Everything about the management of the farm gives evidence of thrifty industry on the part of ail concerned; and the Inteadant is an hourly visitor to the rooms of the house inmates, aud watches over them with the solicitude of a parent. The affairs of the Asylum could not be under more industrious and economical officers than Mr. Queen and his skil- ful assistant, Mr. King. Taz Lieut Iveantry Committee of Arrange- ments are stirring about “ fixing things”? for the excursion to Norfolk‘@n Friday; and meantime there is a general buzz of preparation about town on the part of those designing to participate in this pool pleasant affair? In fact, as long as the Infantry exists as a company it has only to an- nounce a ball or excursion to set ever yon the qué vive, and to secure a full attet This the members may count on for all coming time. Toour Norfolk and Portsmouth friends we can commend the Infantry as accomplished gentle- men, as weil as gallant soldiers. A Swat, Cuampacne Party.—The house on P street, formerly occupied by the Hon. John Quincy Adams, is being put in repair by the Present owner, Mr. Johnson, and the house is in charge of the contractor, Mr. Henderson, who, when the workmen are not engaged upon it, locks itand keeps the keys. Yesterday, while the house was locked during the temporary absence of the workmen, those notorious individuals, John Doe and Richard Roe, foreed an entrance to the build- ing, and getting in the wine cellar, decided to the day in aretired, quiet champagne drink- ng, without songs or toasts. The happy pair indulged so freely that they got too drunk to move, end im that condition were found and taken before Justice’Smith, who committed them both to jail for house-breaking. Tue Hoc Law.—The police officers were ou early this morning enforcing the law to prevent swine from going at large. ‘The operations this morning were in the Third district. The west wing of the City Hall is usually filled with own- ers of hogs—all wanting aword with his honor the Mayor, and all about the taking of their hogs. ‘To-day it is probable the applications for hogs taken by the police will increase. Suarxs atuntisually plentifal this year. The Southern rivers connecting with the Gulf are full ofthem. One of these monsters was taken in the Alabama the other day, weighing 160 pounds. As the time Is rapidly approaching when school teachers generally will have to resume their la- bors in “teaching young ideas how to shoot,” it may not be out of place for us to call theuttention of the readers of the Star, both at home and abroad, to the superior facilities which are offered by the various institutions of learning in our cit for the education of children, male or female, an: te the excellent opportunity now offered to an competent conductor of a first-class female sem/{- nary to secure an institution of the kind, which has for many years ranked high as one well wor- thy the patronage of the public. By reference to another column, it will be seen that the extensive buildings situated on Washington street, in one of the most beautiful and healthy parts of our city, and for many years occupied by Miss Lydia English as a seminary, is for sale or rent. For many years this was one of the most prosperous and popular establishments of the kind in this section of country; and we believe that all that is necessary to render it such again, is a competent corps of teachers who will, with proper et 2 line, devote themselves to their business. The location 1s certainly an excellent one, being ele- vated and healthy, and supplied with ample rounds, well shaded, for recreation, to say noth- ng of the extensive and well-ada buildings. The duties of the Mathematical and Classical Academy of Mr. P. A. Bowen will be resumed onthe 7th of September. Of the character for efficiency and usefulness of this institution we need say erm D Mr. Bowen's unprecedented success as a teacher of youth, and the almost un- bounded popularity of his academy is a sufficient recommendation guarantee to those who may intrust him with the education of their sons, that no pains will be spared to properly cultivate both thelr minds and morals. Clinton Academy, formerly under the direction of the Rev. T. W. Simpson, will also be o on the 7th of unber. This heretofore very ular school has been taken by Mr. Geo: rnold, M.A. This leman is from Balti. more, where he has for several years been en- in the instruction of youth, in connection with one of the most efficient teachers in that city, Mr. J. A. Morgan, principal of the Light Street Institute. Hecomes among us with the strongest kind of recommendations, both at home and from elsewhere. Parents desirous of securing the ser- vices of a first-rate teacher for their sons will do weil to examine his circulars and advertisement in another column. The duties of Mrs. Gen. Wheeler's Montgomery Street Academy for young ladies wiil be resumed on Tuesday, September Ist. Mrs. Wheeler has for a number years been engayed in our city asa female iustructress, and thus far, we believe, has given universal satisfaction. Her academy is situated in a very cate and healthy part of the city and well supplied with grounds for recre- ation. There, too, parents may rest assured that no pains will be spared to train up theirdaughters in the Bete d that they should go, as well as to thoroug bly cultivate their intellects. There are other institutions which we may take occasion to notice hereafter. From indications there is no stint for corn along the line of the canal. Nearly ever since the re- sumption of navigation it has been pouring in, most of which is eae | shipped for northern and eastern ports. ‘The urticle has slightly declined, and is now selling at S0c. Quite a number of our Methodist friends are making preparations to attend the camp-meeting which cominences near Colesville, in ontgom- ery county, to-morrow. As no company tent will be taken from here, they will unite with their friends from Washington. A number of others have already left for the camp at Warrenton, Va.
