axp OfmeD TxphOeEMENTs.—Sixth STREET street hax been graded this season from Maryla: avenue tothe river. On either side the pave- ment has been laid, and the gutter widened and deepened so as to effectually drain the street, and carty off the water from the streets ee Ps it, The advantage to real estate from this im- ptovement will be very considerable, beside the xreat benefit that will accrue to the travelling community thereabouts Various improvements have been effected on the Island the present season which has turned the tide of lot speculation on the part of some of our monied citizens to this portion of the city, where investments in city buiiding lots are moce likely to make quiek returns. We notice, in the Northern Liberties, that Sev- enth street west, from H to L, streets, has been cut down several feet. and the gutters on either side of the street taken up, widened from three to six feet, and repaved Also, M street north is being graded by Mr. EF. G. Barnes. under the supervision of Commission- er Owen. from Sixth street to New York avenur. This work has been needed for a long time, and ‘will accommodate the public vastly, particularly country people, who will fiad this street a direct route to the business portion of Seventh street. Building operations in this part of the city (Northern Liberties) are in active progress On the corner of Seventh and L streets, Mr. J. A. Stone (druggist) is having a brick house erected opposite his store, three stories high, some 20 feet front by 66 feet deep, with cast iron window cases and other modern improvements and em- bellishments. The work is being done in geod style by Messrs. ——. Downing & Bros, and when completed will be an ornament to the neighborhood. On M street, between Sixth and Seventh streets, our friend. Jerome Degges, of horticultaral fame, is causing a house to be erect- ed sdjoining bis own private residence, which is weil worth notice. It is three stories in height, with a high basement, excel'ently adapted to kitchen and dining-room purposes, is 20 feet front by 3g feet deep, with a large yard in the rear, to which is attached a fine brick stable, and every convenience for water and gas arrangements Such a house costs between $5,000 and $6,000, and will rent readily for $100 a year. On Sixth street, between M and N streets, Mr W_ A. Parker is erecting two very substantial looking brick houses, each being 16 feet front by 5U feet deep, and three stories in height They @belong to H. P. Lewis and to the estate of the “ late John MeLeod. carpenter Still higher up on thisstreet, at the corner of N street, stands a beautiful new Gothic Chapel, (Episcopal) which has been built under the mis- onary supervision of ‘Trinity Church, Rev. Mr. Commins tor. This little edifice is quite a feature of this portion of the Northern Liberties, and on looking about over the vicinity one is sur- prised at the extent of territory now thickly sct- tled, om which no church has hitherto been erected, the observer cannot aetp admitting, on taking aclose survey of the neighborhood, the Paramount necessity bog, | here fer the labors of the home missionary. We understand that much good has been effected in this district througkrthe arduous and earnest labors of Mr. J. L. Clubb of this city. We walk still farther up this street, between N and O streets. and observe two fine three-story frame houses nearly completed, the handiwork of HT. Greer. and owned by Quintin Barker, Esq. These buildings are 16 feet front, by 52 feet in <a and fill up the vacant space on the west side of Sixth street with good effect. On N street, between Sixth and Seventh streets, Messrs. Humphreys & Somer carpenters. are just completing three two-story frames, 16 feet front and 30 feet deep, with back building, and containing many modern conveniences. Mr. E Lacy is causing two two-story bricks to beerected jn the same square, which give quite a character to the neighborhood They are !5 feet front, by 3 deep, aud have convenient alleys for side en- trance. Preparations are being made for the erection of several more first class dwellings within astone’s throw of the above-named build- ings this fall and the coming winter. Post Orrick Extension.—The west front is being carried up by the bricklayers and stonema- sons with great rapid they are now working upon the third and tast story, which is more than belf done, and will be carried up this Fall, so as to be ready for the reception of the surrounding cornice and entablature the first thing in the Spring. The dead-letter office is to be removed from its present location to the southwest end of this wing, and two large rooms have been finished for the purposes of that department of the Gen- eral Post Office. The rooms Tunning north, on the first story of this front, are nearly completed: the plasterers are engaged in putting a beautiful white coat on the walls. and they will be ready for occupation by the Ist of December. This suite of rooms is to be temporarily occupied by the city postmaster and his chief clerk, as they are imine- diately contiguous to the new city post oitice. which is being rapidly completed. ‘The City P Mice will, without doubt, be ready for use by the Ist of December; the copper roof 1s nearly finished, and the iron workers are engaged in putting = the iron ceiling to the distributing rooms. The original pian of the delivery office has been changed. by carrying the delivery win- dows back several feet, leaving space for people to stand in froni, without being exposed to the cold north winds. ‘The carpenters are construct- ing the butkbead for the delivery boxe, the roof a ceiling will be finished by the end of next Week, and the ceiling will show off to great ad- Vantage the neat ornamental iren work, whieh has been cast in the foundery of Messrs. Beebe & Co., of New York Teanse Festivar—On Monday afternoon the German +Turners * of this city mustered at their headguarters on New Jersey avenue near the Rail- teed Depot, for their annual prize feucing and ZyYmnastic exercises. The participants, headed by their gallant cap- tain (Turuwart) CG. Dieterick, Jr., entered the Turu-yard, where they were addressed by Mr Waildecker, the President of the Association; af- ter whieh, the exercises were entered upon aud admirably executed Prizes, consisting of books, engravings, &c.. were awarded to “Turners’’ Carr, H. Dieterick, pe, at Waidecker, Schutz, Kraft, Pickard, Pfeil, Kaunmerer, Hoffer, and Wenzler, and to the scholars Angermann, Lawenstein and G. Die- terick The exercises in fencing were exceedingly well performed. Mr. Witzleben is the teacher of this class. At eight o'clock in the evening the theat- rical entertainment was entered upon, under the management of Mr. Schel!haas; the play, which was well performed, being the “Seven Girls in Uniform.”? After the curtain fell, the theatre was converted into a ball room, and the waltz, polka, and quad- rille, oceupied the company until two o'clock in the mornin, Ta concluding this notice we must not omit to mention the acceptable musical performances of the Mannerchor, led by Mr. Christian, nor the excelleat supper furnished by the jovial host, Mr Ackmana Tue River —A heavy foz overspresd the river during last night, which was so thick that the mail steamer Baltimore experienced considerable @ificulty in working her way up from the Creek, and was compelled to run at a very much re- duced rate of speed, throwing the lead every few moments through the night. She passed a large number of coasting vessels and one hermaphodite brig om ber passa bound. Ta Onp Cent. —Some days ago, a produce dealer in one of our markets sold a customer a half- peck of potatoes fora levy, and in taking bis pay from a quarter dollar, returned twelve cents change. This the customer declined to receive, claiming thirteen cents as his due. A dispute eosurd, which ended in the customer getting out @ warrant for the odd cent, and, the case being tried. he recovered it The dealers refuse to receive foreign silver coin and they do not substitute the decimal figures for the fractional system, which sh. been repudiated with the “tps”? and + levies.” If they intend to ebarge thirteen cents or nine- teen cents for an article, let theim say so, and then there will be a frir understanding between buyer and seller. As it is the purchaser Is almost inva- riably gouged out of the odd cent in making change. Excarey —William Williams, who was c ted at the term of the Criminal Court of riot at the « o in June, and was serving out @ term in the county jail, made his escape yeste:- day. To each < Yn turn, Mayor Vaux made a speech, wel ing the strangers to the city, and referring to the Hall of Independ- ence and the associations which cluster around it. On the part of the Northern Liberties he wail replied to by Mr. John G. McCathen; on part of the Franklin, by Wm. J. Gary, chief marshal of the company, and, the Metropolitana by Thos. Lloyd. ‘They all expressed their high gratifiea- tion at the warm welcome they had received at the hands of the Philadelphia Firemien, and the pleasure they felt in visiting the Hall of Inde- pendence. On Monday morning the Franklin had a very handsome silk flag pennies to them at the house of Messrs. Leamer Gibson, on Second str: by the Weccacoe Association. It was presenti on behalf of the donors by J. R. Lyndall, and was received by W. J. Gary on behalf of the re- cipients. They were also presented witb a silv-r horn, valued at about |, by the Good Will engine company, and also with fifty or sixty ma; oe wreaths, by various companies and their riends ‘ On Tuesday orang ihe Franklin partook of an elegant supper with the Weecacoes. The Franklin returned to this city yesterday. On arriving in Baltimore they were saluted wiih a shower of stones by a gang of rowdies, one of the stones passed through the flag presented them by the Philadelphia Compan: . Marshall Her- ung, with Lieut. Carmichael with a | oar of police officers, escorted the Franklin tothe Cam- den Station, and from thence tothe Relay House. About three miles from Baltimore, at the bridge where the railroad crosses the turnpike, a gan: of rowdies were collected for the Bt spleae «i of at- tacking them as they passed, but the présence of the police probably prevented a riotous demon- stration. The Franklin members speak in the highest terms of their reception and treatment in Philadelphia. Last NIGHT a man named Moriarty went to the guard-house with his children, two little xirls, one of them barefoot, and complained that his wife was drunk, and led him and his chil- dren a hard life. She was sent for, and locked up in acell il this morning, when her husband appear gainst her and wanted her sent to the Workhouse. She D sreesrgies against being sent down, and averred that she got drunk only to spite her husband, who was jealous of her. We regard the suspension of the Messrs. Dodye as a public calamity for Georgetown. We think it likely that this house has done more to pro- mote the general trade of our city than any busi- ness house ever located in our midst, and their suspension will be seriously felt by all classes in our community. Not only will the maltitude of rsons constantly Rout in profitable employment by their lines of packets be seriously inconve- nienced, but our custom: house and the entire community will feel sensibly the great loss that must my, result from a suspension of their heavy importatfonsof sugar, &c. Being possessed of a very benevolent and philanthropic turn of mind, they seemed to take a pleasure in assisting others, and no enterprising business man who sought their assistance was ever turned empty away; and in every public enterprise that was started, which seemed .to promise a pS of the general weal, they were generally foremost. We therefore think that we bat écho the general sentiment of our entire community when we utter the wish that the ony is not far distant when these enterprising and pyblie spirited gentlemen will be placed fully upon their feet, (in a pecuniary sepeop of view,) and go on in their business as eretofore, From an advertisement in another column it will be seen that Forrest Hall is to be offered at public sale on Saturday next. This js a fine piece of property, and if some person would take hold of it Who would take an interest in itand attend to the management of it themselves, it might we think, be made to yield a compensative revenue. Several of the fine rooms in it are already perma- nently occupied. A meeting of our citizens is to be held to-mor- row evening at Forrest Hall, to discuss. the pro- priety of smaking a subscription of $200,000 to the stock of the Alexandria, Loudoun and H ire railroad, to be expended in constructing a branch to connect with our city. Let every voter who can, go and hear, and judge for himself. We un- derstand that several able speakers will be present to entertain the meeting. In our hurried notice of canal affairs yesterday, we, in speaking of the candidates for the Collec- ese unintentionally used the name Hollings- head fnstead of Hollinsworth. We would advise the lady readers of the Star, one and all. to [2% attention tothe advertisements of Ms. A. Wollard and Miss McDonald. Fine feathers, they say, make fine birds. At each of the before mentioned establishments a rich pro- fusion of everything in the way of beantifaland fashionable topping-off articles can lg had at moderate prices.
