Wasts to ort Maznizp.—Aa attempt to get married, under difficulties, came off in the Sixth ‘Ward a few days ago, and created quite an ex- ‘citement among the Navy-Yarders, who were up Yo the fun. Charley Carrigan came home froma long sea-voyage on one of Uacie Sam’s ships-of- the-line, with bis pay in bis pocket in yel- low gold coin. and with the strongest kind of a hankering efter a wife. He skarried about the avy-Yard itt, watil he found a very bright lookiag “biue-e: Mary,”’ to whom he pa’ prema py Rebar oe aera ~pace of time; and, thinking he bd “mark,” he set ‘out to secure the services of the “Squire, and have the ceremony did, and all over. ia his perambulations be came across the office of Justice Cull, to whom he made application to perform the requisite mysteries which should unite bim for life to the darling of his soul. The — nothing loth, acceded to Charley's prop- sition ‘a the mean time, Charley, thinking it best to thave the lady understand that he was coming, cugaged the services of Messrs. Little and Ver- million, county officers, for a proj stipulation of one of the $5 pieces. to go to the lady’s house, Yaform her that be was about to fulfil his promise to marry her, and to prepare her for the ceremony. This service was promptly undertaken by t obliging officers, who, proceeding at once to the house of the ladye-love of Mr. Carrigan, ti knocked, were admitted, made known their busi- ness to the fair damsel, and were very much as- tonished to learn from her that she had never promised to marry the man; she was equally as- tonished at his audacity in saying #0, Te- quested the advance guard to beat a retreat and — the ex-marine that he was a fool for his as. Just at this time Charley came in, and the in- dignant Miss left by aside door. Charley was informed of the bad success of bis emissaries, and became indignant and lachrymose in the same instant. He bewailed and scolded, protested and blubbered, cursed his unlucky stars and the Whole female sex, swore, stamped, raved, pitched, hinted at suicide, then at muider, became as blue iu the face as he was in the pantaloons, and urged most vehemently that the false-hearted creature had deceived him, and deserted him without any pretext whatever, and calling her back into the room, became imperative and then suplica- tive, threatened and implored, and all to no pur- pose, the young lady merely looking on coolly, and saying at half minute intervals, “1 never Promixed to marry you; go along with you.”* * But,” insisted Charley, didn’t | tell ye that I'd make over to ye all my property in the old country? All me fine estate in Ballyshannon, and me a in lnskillin; besides the forty thousand pounds in the two and a half per cents, and then if ye didu’t like me fora bus- band, didn’t [ say that I'd list again in two months and go off ahd niver come back any mare @uain at all, at ail,and all along of yer promise to be made Mrs. Carrigan? O, ye crue -hearted, desaving woman, how could ye disappoint me heart's tenderest hopes, and break it all to pieces entirely wid yer desavin ways.’ Pending all this the magistrate and his aids Jooked on in silent admiration of Charley's per- suasive efforts to bring Mary up to the sticking fat, and in silent commisseration of b's failure. towever, Mary continued inexorable, and there Temained now nothing for the “man of war’! to do but strike his colors. which he at length did, ig a state of frenzy positively fearful to behold. He declared that he must and would be married, aod if Mary wouldn't come up to her compact he would go and hs to find some lass more willing to exchange her liberty for golden slavery, and a fine prospect of bewitched widuwhood in the fu- hure. Charley deserves to succeed certainly, for his a in this case would insure him marked mors in almost any cause. Tas Youre Max's Cuursrian Association held their regular monthly meeting on Monday evening last. An address was delivered by the Rev. Mr. Balch, of Virginia. It was decided to ee suitable marble monument jn the lot be- jonging to the association, in Glenwood Ceme. tery; an incription isto be placed on the monn- ment relative to Richard L. twood ,who was formerly an active and efficient member of the association. It was stated that the lib: of the association would be placed in suitable glass cases in the reading room; there are now about 2,000 volumes in the library. The finances are in condition. Every Saturday evening there is to be a social circle at the rooms, to which the members and all young men are invited. On Saturday after- ae? o'clock, the Bible Class will be re- an - ‘t was voted to select Charleston, 8 C., as the place, and May, 1858, as the time, for the next an- nnal convention of the American associations. The choive of place has to be determined bya vote of all the associations. A Pas ALARM —Monday night, the Guards on the beat near Four-and-a-half street (canal) bridge heard some one calling vociferously for ‘George :’’ and supposing that something wrong was transpiring the Guards ran to the shouter, who proved to bea young man very badly scared, who said that he encountered six men on the bridge, one of whom as he passed remarked, ‘1 suppose you will treat before you leave.” The oung man thought the remark was addressed to bimecit, and that he ame aes into bad company. Accordingly he ‘ hollered’’ for his companion. The Guards hunted =P the crowd, and then it turned out that the Chief of Police had ordered six of his men to conceal themselves near the bridge to detect and arrest the disorderly persons of whom complaint had been made as infesting that vicinity. The police were about separating as the young man passed, and one of them made the remark jocularly to his companion, which caused the alarm. Tue Government Water Pipes. — This morning, about two o'clock, two young men were arrested by officers Donnelly and Horner, for dig- ging the street near the corner of Seventh and G streets, for the purpose of tapping the water Pipes leading tol the Patent Olle = Many will Temember what pains were taken by Commis- sioner Easby to cut off such communications, made by tapping the pipe, when he had charge of the public buildings, and Commissioner Blake also cut off a communication of the same sort Many are of opinion that no penalty can be fas- tened upon the perpetrators of these deeds; but the act approved May 24, 1853, section 7, refers to this very peint; and the act approved June 3, 1853, refers to the offence of digging ditches in the streets. The young men, whose names were Hening and Courtenay, were held to security for a farther hearing by Justice Donn. They are plumbers, and executed the work by order of other parties without being aware that, in so doing, they were acting illegally. Circuit Covrrt —The Court yesterday was en- gaged all day upon the calling of the trial docket of the term. One thousand cases were called du- ring the day, of which about four hundred were placed upon the State docket. Ina Leer jes of the others judgments were rendered, the re- mainder were entered for court To-day, the Court met at 10 o'clock, and re- sumed the business which had occupied them on yesterday, upon which they were engaged when this report closed. They will pouey et through with the docket to-day, and be ready for the regular trial business of the term by to-mor- row. Broutat.—On Monday night, a crowd of dis- orderly persons attacked Mr. Whaley, omnibus driver, at the foot of the Capitol, and beat bim most unmercifully. Mr. Whaley is well known to the citizens of Washington, and is as peacea- ble a man as can be found in the city. The at- tack upon him was made without the least prov- ocation; and Le was so badly beaten abont the head and fare that his most intimate friends, could they see him now, would fail to recognise him Marriages at Browxs’.—Yesterday morning, a happy couple from Virginia, were united in the holy bands of wedlock by the Rev. AUCTIONSALES |S Correopondence of The Star. By JAS. C, McGUIRB, Avononeer, Gozoxtrown, Oct. 91, 1867. ABLE B ING TS ONE The deleterious effects of the state of Wa effairs of the country, js already Deginning to appear upon our canal. The trade in coal, in consequence of the miners Tefusing to ship upon any other than the cash system, is al- ready beginning to reduce the quantity coming in, and unless some change for the better shall very soon occur, the trade upon the canal for the remainder of the season will be very limited in- deed. This, together with the very general hold- ing back of byt e owners of flour and other heavy commodities, must necessarily tend to reduce the tolls to a very small sum compared to what was anticipated before the general derangement in fi- nancial affairs occurred’ The Borden Coal Company, located in our city, are doing comparatively nothing. They have determined to fill only cash orders. Their inten- tion is to fill their wharves with coal, and fill such orders as may from time to time come in. This is truly a lamentable state of affairs, from the fact that it has just upon the very eve of win- ter thrown out of employment some twenty odd industrious laborers, who have heretofore been constantly Say Sn ae at this company’s docks, at good wages. This company alone paid out every ‘week some four to five hundred doliars for labor, all of which went into the ‘kets of our retail dealers, the loss of which will doubtless be se- riously felt by many, to say nothing of the want which will doubtless fall upon those who have been heretofore its recipients and distributors. At Ray’s docks, they are not doing one-fourth the business their extensive facilities would en- able them todo under other circumstances. If these are some of the results of banks and their operations, we hope that the Good Lord, or the wisdom of the people (gathered from experience) will ere long institute some means by w| ‘ich they will be compelled to mend their ways. This is really a winter morning in point of cool- ness. Ice, nearly half an inch t ick, was visible at an early hour in mnny places. The wind yesterday demolished a number of our lamps, leaving the uncovered posts in the condition of a pump without a bandle—neither fit for use nor ornament. They were pretty ten- ay put together, we should judge, to be thus easily demolished. ‘The prospect of a short supply of fuel the en- suing winter, and the ditficnlty of obtaining an- thracite coal from Philadelphia, has cau our dealers in the article to raise the retail price some twenty-five to fifty cents per ton. Wood by the cargo has also advanced lastont the same ratio The only arrival by the river since our report of yesterday is the schooner Mansion, Harrington, Havre de Grace, with 146 tons coal to Barron & Stover.
