row- dies who were eager for a uss.”? Hence it ‘was the night off quietly, and the crowd dispersed without riot or serious disorder. A be of justice prompts me to give this testimonial, and the same feeling will, 1 hope, induce you to give it a place in the Star. witha request that the Charleston Mercury should copy. ashington, Nov. 6, 1857. Be Tar River.—At Harvey & Co.’s wharf arrived schr J. L. Redaor, Capt. Endicott, from Phila- delphia, with 242 tons coal. At Riley's wharf—Arrived schr R. C. Stanard, Captain Groves, from Wilmington, N. C., with 75.000 feet lumber; schr May, Capt Armstrong, from Alexandria, with 80 tons cannel coal; schr Federal Hill, Capt. Craceir Court —The case of Jones vs. Der- Mott still ocenpies the Court. The examination of the witnesses is drawing to a close, to the great joy of all concerned. It is probable that the case will be closed and ready for argument during the present week. This morning, on opening the Court, Mr. Chas Lee Jones, on leave, presented the case of John A. Menekeim es. Wm Downs, a case of an old aceount of some S100 for bread purchased by the defendant from the plaintiff, and for settlement of which action was brought. The jury returned for tue plaintiff for fall amount of account. The case of Jones tt. Dermott was then re- sumed from Saturday, and was progfessing when this report closed Baurat Assavutt—The rowdies appear to have changed their field of operations to the out- skirts of the city, with the expectation of com- mitting their cowardly and brutal acts with im- punity, out of reach of the officers. Yesterda afternoon, a gang of rowdies attacked the dwell- ing of a German family near Pierce’s mill, throw- jug stones and filing pistols into the house. One of the occupants (a German) was wounded in the leg with a bail. Officers Suit, McHenry and Ross, after a long run. came in sight of the gang, who fled as soon as they saw the officers. They kept on the outskirts of the city, and were pur- sued nearly to the heights of Georgetown, but succeeded in eluding their pursuers. ‘Tue Meanest Specimen of RUPPIANISM YET. Yesterday, as a funeral procession was passing on Massachusetts avenue, !n the Northern Liberties, to bury the body of an Irish infaat, the line was attacked and broken by a ganz of rowdiex, and the persons obliged to fly for sufety. Information was sent to the officers as soon as possible; bat before they arrived at the place the rufflans had dispersed, and no one could identify the par- ties engaged in the cowardly attack. Several gentlemen have endeavored to assixt the offl- cers in ascertaining who the scoundrels were, but so far without success Goxe to Jait —James Simms, alias Charles, asailor, who was arrested and sent to the work- house about two weeks ago for disorderly con- duct, was arrested last night by officer Lloyd for two cases of assauit and battery, one of which Was the attack, with a knife and pistol, on young Ferrell, who was so badly wounded on the first ofjune. When be was on his way to jail om- cer Sanderson arrived at the Guard house with anotber warrant against him for a similar attack on a German named Sauns. He was committed to jail ineach case. St. Matwew’s Cuvrcu.—At this church, yer- terday morning, the services were of a peculiar and jnteresting character, it being the occasion of the first appearance of Rev. Father Charles White, the new pastor. The Rev. Father preached to the large congregation present an ex- erllent sermon upon the duties of the Ld to his congregation, and the obligations of the cburch toward the pastor. At this church, yesterday, wax performed a beautifal mass, composed by Prof. Benkert, the conductor of the choir. Money Matters ix Wasuinetox.—Our bro- kers were buying Virginia money at 7 per cent. discount on Saturday, and exchanging Washing- ton City currency for gold at 3 per cent., and ma- ing small exchanges of Virginia money for Wash- ington ut 4 per cent , all of which shows a healthier state of feeling. Virginia money was in great demand, almost beyond the supply. AguesteD —On Saturday night, Joha E. Mo- Tan was arrested in the First Ward, by Watch- man Griffin, on the charge of being concerned in the riot at the Northern Market in which Watch- man Klopfer was shot. He was taken tothe Cen+ tral Guard-house, and commitied by Justice Donn for a further bearing. Beaten —Yesterday,a man named Ward, who is employed at the Cupitol extension, was at- tacked by three persons. near Thirteenth street and the Avenue, and badly beaten—for what, we are not informed. The persons are said to be known to the officers, and means have been taken for their arrest, A Vincinian Vicrinizkp.—On Saturday, a gentleman from Virginia met with a young min of pleasing address, and an acquaintance having somehow sprung up between them, they took a Pe together to the Capitol erecken \; Ae there a well dressed ‘son aj em and exhibited a curiously constructed box, and bees proceeded to try on the old trick of the ‘box game.’’ The Vir, jan gentleman's companion inti- miated to him, in a whisper, that he knew the secret of the box, and proceeded to offer a bet to the owner that he could open it. He offered a draft of $300 as a stake.. This draft the box- holder declined accepting as a stake, and moved ott. The Virginian’s friend then urged him to loan him $20 to bet, ‘it being a dead-sure thing,’ and be would repay him at the hotel. The $20 was forthcoming, staked and (of course) lost. The sharper walked off, the friend, in a great —_ rage, walked after him—and that is the last this fine old Virginia gentleman has seen of the twain. Povicr.—Before Justice Clark.—George Butler wes brougbt up for assanit with an axe, on Wm. Green; held to bail for court. Wm. Delany, drunk and disorderly ; costs and security. Sarah Coates, profanity in the streets; fined $4 ge costs, and committed to the workhouse for ys. Mary Heisier, for selling liquor without li- cense; fined $20 and $1.48 costs Pat Maloy, vagrant; workhouse for recommit- ment to the poor house. Miss JuLiana May.—We have frequently seen among us the musical celebrities of the Old World—from snowy Sweden on the north to sun- ny Italy on the south—but Miss May is, we be lieve, the first Ameri¢an woman who has attained the highest ranks of the lyric art. After an ab- sence of six years from her native home Mi: May will make her first appearance at Carus Saloon on Thursday evening. and we doubt nota very warm greeting awaits her. Berr —At the great cattle markets of the coun- try, the price of beef has declined 1{a2c_ per Ib., during the past week, but ‘ beef eaters’? have reaped no benefit thereby. They are paying about as mach now as they did last summer. We Catt ATTENTION to the fine concert of vocal music announced for the benefit of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. Grorcztown, Nov. 9, 1857. The eighteenth annual meeting of the Female Union Benevolent Society, was held in Bridge street Presbyterian Church. yesterday afternoon. ‘The anoual report of the Society was read by the Rev. H. Suter The report is one of considerable interest not only to the Society, but the commu- nity at large. The author, Miss Hellen L. Stew- art, seems to be perfectly familiar with all the past operations of the Society, and to be ace | alive tothe many difficulties to be encounte: in their labors of love, in the future. She dis- cusses in a masterly style, and in our opinion completely refutes all the objections which have heretofore been put forth against the operations of the Society, by those individuals who are ways ready fo croak, and urge all sorts of flimsy and ridiculous objections whenever an appeal, no matter how touching, is made to them in behalf of the poor. The report states that the Society diily realizes the necessity of a House of Refuge, especially for boys, and a home of employment for friendless young females, when out of einployment, and particularly for the aged, helpless, and totally destitute, and widows and orphans. The state of their treasury has, however, never permitted them even to think of procuring such desirable asylums, having never been sufficient to enable them to do more than meet the many and press- ing wants of those who are mainly dependent upon them for sustenance during the more in- lement seasons of the year. It also states that the ‘'rustees of the Poor could aid the Society greatly by removing the dissipated and intem- perate to the work or alms house. This portion of the report closes with the following language: “The Society, though mead | with difficulties atevery step, and My pipers ing from the pres- sure of the times an increase of their beneficiaries the coming winter, have resolutely determined not to relinquish their united action, remember- ing that ‘in union there is strength,’ and prompted by the animating motto ‘never give up the ship,” they have ayain launched their little bark, newly freighted with kind feelings, once more upon the waters of life, christened anew by the tears of sympathy, the ‘Speedwell,? and with the heart.cheering motto ‘ God bless you’ inseribed upoa their banner, and her sails filled by the breezes of cheerful co-operation, they fear not the ebbing or flowing of the tide nell giao opinion. Bat with faith as her pilot, and hope and dut her oarsmen, she will still glide onward wit the current. We shall gladly welcome every little rill of love that may flow into and swelf our treasury, thus enabling us to enlarge the operations of our benevolence, reviving and enriching, as we move onward in the course of duty, many desolate and cheerless scenes in nature by dropping here and there, wherever the soil of the human heart may be found prepared for their reception, the seeds of divine truth, end thus save many of God's poor, abject and tempest-tosxed little ones from sinking beneath the bitter waves of adversity and dispair In cousequence of there being no regular report of the operations of the society made last year, its receipts and expenditures for the two years are embraced in this repert, and are as follows : Amount of receipts from November, 1555, to N vember, 1956, * expended during the same period, 8659 balance in the treasury, to meet the demands overmber and Decem- her, before the collec! ‘or the next year came in, $6 Receipts from November, 1856, to November, 1557, $724.49; expended, S591. (s— leaving at the closeof theyear ending November 1, 1567, SIS3.4L. The foregoing does not include the Corcoran fund for wood—it being $300 annually since Feb- ruary, IS5l—and which is not placed at the dis- posal of the Society until December of each year. The report also contains the following liberal do- nations, which the Society have heretofore re- ceived: 1555, Ben Perley Puore’s lecture, $23 4 from Mgt aie $150. 1856, Mrs. Pairo Mr. Bentley, Masonic Lodgo, $20; Christ Joh $56 53, Presbyterian, ro. $21; Mrs. Bentley, S. English, Mrs. Barnard, $6; Mrs Pairo’s Concert. 0; Mr. Brown $3.— Making a sui total of receipts for the two years’, including the Corceran fund, of $1,631.65. After the reading of the report the Society and large congregation were eloquently addressed by the Rev. Dr. Bocock. A convention composed of the superintendents, the ministers actively engaged in the Sabbath schools, and two delegates from each Methodist school inthe Potomac district of the Baltimore Conference. will be held in the Dumbarton street Methodist Church on Wednesday morning next, at 10 o'clock.
