Barone Jestice Watxer.—Charles Gant, colored, was brought up om the charge of George Seidenspinner, shoemaker, of having broken open his shop, and abstracted therefrom four pairs of boots 2nd one pair of «hoes, all of them new. onthe night of the 2ist alt. It appeared thet the man Gant had stolen, among the others, a pair of boots which had been made fora gen- teman with a short leg—the beel being length- ened so as to make the head even; this pair of boots Gant sold to another colored man, and he teok them to a shoemaker to have the long beet shortened: and the shoemaker, on seeing them, tecounised the work of Seidenspinner, and de- tained them in his possession until be could send for the owner, whe, being shown the boots, rec- ised his own property; and, on making in- quiry of the colacd oan, the theft was traced to Gant. Justice Walker—at the request of the ac- cused. who stated that be could prove that a man who lived in his house was the one who robbed Seidenspinuer’s shop—committed him to jail for a farther hearing John Wirtenberger came to complain of + McGran, a messenger in the State Depart- ment, whom he charged with extorting from him a fee of $10, for services which were not rendered. A warrant was issued, and Mr. Mc- Gran was arrested aud brought before J Walker for a hearing. The evidence was lows: Mr. John Wirtenberger came to Wesh- ington, some time azo, to obtain a warrant for 0 acres of land. Not being very well posted as to the modus operandi. be consnited some per- son with whom be fell in, as to how he should manage, and was recommended to Jas. McGran ts the man to do his business. He accordingly went to the State Department and found McGran, w agreed, for the sum of 310, to do the job for m. The two went to a magistrate to have a laration drawn up, and the magistrate on arning of the agreement informed Wirtenber- uer that that sum was preci-ely twice as muchas Was nécessaeeto pay for obtaining the warrant Wirtenberger did not, however, object to tLe amount of the fee, because he was anxious toget his warrant and yo home. Mr. Walker was pilof Etty, the celebrated English artist, and as the writer of this happens to know, was very highly esteemed as an artist and as a man in his native land. Since hi- arri- val in this country, he bas practised his profes- sion assiduously, and has yet found time to de- vote to experimenting in various branches of his art, one result of which has been the perfection to which he has brought photography, as evi- denced in these remarkable full-sizea specimens. We may add that a sitting of a few minutes suf. fiees for the portrait, and it can be worked up af- terwards by the artist, who, throngh his expe- rience and jndyment is qualitied to ‘ing out all those points of expression which the eamera sumetimes fails to elicit. A Victim —An elderly gentleman named Thos. Goddard, formerly of this city. but now of Balti- more, bas been in the city ona visit to his friends. He had not been lorg in town before he was robbed of a watch and chain, at the railroad depot. Yesterday, being a little in liquor, he was again robbed. of a lot of jewelry and what money he had with him, by a colored man named Sain Ford, when near the corner of Four-and-a-half sireet and Maryland avenue. The officers have been in pursuit of Ford, but he is not yet taken.
