The Board then adjourned. Tue River.—On the river this morning the air was so clear that persons could be seen dis- tinetly on the wharves at Alexandria from the Washington wharves. The opposite shore of the river seemed scarcely more than a stone’s throw. distant. It was a glorious morning for boating and excursions. An investigation of the late difficulty on board the e was commenced yesterday after- noon at ol of the Orange and-Alexandria Railroad Company, and several witnesses were examined; but, owing to the absence of Mr. Bar- bour, president of the company, in the interior of Virginia, the further action of the Board is post- poned uptil his return, which will be some day this week. From the lower river we have most satisfactory reports of the corn and other crops. The little wilt e of Evansville, Va, situated on the Poto- mac, eee eceane Chopawamsic creeks, which was settled in the early part of last Spring, mostly by Pennsylvanians, is in a flourishing condition. There are now about thirty permanent settlers, and preparations are being consummated for a large increase of population during this Fail; new stores and dwelling honses are going up, a id barns and machine shops are being constructed; everything about the place indicates enterprise and prosperily. The people intend making Evans- ville a lumber and live-stock market A saw-mill bas already been erected. which daily turns out large quantities of excellent oak timber. The company has built a wharf, which terminates in ten feet water ut low tide, and a daily mail is supplied from there to Dumfries. r. John Pettibone nes Hat completed a con- tract with the Cumberland Coal and Iron Com- pany for three thousand tons of coal for the Rich- mond steamboats. The coal is daily being trans- pons to Mattingly’s wharf, in boats from Alex- andria. The steamer Mount Vernon tries her engine to- day. She will be inspected on next ‘Thursday. Since the repairs on her, she is in all respects the best boat on the river. Yesterday, at Page’s wharf,a man with a large- sized piece of baked clay in his ‘ tile,” under- took to terminate his life by walking the plank from the end of the slip at the wha He tried it on, but the water was very cold, as he after- wards affirmed, and he changed his mind about dying just then, and called justily for assistance which attracted the attention of by-standers, and he was rescued. Owing to the prevailing calm in the river there were no arrivals at our wharves, or at Alexandria yesterday, worthy of notice. To-day the barge Custis took the members of the Sixth Presbyterian Church Choir and Sab- bath School on an excursion to the Fort. The exercises of the day there will be varied. Two young men, F. Marion Bradley an Cookman Hutchins, will deliver speeches. ‘The Collyer made her regular trip to Mount Vernon, to-day, with not less that 125 Passengers, most of them sirangers. There is some talk of a new fron steam reek boat, to run from the foot of Seventh street to Al- exandria, tobe commanded by Capt. Job Corson, late commander of the steamer Geo. Washington. THE ELEMENTS seemed to have conspired yes- terday to make things agreeable for the Orphe- ons and their friends, on their trip to the White fiouse. One of the §nest be of the season was succeeded by a lovely moonlight night, in which it was a luxury to be upon the Water, and most sseeceny, when there was the accompaniment of delicious music. At the White House the exercises were of a va- ried character—dancing, instrumental and vocal music, and the usual long-shore diversions of swinging, bowling, promenading, fishing, and shell-hunting But, the feature of the day was the fine vocali- zation of the Quartette, an ainateur band of whose excellence much has been whispered, but little positively known outside of their home circles he delight of their larger audience of yesterday was evinced by a demand for repetition of pieces, which, though most complin: utary tothe youth- ful performers, must have been a severe tax upon their lungs. In harmony and in exquisite modulation, essen- tials in Quartette singing, the company excelled. We trust the Orpheons may be induced to give the Washington public a taste of their quality at Carusi’s Saloon or Odd Fellows’ Hall, or some eligible place. A beautiful ballad, composed bj Mr. W. E Morgan of the Quartette, and sung yesterday, is destined to have a run. Metzerott, we believe, has it for sale. In the course of the evening, Messrs. Dubant and Howard of this city xang some capitat songs in response toa ‘loud eall’? from their friends ‘The interindes were agreeably occupied with dancing to the music of Arth’s band. The order for grading and graveling Missouri avenue, from Four-and-a-balf to Sixth street, has been issned. Hons of the city will look upon their execution With satisfaction. Camp Meetincs.—The Methodist camp meet- ting at Rockville, Montgomery county, has broken up after an interesting season of one week, in which some seventy-five souls were converted. The meeting was presided over by Rev. John Lanahan, and the services of the occasion were participated in by several clergymen of this city among whom was Rev. Dr. Hough of the Capito! {Methodist Church, Rev. 5 bney Ball of cKendree station, Rev. — Rodgers of First Ward Union Chapel, Rev. samuel Register of the Foundry Church, and several other gentlemen from different country stations. The meetin was, from all accounts, most satisfactory to a! concerned. The night mectings in the various camps were in all instances kept up toa late hour, and on Thursday night last the meeting in the MeKendree Tent was continued up to 2o’clock inthe morning. The spot chosen for the camp was an excellent one, and the tents presented the appearance of a camp-ground of an army. There Were some hundred and twenty tents pitched, and the order which prevailed was generally good. The company broke up on Friday morning last with many regrets at parting.
