Doctor, in bis discourse, stated that he wished to have a fair understanding between the pastor and the og of his c ‘ion at the start; hestated hat it was not hfs intention to preach from eclec- tic cullings of the Scriptures; t e should, ac- cordin, his strict line of duty, preach every thi n the “Word,’’ and nothing which was not; he should expound no strange or erroneous doctrines, for if strange they were erroneous. He dwelt upon the fact that he had parted from a col tion over which he had presided for up- ward of twenty 's; that his parting from those. many of whom be had kuown from their earliest eat was a duty of a painful character; he gave the congregation to understand that he had not sought them, but wri? him; that he should, with Divine assistance, discharge all his duties faithfully for the good of his flock. The congre- tion present was very numerous, and deeply nterested in the eloqnent and strightforward words which were spoken. The Church is now ina very good condition as regards members, some reaped ads are rented, and applications come in every day. The old and rusty-looking locust trees, which have stood the test of time fora long space, along the line of the street, have been cut down, and the grade lowered from six to ten feet below the old yrade. ‘This will furnish one more con- venient approach to the Sixth street wharves for many citizens in that vicinity. Aboct MAtTineLy’s sew Witare some com- plaints have been made that the proprietor is ex- tending the wharf out beyond the point which the law specifies. Mr. M., to settle the matter, has requested the Com: ioner to bring an thorized Surveyor and have the place surveyed, to prove to these complainants that he has not exceeded the bounds required by law.
