Grorcrtown, Augnst 27, 1857. ‘The march of publte and private improvement is almost everywhere visible in the northern por- tion of onr city. Many of the streets in that lo- cality, where rude Nature bad never been dis- turbed, have recently been pretty thoroughly im- proved. and are now in a fair wav soon to become | pr thoronghfares. Quite a spirit of public improvement, we learn, is also ‘being aroused among those of our citizens living near the ex- treme end of High street, and that they have it in contemplation, ere long. to petition the Corpora- tion to grade, yravel, curb, and gutter that pore tion of High st-ret tying between Road street and the hill near the poor and workhouse. ‘This is certainly a very desirable and necessary improve- ment, aud one that should have been made long since. We confess that we never could see any good reason for taxing the lower or southern por- tion of this street to the full amount by the Charter for its improvement (as well as all other streets of the tuwn) and leave the valuable property on each side between the points above hated to go scot free, by the Corporation paying for its repair, &c. out of the general fund. Pub- lie interest and convenience require that this ith- rovement should be made, and that right speed- ty Vv. in the before-mentioned part of the town many rp hla im provements in the way of dwellings are being made.
