Thompson, coal for Charlestown The surveying schooner Crawford left her moor- ings yesterday, and sailed fur James river. Cinctrr Coret.—The Court on Satuday sus- tained the decision of the magistrate who fined Charles Werner for an evasion of the law prohib- iting the sale of liquor on Sunday, by having a box in which the pay for the liquor was deposit- ed instead of at the connter. Tn the case of Humphries & Juenemann the Court has decided iu effect that lager bier is not an intoxicating liquor, and the mavistrate’s de- cisions flaing the sale of the same were re- versed. On Saturday otlicer Keese was to have answered the call of the Court to show cause why he should not be dismissed from oftice for demanding pay for doing his duty, but at the reqnest of Keese’s counsel the Court postponed the time of the an- swer to Saturday next At the Court to-day the jury trials commence. The first case on the dockei is that of Z. Jones vs. Ann Dermoit, a case that has been pending since the year 1551. when the plaintiff brings suit te recover $20.000 balance due for building the Dexter Hotel. Kobert J. Brent, Esq., of Bal- timore, is engaged in this case for the defence, assisted by Charles Lee Jones, Esq. He arrived at the Court this morning, and the case will be the first one taken up to-day. Me. How Leppy writes to ns to say that the report that he was axsaulted on Four-and-a-half street bridge, on Monday last, by rowdies is in- correct. Mr. Daniel Rowland also, in his card og Satxrday saat, pot an effectual quietus’ to the story which was in circulation from one end of the city to the otber, that ladies of his family Were jasuited at the same time and place; and yet the persons who professed to have been eye-wit- nesses Of these scenes are among the most respec- fable of our citizens. We have no manner of doubt that many of the kindred ‘bugaboo stories’? to the discredit of now in circulation, wonld, if sifted, be ¥ reduced in point of fact. That there was a rowdy set of fellows hanging about that bridge on Monday is doubtless true; but that they committed aii the disgraceful acts set down to them, we are happy to say for eredit of Wash- ington, is disproved. The testi- mony showed that Elizabeth Miller was not near attbe time the robbery was committed, and that Margaiet Russel! was standing at Phillips's head when Kate Rose (now in jail) was in the act of searching his pockets.
