Correspondence of The Star. Grorcxtown, ‘Sept. 25, 1857. We have been requested by several of the mem- bers of the Vigilant Fire Company to call the at- tention of the Corporate authorities to the fact that the whole of the Mose attached to the en- gines are in a miserable condition, wholly inad- equate to euable them to render anything like ef- fective service in case of a tire. During the prev- alence of the fire on Saturday night nearly every span which was put in use burst as soon as eny- thing like a full volume of water was forced into them. Inasmuch as the company has been thor- oughly bets acpar and rendered efficient, as was evinced by their conduct at the before-men- tioned fire. We hope our Corporation will sup- ply them with a set of hose that will stand test when needed. We learn that some uneasiness is experienced upon the part of the friends of Mr. Jumes Wil- son, aclerk in the dry goods store of Mr. H. KE. Berry, on account of his sudden disappearance from among them. It is also rumo’ that his hatand coat was found uw; one of our river wharves. After writing the above we were In- formed that he was seen last night at one of the refectories in our city. The stories afloat in our city in relation to our canal are almost as numerous as the locks upon the line. One is that the recent rains had caused. considerable rise jn the river, and that the leaks in Dam No. 5 had been nearly stopped, and that navigation will soon be again resumed. An- other is that the rains did not extend that far west, and (hat there is not over two to two and a half feet of water on some of the levels. It is a hard matter to determine which of these stories is true. For own part we are inclined to give most eredeuce to the latter. ‘The barquentine Horace Beale, Capt. Johnson. which bas been waiting several days for a cargo of coal, left this morning for Rockland, Maine, light. She was towed down by the steam-tag Bell Haven The captain informed us yesterday that he had lost over sixty days this season while waiting upon the canal for a cargo. If this be true it exbibits a loss to one single vessel in wear, tear, and expense of keeping a crew on board, of at least $1,500 Very extensive revivals of religion are now go- jing on in botn of the colored Methodist churches in our city Siace writi the foregoing article in relation tothe canal, we bave learned from one of our merchants, whe has just returned from up the line, that the first n wed rumor ‘The fall of rain in tha as ne to es nv material rise in the nver t aking badly, and there is no bability of the cout heat getting down until ins shall occur sudicient to overcome the di culty. At some points this side of the before mentioned dam, there is only abont three feet of water upon the mitre sill in the locks and on the level veral boats partially laden with flour will doubtless leave Williamsport for our city to-day. We also learn that many persons in the upper counties of Maryland, bordering upon the canal, are loud in their complaints about the manner in which its aifairs are belay managed, Gi openty charge some of the superintendents and others with Gereliction of duty. The flour market this morning is firm at $5,50a 5.62 for standard ; extra brands command a trifle No change in wheat or corn since our last Spectator. FOR RENT AND SALE.
