| | } A > Caprrot Extension —The changes which eaoh day brings about at the new Capitol can only be seen to be properly estimated. Undoubtedly the new House hall will be completed before the next meeting of Congress. The carpenters — nearly completed the spectators’ ailery, and the surrounding lobbies are just receiving the fluish- ing touches of the painters. Inside the ball the walls are being gilded and polished. The gas pipe and burners are. nearly all placed fn readiness for use, and on Tuesday last the whole of the underground portion of the south wing was illuminated to test bard a and ess of the lighting arrangements. was pro- semua te be permet, and found to have been executed in the very best and most substantial manner. The heating apparatus will be comple- ted in a few days, and is a complicated wonder. being so arranged that the hot air can, in case of accident oceurring to any portion of the Pipe, be shut off, and the damaged part repaired, without any disarrangement of the other parts. To-da the operatives on the new dome are again in full Diast; the bricklayers, under the supervision of Mr. Z. Jones, are laying up the walls between the iron brackets, to prepare for the huge pilasters which will begin to arrive next week from the manufactory, and will be set up as fast as they arrive. Some fourteen of them are already done, and the establishment in Baltimore are turming ont two pilasters each day. Some two hundred thousand brick will be convetted into well upon the new dome before thé season shall close. This day's work completes the. sewer whieh fs designed to drain the Capitol, and which has been executed in an incredibly short space of time. Tux Houticti Turan Exuisition opened yes- terday at Corcoran’s new building, and was ex- ceedingly well attended; the ladies especially, many of whom are members of the society, added by their presence to the beauty of the display The cablbition, in the variety and beauty of the articles displayed, and in their extremely tasteful disposition, is an improvement on the last exhi- bition Among the new varieties of floral display, are excellent seedling peteunias, presented by Dr Page ; dxblias, by Mr. Jardine; manittia caxe- neas, by Joln Watt, and a large variety of herba- ceous plauts fiom various depositors. bonquet display is most pleasing and varied. -Among the most beautiful of the selections from the green house. are several superb vase bouquets from the hand of Mrs. John Watt. Dr. Page presents some hew varieties of the verbena, which are well Worth potice. The fruits and vegetables are of a superior character. Among them we notice mammoth egg plants from the wardens of Wm. Cammack. Esq.; the beautiful squash from the grounds of John M. Sims; as also specimens of the bas- sano, sugar, mangel, wurtzel, and blood red tur- nips; London long, and various other classes of beets, from Wim. Blazden, Es}. The exhibition of grapes, native and foreign. from the grounds pes ne, M. Grittth and John K. Vernon, end also from the garden of Prof. Page, as well as from Mr. Blagden, give additional character to the show. Apples and pears of good varieties, and figs, prackies &c.. call for the especial notice of the visitor. * The display this fall is much better than that of last spring, and indicates increased interest in horticultural matters. The public demand one, and can support one better than any city of the same number of inhabitants. There has always been a theatre here of some descri tion ever since Washington could claim the title of acity, and it is now only a question of time. It is as interesting to the tradesman as to the leasure seeker that such an attraction should be Immediately added to the list of inducements for strangers to spend their winters here, and it is devoutly to be wished that the usual delay in such matters should not be made, but that some enterprisii matter in and and erect or fit ui; individual may be found to take the a snug and commodious theatre of moderate dimensions. A large theatre ix neither necessary nor suitable. We require bevstecri= which will serve both for 1 dramatic representat ns and concerts. It is a mistaken idea to presume that the legitimate drama requires a large building. In Shak: res time, the largest theatre, the Fortune, was but fifty-tive feet square in the clear. Garrick’s The-, atre was but half the size of our old National. The late Covent Garden Theatre held 2,500 pee as. Rei and such judges as Edmund Kean and C emble, before in giving their evidence on the subject, committee of the House of Commons, ronounced that theatre too large for the actors to heard well or seen smnaller house would serve every pur; u y or melodrama, and at the same time be ter for comedy, vaudevilles, pantomimes “and opera distinctly, and that a for Sir Walter Scott said, on the proposal of a new theatre in Edinburgh, ‘* Whenever the new the- atré is built, | hope it will not be large. It 1s better that it shouid be crowded now and then, than to have a large theatre with benches contin- like a bil ent of the actors ectators.”” Anything -at the old National, always drew a full house of 3,000 to 4,000. It will certainly be «a good investment, to construct a theatre which will serve half the year for the regular drama, and the other balf for concerts, panoramic ex- hibitions and minstrel troupes. If the old theatre lot is out of the Guestion, the walls of the Assem- bly Ruoms, on Louisiana avenue, are of sufficient dtimensious for a theatse, econumically arranged, to accommodate 2,500 spectators: Let us have a good theatre if possible, but at any rate let us havea Tueatre. Cay at “ hon ': Ki Lee Cor, Vermont avenue aud loth sircet, Correspondence of The Star. Gkorcetown, Oct. 1, 1557. Considerable frost, the first of the season, we believe, in this latitude, made its appearance this morning. We would inform ouz wood and lumber mer- chants, if they are,not already cognizant of the fact, that the recent cool nights and mornings has caused quite a run upon their piles by dis- honest persons who prefer stealing their supinies to earning them by Fonest labor. This class of petty thieves is generally composed of persons who either spend the greater portion of their time in idieness or, when they work, what little money they earn meinly in intoxicating drinks They are, of all classes, the last to be pitied, and should be most severely dealt with by the law. We venture the assertion that our merchants nightly lose at least one cord ef wood and lum- ber, One-fourth of what they lose in the aggre- gate would secure the services of an efticient watchman to cers their property. We already begin to hear a very general com- plaint among the retail trade, of a deficiency of small change to accommodate the public. We know of uo immediate relief which could be of- fered just now. All will have to bear it as pa- tiently as possible for a while. The diflicult may, we think, however, be somewhat mitigat by those who have silver or gold pela in their Fogeension to studiously avoid suffering it to fall ‘nto the hands of money-shavers. Let every per- son, in common business transactions, pay in the currency he receives, and the difficulty will full comparatively light upon all. Whose business is it to see that the several breaches in the footways in the market Louse are repaired ; several rather ugly ones have existed here for some mouths. We have heard many complaints about them, but as yet we have seen no sleps taken to have the evil remedied. Surely the revenue arising to the town fom this piece of property is sutticient to keep it in decent condi- tion and repair forthe accommodation of those doing business there, and the public at large. ‘We also hear many complaints among persons of their inability to get their weizhts and measures adjusted and stamped. Who ean tell what be- came of the valuable set of standard weights and Measures once in possession of the clerks of the tmarket; the present incumbent informs us that they never came into his possession. We would advise the heads of families gener- ally to pay attention to the advertisement of Mr W.-H. Tenny, in another column We are not a little amused sometimes at soine country persons who get hold of a bank note in payment for their produce Many of them mani- fest a sort of holy horror at the idea of having to putthem into their pockets, and when they are compelled to do so, it is with such reluctance that one would believe they regarded thei asa sort of perishable commodity which could vanish into thin air before they are again called upon to handle them. We would advise all such timid souls to get the notes of the Corporation of George town. ‘They may lay them by if they choose There ts not even the possibility of any danger of loss by holding them.
