a LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Beat Hicaman tx a New Yora Court —The New York correspondent of the Philadelphia Mercury has the following in regard fo our dis- tinguished financier, Bean Hickman, Esq on visited New York lately to regulate monetary af- fairs in that quarter: A rich scene came off the other day in the Ma- rine Couct. Your readers will all remember the celebrated Beau Bickwas. Santee! yee ing here for some weeks past, al Hotel. where his bills are paid by his friends in the gambling and sporting lines. On Thursday, Beau was si naed as @ witness in the above court. The attorney on the opposite side was a yegular tartar. He prides bimeelf upon his skill in examining . and claims that he can confuse a witness more successfully than any other member of the bar. One of bis methods of. doing this is, when the witness hesitates, to snap at him like an a terrier, worcy apd abuse him for bis hesitation, and then seek to confound and embarrass him. ‘Before this man Bean was brought up for cross- rexamination. Bean took the stand, and, after giving his testimony in a very mild and timid manner, was handed over for cross-questioning to this keen set lawyer. He bad, in his direct testimony, affirmed that the sharp lawyer's client had ‘*no money whatever.’ The counsellor, with a look at Heau such as a hungry dog gives at a bone, asked : “How do yon know, Mr. Hickman, that my client had no money? Are you the keeper of his ** He told me so, sir.’’ *« When did he tell you so ?”* “ This morning.” “ Where, sir?” “In this very room.”* “What did he say, sir? Come, give us his very words—none of your inferences, sir."* “* F don’t like to answer that question.”? “Ho, ho! So you're afraid to answer that ques- tion are you? [ knew I should drive you into a close corner. Come, out with it, and none of your shirking here.*’ “I should rather be excused .’* ‘Phen [ shall appeal to the court to commit you for contempt.”” “Well, sir, if | must answer, he told me this morning that he bad no money.’* “Well, sir, what language did he use ?*” “Why, I asked him to loan me half a dollar, and he said he conldn’t, for you had robbed him of every cent of his money, and if he didn’t get out of your clutches very soon his children would starve’? The lawyer had no further questions to ask. A roar of lanzhter arose in the Court which re swired some trouble to check, and by the time the law- yer had collected his thoughts again the case was decided against him Taeasery Extsxsion.—The west wing ad- vances steadily. The area walls are nearly up, and the basement walls are being arched in; the main walls are also begun, and considerable pro- Hress has been made on them. The work is heavy and of unquestionable durability. Crowds of persons are to be seen every day, eager specta- torsof the gigantic operations going on about the south front—an inclined plane of sixteen feet elevation and some one hundred and thirty-six feet in length, bas been erected to be used for drawing up the granite pilasters, which are to form the facing between the windows of the sec- ond and third stories; by this arrangement the heavy stones, which are lifted from the wagons to the planes by means of purchase screws work- ed by aa, are drawn up to the required posi- tion on the basement ‘wall im the space of four minutes by steam process. This process, done by hand labor, would require something like two days to cach pilaster. he work thus fasilitated is carried on with great regularity and ease. The second and third stories of the east angle of the south front are expected to be completed before the working season clases. Geowrorn axp ms Brotren Artists —One of the most attractive features of the National Me- trépolis is the studio on Capitol Hill, where a number of sculptors are engaged in making mar- ble copies of the plaster designs prepared by Crawford, in Rome, for statuary to embellish the new Capitol. Yesterday, on — of the news of the death of Crawford, the studio closed, and appro- priately draped in crape, and the artists engazed therein joined in expressions of sorrw for the loss ef one who stoed so high in their ranks as aman, 2s well as professionally. One of them, Thomas Gazliardi, came from Crawford’s studio in Rome, and he is eloquent in praise of the deceased, who, he says. was always most kind and considerate to his fellow workmen, was indefatizable, early and late, in bis profession, and who, during hix twenty-three years stay in Rome, bad particular- ty endeared himself to the inhabitants by his qualities of heart and mind. At Taz Suitnsoxian INstitTvTIoN, -arpen- ters, under the directio: of the Messrs. baldwin, are putting up cases of very pretty design to con- tain the articles of the National Museum which are to he there displayed in the large hall. This hall furnishes ample facilities in point cf dimen- sions and design for the exhibition of the exten- sive Government collection. The cases are to be two stories high, and ar-anzed along each side of the great hall through its entire extent in a man- her to give a fine effect to the articles to be dis- i ‘The library of the Smithsonian Institation has beea ciosed for some weeks to give the carpen- tersachance to make extensive alterations and 2dditions to the book-cases. Many new cases are to be put up, and various internal improvements and embellishments to be exectted, which will ES the library rooms quite a fresh and pleasant oo) Storey Horse Recoverrp.—Last night, a colored man who professed to come from the ty of Bladensburg, carried a norse to the tof Land Third streets, and offered to sell M Mr. O'Brien suspected P. O'Brien right, and proposed to take the horse n could return this evening for the ineney, to which he agreed, the price being sev- enty-fve dollars. Inquiry having been made relative to the horse, it was identified as the _ of Mr. Sepper, of Maryland, and had been stolen. Itis hardly probable that the eol- ored man will return for his pay, and it is believed that he is a runaway, and was trying to raixe money by the sale of the horse to carry him to some of the Northern States. Paneer > his morning, two young girls were placed in the dock at the guard-house for trial. It was their first appearance, but the nature of their offence was such that the sitting magistrate determined to commit them to the workLouse for sixty days. One of them gave her age 2s fourteen years, and the other fifte-u. ‘They had been guilty during the uight of drunkenness, riot, profanity and indeceney, and could not con- trol their tongues even in the cetis. Their youth exculed sympathy, and the question was frequent- ly asked, ** Can not girls of such tender years be saved from destruction ?”* Crrce:t Covnt—The case of Z. Since the first pict, the Court on Monday, the 19th instant, there have been naturalized nine- teen persons of foreign birth; of whom nine were from Ireland, seven from Germany, two from Italy, and one from France. Disuisseo.—Last night, Arthur McLeish, who was charged with forcibly entering the room of Mr. David Reed sometime since, went to the office of Justice Donn and answered to the charge. Mr. Reed was sent for, and after being sworn, stated that McLeish was not theman. Le was accordingly dismissed Tus River.—At Riley’s wharf arrived, from Alexandria, schr. Be was seem throwing the stone by Officer Riley, who in- formed him that ‘that would do,” and that he might new go to his cell. Cross made some show of resistance, which created the necessity of Ri- ley’s drawing his pe and compelling him to return to his cell at its point. Cross is awaiting the action of the Circuit Court on an a lof his attorney, Mr. Chilton, for a new trial. If this appeal is entertained by that Court, he will stand one more chance of getting free from the long term of retirement which has been assigned to him by Judge Crawford; if not, he will con- veyed to the Penitentiary as soon as the present term of the Circuit Court is over Tue Weatner.—Range of the thermometer trom Thursday noon, Oct. 22, tothis morning > Morning. Oct. 29, 1887. Grotezrown. Two well dressed females, whose names we deem it prudent to suppress, residing jn Fairfax conaty, Va., were yesterday arrested in our city by the: police, charged with stealing several shawls from Mr. John H. Smoot, and a piece of calico from Mr. Nathan Siash. They were taken Justice Reaver, when the were identified by the before mentioned gentle- men. The parties manifested great contrition at the false step they bad made, each of them wept bitterly, which aronsed the sympathy of the “ tlemen and the by-standers to such an extent that a general pleading for their release soon hag the t to soften the heart of the stern Justice also, and the guilty parties were allowed to. return to their homes. We are isforped Use they are comparatively easy in nt worldly circum- stances and oo wreopeael oounceted We would admonish them to let the very narrow es cape they made Mahabeny Fe it was only the earnest pleading of several of our fellow-citizens that saved them from a prison cell—serve them ‘as a caution in the future against yielding tosnch temptation . Several very important street Improvements have been going on in the north aud northwest- ern portions of our city during the past season Among the most important is that new in prog- Tess on Congress street near the Seminary.— ‘There the grade has been lowered some ten to fifteen feet, which renders the ascent to the Sem- inary gate much easier. Senator Bright, who owns the handsome property on the east side of the improvement, is also greatly improving his premises by the erection of a substantial stone wall, to protect the embankment from falling, and the laying down of a brick footway for the accommodation of pedestrians. The difficulty of making change among retail- ers is daily becoming greater; and we fear that, unless some arrangement is soon made to relieve them of the difficnity, in acd at least, that the people peneially will eventually be tempted to adopt the same very objectionable course which our neighbors of Alexandria have. Would it not relieve the difficulty some for all classes of deal- ers to receive in trade gold and silver coin—ex- cept quarters, ten, and five-cent pieces—at what- ever arnount of premium they will command in Paper at thecounter of a broker; and all paper currency at a corresponding rate of discount, and pay out at the same rates? This would certainly tend to remove the temptation out of the way of those who have the hard vine to sell it to the brokers; and thus, we think. a larger amount would at all times be leg 42 in cireulation, and no one would be the loser by such an arrangement As it is, we are satisfied that the publie at large have, as a general thing, to pay from five to ten r cent. more profit on the necessaries of life Sr they would did not the present difficulty exist. Our wharves are beginning to be pretty well supplied with those delicious winter luxuries— oysters. As a general thing they are unusually fine. We saw some last night, from the White- House Hotel, that we think go a little abead, in point of size and fatness, of anything in the way of bivalves we ever did see.
