Captain King. her com- mander, arrived at Alexandria on Saturday last, and — to take charge of her. A brig was seen in the lower river vesterday, upward bound. posed to be the brig Fidelia from Cowes, Eng. The captain of the steamer Coliyer has determined to run his beat with ax much regularity as poasibie until prevented by the winter’s ice. He has fixed upon six o’clock, Pp. m., for his last daily trip to Alexandria, and will adhere to that arrangement throughout the remainder of the season. About half- 2 o’clock yesterday afternoon, 2 party ot eight or ten armed men, who had just returned from an excursion to the south end of the Long Bridge, came to the Collyer wharf, and calling at the tavern of Mr. George T. Howard. demanded to be admitted, saying that they wished to purchase cigars. Mr. Howard not ing at home, his wife refused to admit them, when they instantly began to insult her with the most vile abuse, and proceeded to smash the windows and make a general destruction of any thing that th could lay hands on. Mose Correr Tixves.—On Saturday last, during the dinner hour of the men working on the Capitol extension, one of the workmen dis- covered a fellow workman making off from the building with a bag over his shoulder, in which was concealed a roll of plate copper. He in- stantly gave the ery to stop him, and inan instant the place was all alive with men running after the man, the police and watchmen about the Capitol taking an active part in the chase. The thief left in such haste that he forgot his coat, and one of the day watchmen once got so near him as to catch him by the waistcoat, which tore in balf, leaving the detached part in the hands of the discomfitted watchman. ‘The thief made his ‘way out of sight before any one could catch him. He disappeared in the direction of the canal. ‘The roli of copper weighed sixty-eight pounds, and was worth about SIU. The thief fin ig the weight more than he could make off under, let it drop, and it wax accordingly recovered and placed in the office of Capt. J. A Tait, together with the hat, coat and vest of the thief. About half an hour after the above occurrence another work- man caught still another laborer with a roll of copper which he was endeavoring to smuggle of with him. Chase was instantly made after the fellow, and, strange to say, he got off too befure any one could overtake him. He went in the same direction as the first one. The officers have ot on their track, and are confident that they can catch both of these fellows, one of whom was not long since discharged from the Navy Yard for being caught in a sumilar act. Justice Mulloy sent to Captain Mills and ob- tained tne assistance of Messrs. Shortt, Harper and Hayzell, who continued to search for the thieves during the night. and yesterday morning Mr. Shortt found one of them, named —— Bur- dine, secreted in a stable east of the Capitol Grounds. He war taken before Justice Mulloy, who committed him to jail for trial at Court. Tue New Dome.—On Saturday afternoon the first one of the long heavy pillars of the new dome was hoisted up and set in place under the superintendence of Messrs. One poor fellow, named Cor- aelius Collins, had bis head very badly cut, and Was taken to the guard-house. He said it was cut by his falling against the stove. But in the opinion of the physician, if Corny received his wound in ty y he must have been under the stove and fil upwards. [t is not considered a dangerous wound, though it frightful one to look at. After it was dressed Collins was sent home with bis wife, who had gone to the guard- house to attend him A Revotrer Ovr.—Last night two boys, by the name of Sullivan, were arrested by the watch- men inthe Seventh Ward, for being disorder and firing a pistol in the street. They were taken to the guardhouse. and this morning wese each fined $5 and costs. A very good revolver was taken from one of the youths, which he demanded, but the Captain of the Guard told him he couldn't get it. ‘Bul,’ said the applicant. “it belongs to that gentle- man,’’ pointing to a man near the dock. Yerby, a clerk in the General Land Office,) Went out with several boys for the purpose of gathering persimmons and chestnuts near the city. Oneof them carried a loaded pistol, which Was entrusted to Henry, which he placed in the wai-tband of his pantaloons. ‘The party returned about three o'clock, and on reaching homme, in endeavoring to take the pistol from bis person, (the left hand being placed on the mouth of the same) by some means the cock was forced npon the cap, exploding it, the bali passing between the first and second fingers of the left hand, shat- tering the band in a dreadful manner. Her screams attracted a large crowd of persons and Justice Daniel Smith promptly interfered to arrest the assailant. Brown resisted the at- tempt at arrest, whereupon the vistrate called upea all good citizens to aid him; but, instead of so doing, the spectators drew away, widening the ring, either too cowardly to endanger their own lives, orelse disposed to witness a tight be- tween the magistrate and his prisoner. These Miserable specimens of hamanity are just the men to keep up an eternal grumbling because the laws are not ei . ‘The prisoner was se- cured, however, and walked off to the guard- house, but not one of the cowardly dozen or two of spectators dared testify to the facts af the as- sault, and he was discharged for want of evi- dence. The colored girl says that Brown ad- dressed her at the corner of Sixth street and the aveuue, aud, grasping her roughly by the arm, insisted upon her accompanying him home; that she feigned assent to induce bim to loose his hold, and that on getting free she ran into the Lotel toavoid him, and he following, knocked her down, as above stated Tue Ricumonn Custom House Ropeuxs— Axotuer CavGutT—Somerville, the supposed aecomplice of Wheeler, alias Pulling, in the Richmond robbery, was arrested in that city on Saturday night, by county officer Allen. Mr Allen arrived at Richmond, and proceeded to the Powhatan House, where he ascertained that a man answering to the desc iption of Somerville was at that moment in one of the rooms of the house. Mr. A proceeded to the room and opened it, when he discovered his man ensconced in bed. He was taken out and lodyed in mae About his baggage some £1,200 of the stolen money was found and placed in bank by Mr. Allen, who then returned to Washington. ar- riving here yesterday morning. O/flicer Boss was immediately dispatched to Richmond to concert measures for fixing the proof of the commission of the Custom Honse ney by the arrested par- ties. A piece of the stolen money if it can be found, can be identified, it having been worn as a breastpin. Somerville was committed to jail for a further hearin, which will take place after Pulling is taken to Richmond from this city. P.S. Officer Allen has received a telegraphic despatch from ofticer Boss, announcing his suc- cess in identifying the money found upon the rob- bers as that stolen from the custom-house. The coin sought for, for this purpose, was a half-ea- gle which had been used as a breastpin, and which has been found amongst the recovered money. Officer Allen may well be congratulated upon the success of his shrewd and energetic measures for the arrest of these fellows. Cinevir Covar.—The October term com- inenced this morning at 11 o’clock—Judges Dun- lap, Morsell and Merrick on the bench. The court-room was pretty well filled with persons having business before the Court. The impar- lance term has been abolished, which brings that term under the sitting of the present one, and combines the dockets of bothterms. ‘Thismakes the docket unnsually large, there being some seventeen hundred and fifty cases to be disposed of during this term. The assignment is fifteen cases for each day of the term, and it is expected that the increased amonnt of business will make it necessary for the term to sit over until the next term. The Court, on consultation, announced that hereafter the first thing on opening the term would be the calling of the trial docket—the call- ing of the appearance docket to be discontinued. Mr. Chilton introduced to the court Allan B Magrnder, of Charlottesville, Va., who was ad- mitted to practice at ull the courts of the District.
