Frarrvut Acctpent.—A dreadful accident oc- curred last night to a lady passenger by the stage from Frederick city The coach stopped as usual 02 its arrival, at the City Post Office, to deposit the mails; and while the yp —_ engs — delivering the mail at the office, atreched S the stage pon fright and started down the street at a fearful rate. with noone in the stage but the iad: . The horses ran down E street to Eighth; thence to Pennsylvania avenue, down which they pluaged. scattering sparks of fire from their hoofs. When they reached tLe corner of Seventh street and the Ave- nue they made a very sharp turn—the evach by a miracle retaini its upright ition—pass! over the canal bri with Increased apmede During ail this time the ——— Screaming for help. which could not be afforded by reason of the speed at which the horses were proceeding. When about balf way between the bri and the street bounding the south side of the ith- sonian grounds, the lady managed to force the door of the coach open, as is Sis Pgriblnrzs leay to the ground, striking ber right temple against the curbstone, and inflicting dreadful wounds about her face and arms. Several persons who witnessed the fearful leap rushed up to the spot where she was lying insen- sible, and proceeded to apply several remedies usoal on such occasions, for her restoration. A back was sent for, and the injured woman was speedily taken to the hashes ory Infirmary, where she was cared for by the j-hearted in- mates. She has remained insensible up to this writing, and noone bas yet a} to ree ize ber Senge Foner from Frederick City, and informed the driver of the coach that she dived on the Island inthis city. St e to. say, ber nume was not registered in the books at the coach office. ‘The fall from the coach produced concussion of the brain, and though she breathes regularly yet there is no sign of returning consclousness. It is to be hoped that this will meet the eye of her 1 tends in this city or elsewhere, that she may be cared for by others than strangers. P.S —Sinee writing the above we learn that the trunk of the young lady was opened this morning by Justice Daniel Smith, which con- tained a letter from Wm. Yonson, addressed to his daughter, Margaret C. Yonson, in Frederick, requesting ber to return home. Sucha man lives on the Istand in this city, and the letter was im- mediately dispatebed fn the hands of an officer to the supposed father of the young tady for iden- tification Star Distaier Porice—Before Justice Cull. Jeremiah Henesy was made to appear to answer a charge of selling liquor without a license. ‘There had been an Irish funeral, and, as some- times Lg asad on_such occasions, the friends had a small jolifieation; and, after a short time, they all got very lively and kicked up a great many shines of a not very pacific nature. The inform- ant, knowing that Henesy had no license'to sell Hiquor by the glass, lodged a complaint and had him up. But, it fell out that Henesy had been treating his friends, not selling to them “st all, at all;’’ and he very stoutly asserted his right to give away his ‘corn-top*’ to whomsvever he pleased His honor dixcharged the case. James Bryen was called up for disturbing the congregation that worships in the colored Bethel Church, wear the foot of the Capitol. No one appeared against the defendant, and the charge was disinissed. George Reneker undertook to perform the feat of ditving his horse over the gravel footway of Tenth street, to the terror of the Sixthwarders, as well as in defiance of the law; he was fined $2.00 and $1.13 costs. . Jobn Bell was arrested for threatening and fane language towards the little son of John est; fined $i.04. Joba Smith came up the third time witbin the Jast two months on the old charge of selling li- or in doses smailer than the law allows for People in the small grocery line. Smith always gets off. This time he yot off again, and seemed to erry much the idea of being too smart for the law. The witness in the present case was too good natured to acknowledge that Smith had charged him for the drinks that had made him tight; so the magistrate dismissed Mr. S. with = promise to have him indicted properly next time Mititary Visitors.—The Morgan Continen- tals, Captain Jackson, a well-drilled, and hand- somely-uniformed (Revolutionary style) company from Winchester, Va , reached Washington this morning via Alexandria. They wereescorted by the Alexandria Ritlemen and Mount Vernon Guards, and with Weber's band of this city, the band of the Coutinentals, and an Alexandria band TO- ‘or Having paraded through some of the principal streets, they proceeded to the Executive Man- sion, where they were received by Dr. J B. Blake, Commissioner of Public Buildings, who informed them of tbe absence of the President. He having gone on a visit to his home in Penn- sylvania. After passing through the principal halls of the President’s House the battalion was formed and marched to the War Department and paid their respects to Secretary Floyd, who re- ceived them heartily. The battalion then pro- ceeded to visit other places of interest about the city. t is discreditable to ont military companies that not one of them was out to receive the visit- ors Tue Rivzx —The steamer Baltimore reports mothiag above the Creek but river craft. and there ‘were no arrivals at Alexandria yesterday except @ few of the same class Arrived yesterday, at Riley’s wharf, schr. A Stuone Contrasr was that of last night, between the darkness, chill and damp of the outer world and the brilliantly-lit-up, cheerful room of the Assembly's Church Fair. ‘Phe sen- sation of passing from oue to the other was a de- licious one, and we advise the reader to try it on The array of beauty at the Fair last night was almost bewildering to the bachelor rye. ‘There was a pretty girl to every square yard of space, at Jeast; and the proportion would have been larger, doub.less, but for the prevailing fashion. The Assembly's Chureh has certainly a brave show of petty women. We mean to take @ pew there! By the way, who are the ‘+ Harmoacons,’? who sang so deliciously at the Fair last night? The management have shown good judgment in fur- nish excellent music, h vocal and instru- mental. City Imrxovements.—The Commissioner of of the Third and Fourth Wards has begun the arrangements for trimming and graveling Eighth street between D and EF. streets; paving and gra- ding alley in square 447; constructing a sewer to connect with one at Fifth street, thence to } street; grading and graveling E from Ninth to Tenth st vets. and paving and grading alley in square 43. This work will proceed as rapidly as possible ‘The new store of Somatuixne Hanvsoxg. Harper & Mitchell, on Pennsylvania avenue, is attracting universal attention from the ladies. In ail its arrangements it is fitted up according to the latest style for first class reta‘] dry goods stores in the Northeru capitals, and refieets great credit on the taste and er ga of the proprietors, as well as on the skill of the mechanics of Wash- ington Stealing in Marcet —This morning, a:ol- ored boy was caught bya country dealer in the actof removing cabbages from his pile without having given him an equivalent therefor He Was taken to the clerk of the Centre Market, who directed bim to be carried before Jusiice Smith; but the owuer of the cabbayes, thinking the bey scared bad enough, rel him. Wasiinorox Grarps —This is the new name of the second company of the volunteer regiment, formerly styled the ‘National Greys.” The cbange of name is made necessary by their change of uuiform. The case was, Sauer failed to satisfy an exe- eution against him for debt; and officers Little and Vermillion proceeded to his house to levy on his chattels, when Sauer, abetted by his wife. made various threats and curses against the sai officers, and proceeded to carry them into effect. Mrs. Sauer seized an axe with Which she appear- ed to be about to terminate the existence of officer Little, when Vermillion caught it from her hand, and while Little watehed ber, to keep her from further mischief, Vermiltion obtained a warrant for their arrest. They were tried before Justice Rowland, who held them both over, to appear at the next term ef the Criminal Court, &c.; and,in the meantime, they were required to give security to keep the peace toward everybody.
