A new Savings Bank bas been established at Columbia, 3. C. The Salem ( Mass.) Register reports that the re- cent experience of the Salem savings banks is directly contrary to that of similar institutions in other parts. Instead of being withdrawn, the deposits have considerably increased during the panic. The New England worsted mills, in obedience to the demands of the times, held a conference with the overseers of their mills in regard to a Teduection of wages of I2}4 per cent., towhbich the operatives agreed. Afterwards a number of the operatives left, but the mills aregoing onas usual It is stated that A. & A. Lawrence & Co. have determined to shorten their credits, both for home and-export sales. Six months is the long- est time viven to jobbers and large dealers who bay by the package only, and eight months to exporters ond shippers of American goods. The rumors as to the effect of the times on the Morris Cana! Company appear to be, in some im- portant features, incorrect. A private note from an officer in the company says the company have wisely, as they think, postponed ull improvement of their works, but have not discharged a single boatman. The reduction up to the 3d inst. is nearly $6,000, as compared with the same period last year, but the amount of income is greater than in year previous to the fast. The Charleston News has the following notice of the banks of that State: “The banks of South Carolina cannot suspend. A suspension is made, by law, a forfeiture of charter, tpso facto They must pay throngh any run or pressure to the last dollar in their vaults. Before this result could be reached with atl its disasters, the people of South Carotina, who were never freer from em- barrassment, could and would sustain them with such a large supply of agricultural products, and convertible at once into sustaining credits or specie, that the resources of the banks could be Tealized to any needed extent.” The Michigan Centrat Railroad Company dis- no less than five hundred of their em- ployees on the first day of the month. and will soon discharze more. Messrs kson & Willey, of Detroit, discharged the g?Pater part of the mea employed in their extensive irow works at the same time, being over one hundred in num- ber. The Detroit Locomotive Works also dis- charged thirty men, selecting those who had no families to provide for. They will dispense with the services of a large number more as soon as the locomotives. now under process of construc- tion are completed, which will be in the course ofa few weeks. A letter from Manchester. N. H , dated Oct. 5, says: For the three last days of this week the cotton factories Lave suspended operations he Manchester and Amoskeay corporations ring out their help at five o'clock, instead of a quarler to seven, as heretofore, which makes a diilerence of *%& hours during the five days they work im a week. The Charleston Courier of the Sth inst. says: We understand that within the last two la some two thousand bales of cotton have bern sold fn this market. sixteen hundred of which ‘were taken yesterday, that negotiations for the same have been made in sterling at par, and francs at 5 52% a5 55; and one of our nking in- stitntions hax signified its intention to aid the mercantile community in this way, if only toa limiced extent. We rejoice to notice and record these facts, ax they evidence the return of a bet- ter state of thing+. and sincerely hope that they are the harbingers of returning confidence. Our staple, as was naturally to be expected under the circumstances. has matezially deelined in value, holders having been forced to submit to sacrifices to effect sales. The transactions of yesterday show a decline of full two cents, and perhaps a litile over, from the highest point of the market Tue Ittxess of Cor. Baxton.—The Wasb- if ton correspondent of the Charleston Mercury, writing on the Sth instant, says: ““tr. Benton is generally believed to be conva- lesewnt, but this isan error.
