L Cc E Tre ALEXANDRIA TingL of last evening MADAME Mount has preparod by special request, OCAL INTELLI Tus Rivex.—The mail steamer Baltimore was detained last night by the breaking of an axle on one of the cars, between Fredericksburg and the Creek. The accident was discovered in time to it a to the cars or passengers. chaps Se railroad line in the country hes fewer accidents than the line between Aquia creek and Richmond. The pilot of the Baltimore reports several upward bound sc! anchored at various points above the Creek, waiting a breeze to bring them up to the tnree cities. He describes jast night as being the most beautiful he ever witnessed on the Potomac, the re being fectly transparent, and the water reflecting k the rays of the moon and stars with the most astonishing effect. The Mary: |, Capt. Wm. Mitchell, arrived up yesterday afternoon at 3% o’clock, bringing up- wards of fifty passengers. Soon after her arrival a crowd of carts came driving down to the wharf for oysters, and one old horse, evidently just from some portion of the country where steam power is unknown, on hearing the whiz of the steam as it was being let off from the boiler of the boat, made « demonstration of astonishment and alarm, whirling round and completely upsetting the car- riage of a gentleman which stood near bg, tilting it up and lodging it on the top of an adjacent oyster cart. ‘* next move was to make tracks from the immediate vicinity of the steamer, in doing so he ed to ran against a darkie and nearly broke his back, by squeezing him against a wood pile. The quadru then took auother turn, suddenly scattering the crowd in all directions, and wound up his mischief by pe over an old woman who stood near the shore en of the wharf, nearly killing her. The last that was seen of this “Gilpin” steed he was making teacks up Eleventh street at 2.27 speed, his tail on a level with bis back, his head extended similar- ly, his eyes rolling with horror and affright, and using carriages and foot ngers to make xpected and intricate dedges to avoid his fear- ful hoofs. He i probably by this time tar olf among the green bilis of his nativity, where the mareh of progress & yet unknown. ‘The steamer Baltimore went dowa this morn- ing with a fair number of passengers. Also, the steamer Columbia, Baltimore bound, having on board several families. ‘There was no arrival at Alexandria yesterday. The barkantine Ephriam Williams is at the coal depot at Alexandria, taking in a cargo for the Hast The coal is arriving in large quantities from Cumberland, and is accumulating rapidly at the coal depot. ‘There is pro pably upwards of 6,009 tons pated up there aleady. Several boats are unload: there, but there are no carrying vessels except the above barkantine anda small schooner atthe wharves, the port being entirely bare of — he ship Zephyr is nearly unladen, and has begun to take in ballast. We did not learn her destination The Cumberland Coal Company’s purchase of the canal bouts from the Erie Company has proved to be a very profitable investmen!, most of them having been sold to different parties at from $1,000 to $1,100 each; being a large advance on the price paid by them to the Erie Company. ‘These boats are said to be the best ever seru on the Chesapeake aud Ohio Cynal. being very well and firmly built. Tur AFrRay ON THE GzoRoE Pacr —In the Baltimore Sun of this morning we find the sub- joined deposition of Mr. Wright, sworn to before a Baltimore magistrate : The deposition of W.H DeC. Wright, of Balti- more, in relation to the outrage on board the steamer George Page, from Alexandria to Washington. I was feturning from the White Sulphur Springs with my family, consisting of my wife and two daughters, oue with her infant and nurse and servant, together with my friend, Dr. J. P Thom. Our gage, in all ten trunks, had been checked at Oakland, the present terminus of the railroad, to be delivered, as 1 supposed, at the depot in Washington. ing failed to make the connection with the Baltimore train, Lasked the agent, Latham, (who demanded my check on the boat) who was re- sponsible for my baggage, not wishing to take it toa hotel. He replied that it would be at my own risk. [said asthe promised connection has not been made, that my bagvage ought to be held se- cure by the company. Latham replied, in an in- sulting tone, ** You have not traveled much, or you would know that failures toconnect often oc- eur;’* and continued, ‘* some men have been born who should never have been born.”’ I said, *‘Yes, and you areone of them.”’ Latham then said, “J never have trouble with gentlemen.** I then put myself ina position to strike, and asked if he said I was no gentleman. He did not reply, but ina very loud voice, screamed -+what do you want? what do you want?" (nodoubta signal to assemble his drivers.) at the same time throwing off his coat. Dr. Thom, who was near, sprang on the bag- gage, where we stood, and seeing Latham prepa- ring to strike me, knocked Lim down; some one bebind me, whom I did not see, knocked me down, by a blow back of the ear, and he in turn was knocked down by Dr. ‘Thom. Latham hav- ing again approached was again knocked down by Doctor Thom. They fell together to the deck, when Dr. Thom was seized by the hair by three of Latham’s drivers, who held Lim in a stooping position until Latham, having mounted on the trunks, where be stood about as high as Dr Thom’s bead, kicked bim repeatedly in the face, and thea strack him over the head with asheavy jece of two-inch ouk plank, while Je was thus held. declaring to the engineer of the boat his intention to kill him. Dr. Thom was knocked inseusible. or say out of bis mind, and was then ied into the cabin. and while bleeding profusely f.atham approached with the plank in his hands, and endeavored to get another blow, to finish the work of murder which be had attempted. While Dr. Thom was beid by 3 three men L was heid firmly on iny bac! the baggage by some of his party. Neither Dr. Thom nor my- self were armed, and | deeply regret I am not the Hercules J am represented to be. W.H. DeC. Wricut. Baltimore, September Ist, 1257. Tue Crty Corxcits oF Grorcrtown lately made an appropriation of $1, for the expense of surveying the channel of the Potomac river, from various points at and near Georgetown to the Long Bridge. The Department of the Interior has detailed Prof. Woodruff, of the Topographi- eal Bureau, to perform th rvey. This is now being done under Prof. W .'s superintendence. The data thus acquired, it is presumable, will be laid bejore Congress by the Georgetowners, in connection with the river navigation and bridge projects favored by our neighbors on the other aide of Rock creek. The ew activity dis- played by the Georgetown people in the advance- meat of her interests, should prompt Wasiingto- nians toa litthe wakefulness in respect to home iuterests. Serven Ricnt.—Yesterday afternoon, two young men, H. Duvall aad Wm. Conway, were arrested and taken to the guard house for fighting in the street. Duvall was released on bail fora hearing this morning, but Conway was retained all night. Conway and Duvall, it seems, were walking in company, when the former took oc- casion, in passing a respectable lady, to offer her a gioss insult,‘by placing his hand upon her per- son. Dovall, dixgusted with his companion, ab- ruptly left him, saying he would bave nothing to do'witha man who weuld Insult alady Weeds ensued, and Conway strack Duvall. who returned the blow with compound interest ; knocked Con- way down, and was thrashing him, when they were arrested. Duvall cheerfully paid his fine, and claimed that all decent people would say Le had done right, an expression of opinion which seemed to be in sympathy with the feelings of his sudience Potice —In the Fourth district, yesterday, Chartes McDonald was arrested by Officer Yeat- man for being drunk and disorderly in the street. Correspondence of The Star. Gzorcetown, Sept. 2, 1957. Of all the useless and offensive individuals to be found in any community there is none so much to be loathed, abhorred, and dested as the anony- mous letter writer, especially the author or au thors of some such as have been deposited about the premises of some of our most respectable citizens during the last few days. We have no lesitation in saying that the author of at least one we have seen has no more business outside of penitentiary or some other kind of prison than amole has above ground or a rabid dog to be turned loose in a community. He who could so far degrade his species as to pnt upon paper such foul. rotten, revolting vulgarity, and then place it wbere it would be likely to fall into the hands of the most respectable females, young and old, has pleced himself a degree beyond which we believe it impossible for a demon to go. We regard the highwayman who imbues his hands in his fellows’ blood for the sake of filthy luere, equally as desirable a companion as the anthor of such polluted articles. Such hissing reptiles, who dare not intrude themselves into the presence of decent people, ought to be ex- [ea by kicks and cuits, from every community, lack or white; they are tte f unit to assoei- ate with the very lowest order of pothouse black- guards inthe land. We would inforn those to whom we allude that they are pretty well known, and however industriously they may labor to conceal their ropes forms beneat the hypocritical garb of a fair exterior, a forced easy deportment, that their slimy track bas b discovered, and probably before they are aware of it they may be bearded in their polluted lair, and be exposed to the scoffs and Litter execration of an insulted and outraged community. The following article, from the Cumberland Civilian, shows an unusually encouraging state of affairs upon our canal : “Por the week ending on Saturday last, 11% boats, carrying 13.006 tons of coal, descended the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. This is the largest week’s business ever done upon this work, and is an indication of what may be expected from this improvemen hould it hereafter be kept in navigal ord The total number of boats which i avigation was resumed, i partof July Inst, is 475, carrying 5! j which, at the average per tou—amounts to 072.7? The advertisement of A. L. Army. in another column, offers a rare chance to any person wish- ing to engaye in the confectionery business. ‘This stand is one of the oldest and most popular in the Distriet. and has always enjoyed a very liberal and profitable patronage ; and probably the ocen- pants have suffered less in the way of bad debts than those of any other extensive establishment of a similar character in the District.
