EVENING STAR. |-——_ BRITAIN AND INDIA. {From Campbell's Pleasures of Hope.} Ye onent reaims, where Ganges’ waters run! olifie helds! dommmions of the sun* . low long your tribes have trembled and obeyed: low long was Timour’s iron sceptre sway marshaled hosts, the lions of the plain, From Sey tain’s northern mountains to the main, Raged o'er your plundered slirines and altars base, With binging torch and gory scunitar,— Stauned wih the cries of death each gentle gale, ad bathed in blood the verdure of the vale! dee could no pangs the immortal spirit tame, When Brams's children perished for his name; The martyr smiled beneath avenging power, And braved the tyrant in his torturing hour! When Europe sought your subject realms to gain, And stretcliea her giant sceptre o’er the main, Taught her proud barks their winding way to shape, And braved the stormy spirit of the Cape ; Childrenot Brama! then was marer nigh To wash the stain of biood’s eternal dye? Did Peace descend, to triumph and to save z When free-bern Briton’s crossed the Indian wave? Ah, no!—to more than Rome’s ambitioa true, ‘The Nurse of Freedom gave it not to you! She the poid route of Europe's cult began, And in the march of nations, led the van! Rich is the gems of India’s gaudy zone, And plunder pried from kingd..ms not their own, Degenerate Trade! thy minions could despise ‘The heart-born anguish of a thousand erties ; Could lock with impious hand: While fumshed nations died men and bear ied with despair! man’s polluted name, And barter, with their gold, eterna! shame! But hark! as bowed to earth the Bramin kneels, From heaveniy climes propitious thunder peals! Of India’s inte her cuardian spirits tell, Prophetic murmurs breathiag on the shell, fed antes sounds, that awe the list’ning mind, Roll ou the azure pathsof every wind. Foes of mankind a (her gusrdian spirit say,) evolving age < the bitter day, When He tvon’s unerring arm sha!l' fall on you, And blood for blood these Indian p.ains bedew ; Nine times pave Brama’s wheels of lightmng hurled His awiui presence o’er the alarmed world! Niae times hath faut. Soy all his giant frame, Convulsive trembied as the Mighty came! Nine times hath suifering Merey spared in vain— Bat Heaven shail burst her starry gates again : He comes! dread Hi shakes the suniess sky With marmuring ind thunders from on high! Af ter deserilung the monoply of salt, betel nut. and tobacco, the historian proceeds thus: “Money in this curreut came by drops; it could uot quench the thirst of those who waited in India to receive it. A NEW PRESIDENTIAL MANSION. {From the New Orleans Picayune.] We see it intimated that, at tho next session of Congress, a proposition will be made for the erection of a fitting house for the residence of the Presidents of the United States, at the seat of national government. We hope that the ef- fort will be successiul. The present mansion is Situated in one of the most unhealthy parts of the District of Columbia. The consequence has been that no family can reside in it, tor a long period, without danger, and rethaps destruc- tion to their health. We think that we should not greatly err, were we to aay that this incon- venience has heen feit, in a greater or lesa de- gree, by every incumbent of the Presidential office, since the city of Washington became the seat of government. It has been a constant topic of complaint, and facts within the know!- ge ci all who have been in the habit of spend- ing much time at the national capital, have abundantly sabstantiated it as a well-grounded eomplaint The gazetteers and guide-books. in describing the public buildings of Washington, unite in representing the President's house as situated “‘on a beautiful lawn, gently sloping towards the Potomac, and el ated forty-four feet above it.” But this deseription, though technically correct, conveys an erroneousidea, inasmuch as this beautiful lawn does not skirt the Potomac atall. In the first place, there 13 a public road between its boundary wall and tho border of Tiber Creek, which runs in from the river, and reat portion of the time low, marshy and 5 ant. Miasma, at certain seasons of the year. isexhaled from its bosom continuously, and renders the White House untenantable by persons who have any regard for their health. In point of fact, there is hardly another lo- cation in the city of Washington (which, as a whule, cannot justly besaid to be an unhealthy place of residence.) which would nut be better, im # sanitary point of view, as the site of the President's mansion, than that now occupied as such. And now that the Treasury is full and ean well enough afford the expense, we hope that the desideratum of so many years ts attained by the adoption by Congress of the = ieasure. A splendid addition to the ‘apitol is now in the course of completion, and there would be a peculiar fitness in erecting a “ White House” that should bea fitting com- panion to it at the same time. In an economical view of the matter, it may bes sted that the present mansion house of the President need not be abandoned by the Government. It is well known that some of the public officers are not a little cramped fur room; and that buildings, by no means ade- qpate for their accommodation, and for the convenient transaction of business, have been leased or purchased, asa matter of absolute ne- cessity, for the lack of more fitting ones. The White House, though unfitted by its location for a family residence, would furnish excellent accommodations for several of the department bureaus. We cherjeh the hope that the time is not far distant when—the Capitol! extension being com- pleted—there may rise, at the seat of the na- tinal government, a residence for its chief magistrate that may be proudly pointed at as ™ every way worthy of the nati ARRIVALS AT THE HOTELS BROWNS’ HOTEL —s A Dysart.
