Last night a covey of them was taken and ged in the gaard-house, and this morning they had some troubleto obtain the money for the fines and costs imposed by Justice Donn. They will find disturLing meetings very costly sport. Contempt oF a MacistRate —This morning, acase was laid before Justice Donn, in which Patrick 8. Curry was the complainant against a colored servant at Browns’ Hozel, who was charged with threatening him. The evidence was heard and the colored boy dismissed. Curry, not pleased with the decision, launched out ie an oration full of contempt. The Justice, not being able to stop the speech, committed Curry to jail for twenty-four hours, with the hope that in the meantime he would cool down AccIDENT.—Yesterday afternoon, a scaffuld upon which several workinen were engaged at the General Post Office extension gave way and precipitated the workmen to the floor; fortunately hone were dangerously wounded. One of them, a German, was bradly bruised, and several of his teeth Knocked out. He wastakento Mr. Shafer’s hair dvessing saloon, on E street, from whence he was removed to his home. The workmen regard their escape as providential. Gas.—Some complaints have reached us of the bad smell from the gas of late, and on inquiry we lind the cause to have been the want of water for making the gas. About the last of October the wind blew all the water ont of the canal, and for thirty-six hours no water could be had, and of course impure gas was the consequence. There is an abundance of water now, and in a few days all will go on right again. Birzcn’s Mixstrets—their last appearance— perform to-night for the benefit of the Herndon fund ; a fitting tribute to the noble master of the Central America is this offered by Mr. Bireh, who as one of the passengers on that ill-fated ves- sel could best sppreciate the heroism of that la- menged commander. The minstrels perform their choicest pieces to-night, and we cannot doubt that the Saloon (Carusi’s) will be crowded. Correspondence of The Star. - Grorcrrown, Nov. 7, 1857. The arrivals of boats upon our canal coutinue to show a gradual falling off in trade upon the line The entire work, we learn, never was in better condition, and the only reason that-can be as- signed for the falling off in the general trade is the deranged state of the finances of the country. The work of imprevement upon dams numbers four and five still continue to be Prosecuted as vigorously as circumstances will permit. During the week ending to-day 51 boats in all have ar- Tived, 35 of them from Cumberland with coal, 5 with flour and grain, and the remainder from dif- ferent points, with wood, lime, stone, &c. The teceipts for tolls at the Georgetown Collector's office for the same period will amount to about $2,800. The petition of over one hundred and fifty owners and captains of boats to the Board of Di- Tectors, to prohibit boats from running upon the canal onthe Sabbath day, was laid before the Board at their meeting yesterday, but in conse- quence of there not being a full Board in attend- ance the petition was laid over. No proposition from the coal miners for an allowance of four months time upon tolls for coal was brought be- fore the Board. We are pleased to see that the Vigilant Fire Company has procured new buckets for the hook and ladder department of the company. Recent events have proved that this is a very important Portion of the tire apparatus ; and as the company are now soliciting from our citizens the means necessary to pay for the new buckets, we ho) that their collector, Mr. James Rawlings, will liberally responded to. We have rarely, if ever, seen a more dense fog than covered the face of nature this morning. For several hours it was impossible to discover objects a hundred yards off. We would advise those in want of a real prime article in the way of Irish potatoes to call at once on Mr. Peter Berry, Water street—here they can find the real simon pures, sweet and meally; those in want of prime flour will find the article, of a quality to suit the most fastidious taste, at Mr. B. Darby’s; and the ladies, one and all, young and old, we would advise to examine the advertisements of Mrs. A. Wollard and Miss Mc- Donald. The offerings of beef cattle at Drovers’ Rest and Fossett's yards, yesterday, umounted to some 500 head, about 450 of which were purchased by District butchers at $3.12a3.75 on the Loof, equal to $6.25a7.50 net; the remainder were driven to Baltimore.
