LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. “Tae Brave Desgmve THe Farm.”—On Sun- day night last, asa party of young men, who live on the Island, but do their courting in the city, were returning to their several homes together— the hour being late—they discovered, after ssing over one of the canal bridges, a party of four suspicious looking men a short distance ahead, who, on seeing them, drew up on one side and waited. The young men also stop “ and, happening tc be armed with revolvers, drew them, ready for action. The mysterious looking imaginary ‘Plugs’? soon started on, walking slowly, and occasionally halting; an example which was strictly followed by the young men. U pon arriving at the first cross street, the young xtntlemen, thinking to avoid their supposed en- emies, turned off; and passing up some distance came out at an alley on the opposite side of the square, where, to their consternation, the four mysterious personages were standing on the pave- ment, waiting for them to come out. The young men thought of their -‘gals,"* of the late parting kisses which had been exchanged, of the delici- ous small talk usual to young ‘lovyers,” < with desperate resolve, cocked their pistols, and clabbed their loaded walking sticks. The san- guinary-looking night walkers stood for a few moments, and then moved off a few , when the young men rushed out, and fell into thearms of four vigilant members of the Auxiliary Guard, whe were looking out for disorderly persons. The recognition was mutual and satisfactory, and each party went their way rejoicing Tux River —At Galt & Young's wharf ar- rived schr. Thos. C. Acton, Capt. Baker, from Sangerties, with 120 tons flag and gutter stones for N. Acker, and curbstone for Stuart. On board the mail boat last night quite a mis- cellaneous crowd of passengers was congregated. Capt. Charles Mitchell states that out of some ninety-five passengers who were on board, about fity were thieves, camblers and prostitutes, the offscour of Fish Market Space, Baltimore Seeing the description of company there. Capt. M. warned the passengers to be on their guard, first Jockin up every thing of value about his own person. During the evening, as he was standing on the forward deck, he felt a hand in bis coat pocket. He kept quiet until the hand had gone in so far ax not to be instantly extracted, and then turning suddenly around, he manag to give the pocket investigator a sharp dig in the Tibs, which sent him sprawling on the deck some yards distant. Upon looking ut him closely, he discovered him to be a man upwards of fifty years old. Capt. M. instantly spoke in a loud tone warning the passengers to be on their guard for pickpockets. when a man spoke up saying that he bad better wait until some one’s pocket was picked before he cried. Capt M instantly threatened to have the individnal arrested on suspicion, when the fellow sinnk away into the crowd and was seen no more. These Jail birds will no doubt have a jolly time at the fair in Richmond now being ‘held. It would be well for the anthorities at Richmond to be on the look out for them as soon after their arrival as possible. Disorperty NeGrors.—Last night, about 9 o'clock, two colored men, apparently intoxicated went to the house of Mr. Wm Donophan, corner of Ninth and F streets, Island, and tearing off some of the wooden pailings from the fence, en- tered the yard and knocked at the door. Mrs. D. was at home and alone at the time, and came to the door, when one of them drew back and struck at her with a cudgel, inflicting a deep in- dentation on the door, which she had barely time to close, to avoid receiving the blow upon ber person. They then told her to send her G—d d—d son of a b—h of a husband ont, that they bad a load for him which they would give him Soon afterwards they went away. Shortly after the above occurrence two darkies. Supposed to be the same persons, attacked the house of Mr. John Brown, stoning the windows an@-doing other damage. Mr. B. went to the door, and on opening it, was met by oue of the patt, with a drawn pistol, who threatene@®to eboot him. A rumor is afloat that these parties were white men, in disguise. Messrs. Watt & Streraexs may congratulate themselves upon having some ten thousand fast friends in this city, as at least that number of persons—judging from the steady rush from 7 to 11 p. m.—must have called to pay their Tespects last night. The visitors entered from the Avenue, and having promenaded through the handsome and brilliantly illuminated rooms to the music of the Marine Band, ha! Z at the ref.eshment tables, of course, to sample the superbly concocted Ro- man Punch, the whisky ditto, and the aecompa- nying edibles, and then ‘-rotated” out by the basement exit, to make room for other znd fresh arrivals it was a grand affair all around, and with such an auspicious opening this youag aud active firm may look forward toa prosperous business career. We have been requested by the President of the Vigilant Fire Company to say to all the orderly- disposed firemen of Washington that theirser- vices will at all times be thankfully received, Whenever occasion shall require them inourcity. We are pleased to see this state of fraternal feel- ing existing between the fire companies of Wasb- ington and those of our city. U many occa sions the firemen of Wash m have rendered — service to onr citizens, by their timely aid uring fires; and weare sa that we but echo the sentiments of all our citizens, when we say that we should regret, exceedingly, to see any- thing occur to deprive us of thelr-belp in times of danger, We have used the term ‘orderly dis- x. in no offensive sense. We are pleased to ble to say that hithertoall the companies that have visited our city in times of fire have con- ducted themselves, asa general thing, ina praise- worthy manner; that our town has been exempt from all such disgraceful exbibitions as firemen’s riots; and we sincerely hope, for the sake of the reputation of the firemen themselves, that one never will disgrace our streets. Mr. N Watts, residing on N street, between 19th and 20th streets, Washington, raised the last season several pumpkins—one of which, we think, would be hard to beat in all Yankeedom and Pompkindom to help it—its girth is six feet three inches one way ai two feet one inch the other, and weighs 130 lbs.
