LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Navy Yaup Matters —A long and much-needed improvement has at length been begun, and is being prosecuted towards compte- tion inside the yard—namely, the extension of the eastern wall from its present terminus tothe Enst- ern Branch channel. The workmen enzaged in she execution of the work are ariving the ie | setting the caps for the extended jon he wall. A good part of the foundation has already been laid, aml some two-thirds of the ‘hat portion of the yard left piles are driven. T po aa exposed so loag will be shortly enclosed and se- cure, The old steam-engine house, on East Dock, has been moved over near the Ordnance department, to be used as astore room for cement, lime, and other ordnance stores. After the fim had been subdued the firemen were munifi- <eutly treated to refreshmeats by Dr. Dove, Capt. “mith, Thorias Champion, Francis Jenkins, and others, who vied with each other in demonstra- ting their gratitude to the hardy tiremen. Mr. John Baltimore, a watchman iuside the Navy Yard, by his single-handed efforts, on the first discovery of the tire, sneceeded in saving the tives of all the family of Mr. Warner, who lived in a part of the house. All the members of Mr. Warner's family are very deaf, and woald inev- ‘ably have perished in the nes, but for the uobte conduct of Mr. B who beat down the door, snd Succeeded i: urousing them just in tlae to ut roof. ard mechanics are anxiously wait- isposition of the new sloops-of- ar, for the bu ng of which Congress last year made a heavy appropriation. The committee keep dark, but the hope is strong among the men that the building of one of the said sloops will be assigned to ihe Washington Navy Yard. We hope they will yet what they desire, for there are no better ship carpenters or machinists than can be found any day in our Navy Yard. ‘Taz River.—The steam-tugs Guy and Wide Awnke yestarday towed »p to the mouth of the canal two large schooners from Port Deposite, loaded with lumber for our canal dealers. Abroad tf are par excel- ence, recognized at the head of the profession, and sought for, naturally, in the same way that we would look toa French cook for a good din- ner, toan Italian fore good mpm 2 toa German for good lager bier, to an Englishman for good roast beef, and an Irishman for Toast pota- tocs—which the latter unfortunately cannot pro- cure. Butit is melancholy tg reficct that the American disease of over ape teat to business, among other causes, is indirectly sapping our health in this respect, as well as others. A wri- ter in the Tribune truthfully remarks : ‘ Unquestionably, the strength and soundness of the teeth of the Americans are below those of Buropeans. We do not claim any immaculate ex- celleace for those of the latter, but compared with the former, they are better. If there were any proof wanting to verify this Proposition, it would be found in the proverbiel excellence of Armeérican denfists. Here, first the profession was fully connected with the stutly of medicine and surgery, and the beantiful mystery of arrest- ing the decay of the ivory portals of tue stomach recocnized as a speciality ofsurgery. The cause of the eee American teeth, and the means of giving them due strength, should occu- py the attention of every parent, and every one whose age has placed him beyond parents care.
