AFFAIRS. at vi. ' ‘Gtonetrows, Oct. 13, 1857. The adjourned meeting of our citizens at For- Test Hall last night, was verynumerously attend= ed—the spacious hall bethg literally crowded. At7o'elock the mee(ing was called to order by the ¢hairman, J. N. Pearson, Esq), Mr. Thomas acting-as secretary. 7 Mr. Charles Siemmer offered several resol ntion®’ prescribing the course which the speakers for and against the railroad project should pursue, the time each should occupy the floor, and setting forth the propriety of the Corporation paying the rent, &c., of the Hall, inasmuch as the meetin: had been called for pnblie purposes. All 0! which was adopted by the meeting. W.H. Tenny, Esq., was first infodinced to the nad occupied their attention for half an , in acalm, lucid, and argumentative s h in favor of the proposition. He was followed by Mr. Slemmer in a plain, concise, and well-di- xested speech (written) which showed that he had considered the matter maturely in all its bearings. Judging from the tone of Mr Slem- mer’s speeches, the whole of his Me ition to the project grows out of a fear of additional taxa- tion, a matter well worthy to be matuarely con- sidered by all. We regret, exceedingly, to he compelled to say that this gentleman was not treated by many in the audience, while speaking, with that respect that a bold and free opponent shonld always receive from his adversaries. Eix+Mayor Addison was next introduced to the meeting, and he was greeted with long and loud applause. He gave a history of the project from its first incipiency several years ago, Levctibe Aa in glowing terms the many benefits which hi - lieved would result to Georgetown from the con- straetion of the road, eulogised our City Conn- cils for bringing the matter before the prople, ‘lealing his opponents. as he went along, some stunning blows, often bringing down the entire audience by his sallies of wit, rich anecdotes and. biting sarcasms, with perfect bursts of laughter and omar His wes what we calla telling speech, Hrhenext speaker was Dr. Mann. He informed the meeting that he was not an enemy to the project; was simply opposed to our Conpore i as such, embarking in works of internal improve- ments, because such a course was calculated to entail burdens upon all, mainly for the benefit of the few. The Doctor certainty made a very se! sible speech, one that did no discredit to his bead or his heart, and one that will, doubtless, tend in ho smull degree to elevate him in the estimation of our citizens. R. Ould, Esq., followed im favor of the sub- scription. He seemed to be on this occasion in his proper element for what we would cali a real crushing speech. The motives of the City Coun- cils having been impngned by one of the preced- ing speakers, who intimated that the inaugura- tien of the project by them was an attempt to cheat and deceive the people, seemed to nettle and thoroughly arouse him to a sense of his po- sition as the author of the measure, and the way he crushed and ground to powder the assertions and arguments of his opponents will doubtless cause them to deal with him more cautiously in the future. We take pleasure in calling the attention of the ous readers of the Star to the card of Prof ; in another column. The Professor and his lady stand unrivaled as teachers of music upon either of the instruments enumerated in his card At the time of closing this letter the voting upon the Railroad project is moving slowly on, and very quietly. The geueral impression, as we have remarked heretofore, is, that the project will be sanctioned by a large inajority ‘The steamer Columbia arrived from Baltimore this morning to Hyde & Davidson, with a carvo of merchandize to our ierchants here is quite a fleet of schooners lying at the coal docks await- ing cargoes.
