LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Tux Rivex.—Two lumber schooners from Port Deposite came up to the mouth of the Tiber yesterday, and eighteen long-boats loaded with sand for the government. Since the repairs on the bridge have been per- fected, the travel over the river has increased wonderfully; the rdeners of the contiguous counties of Mexandria and Fairfax are rushing their zarden truck to the Washington market, where they can always command a much higher price than at any other place. The blackberry season is at its height; hundreds of our citizens go over the bridge almost heurly th h the day im quest of this anti-dysentery fruit. {t has been many years since the blackberries have been so plentiful as this season. There is no end tothem, and they are selling in our market as low as six cents per quart The scene on the river at the bridge yesterday was a lively one; some fifteen of the sail-boat owners were cavorting about in the river in fine style, testing the sailing qualities of their pet boats. The «Lady Gay Spanker,”’ well known to our boat-sporting community, was out in perfect rig; and, as uswal, bore off the balm over all com- potters, several Philadelphia and other northern milt beats, which were on the river, to the con- trary notwithstanding. Arrived at Riley’s wharf, schr. Mathew, from Philadelphia, with 106 tons of coal for P. W. Riley ; ee sehr. Lucre. from magni po: with 85 tons of coal for Messrs. Rouchat and Caldwell. The steamer Columbia arrived from Baltimore yesterday evening, bringing, besides a large num- her of passengers, a considerable quantity of mer- chandize for our city merchants. At Magruder & Stone's wharf, arrived schr. Fairleader, from Philadelphia, with 72 tons of coal for Messrs. Magruder & Stone; schr. &. B. Jones, from Havre de Grace, with 100 tons of ¢ al for Warder & Kilman. The Ann D. Mott (Bedell line) came up to the wharf yesterday morning from Alexandria. where ahe arrived on Friday evening last. She brings for bur city and Georgetown the following con- signments : For Messrs. Serron, Mayor & Knapp, 5 cases mdze; Campbell! & Coyle, 2 bdls steel. 3 tons iron, 5 kegs nails; W F Bayly, 10bdls binders’ boards; J B Wilson, 15 bxs starch; J W Thompson. 3 bxs and 2 iron frames; Capt M C Meigs, 3 bxs marble; Geo & Thos Parker & Co..5 =— bottles, 10 qr casks wine, | cask oil, 20 bxs and 61 pkgs mdze. 2 pipes gin, 100 bxs herring; M G Emery, 40 bxs mdze; Wm L Landers, & is willow; J C Hil- yard, 6 bxs; Jonas P Lev casks porte; Wm MeL. It is also stated. how truthfally we know not, that the Orange and Alexandria Railroad Company have made arrangements with Hugh Latham to transport the Southern mail to and from Wash- ington and Alexandria for $3,000 a year. ‘The excursion of the Jolly Rover Club to the W bite House comes off to-day, per steamer Wash- ingtou, Capt. Corson It was estimated that the cost of getting the ship Zephyr off from the Kettie Bottoms would be from mM) to $1,500. This statement was consider- wide of the mark, it having only cost some s- to accomplish the work. Capt. King ex- presses much satisfaction at the performances of the steam-tug -‘ Guy,”’ Capt. Bowen, in getting the Zephyr otf from her gronndings Capt. B- states from his knowledge of the river that he would have no hesitation in bringing up the river vessels drawing 22 feet of water. The cause of the Zephyr having run aground is said to be this: It seems that some two yearsago, Mr. Butler, su- rintendent of river buoys, was ordered to put own new spar and cam buoys at the Kettle Bot- toms. This he did, but they were not placed in the same position occupied bythe old ones. The Pilot of the Zephyr not being aware of this fact shaped her course as he supposed by the old buoys, and the consequence was ax heretofore stated. The shifting of the buoys has cost the owners of the Zephyr a pretty sum We notice the new boats of the canal company on the ways at Alexandria, being cut down in or- der to get them through the canal locks. The fact that the fifth dam has finally been repaired has drawn a large number of northern vessels to the coal wharves. At Alexandria business thereabouts will soon assume a lively aspect. It is expected that boats from the imines will beyin to arrive after to-day. Bap Lopsixes.—This morning a number of colored persons were brought up before Justice Goddard at the Guard-house, on a charge of gambling, and the following conversation occur- red: Justice. Well, boys, how many of you belong to church ? Batler. I reckon I'm the only one, sir. Justice. You belong to the ‘ Asbury,” don't you? " Butler. No, sir, I belong to the ‘hig Bethel”? Justice. The boys went to work to pay the costs and get away from those lodgings as soon as possible. Mesic 1s Common ScuooLs.—The ‘Report on Masie in the Public Schools’ oftered to the Bos- ton Committee lately is strongly in favor of music asa branch of regular study in common schools. It urges, however, that the full advantage of such intreduction can only be reaped, and the exper ment can only be crowned with complete su cess. when instruction shall be given in that de- partment by the regular teacher of the school report does not advocate any change, on this account, in the corps of teachers at present present ¢ ed in the public schoois in that city, out recommends that. hereafter, in deciding upon the qualitications ofa candidate, the relative pro- ficiency of each in music should be taken in count, and insisted upon on the part of the Com- Tue Pesric Senoors.—To-day at three o'clock, the premiums will be awarded to the First Distriey schools, at the Smithsonian Institution. Williams alias Bill Monkey, colored, was arrested this morning by three col- ored men for stealing a silver watch from Robert Bates, colored. Bill, after stealing the watch, sold it toa woman, ‘tis said. But Bill, with his usual cunning, related the manner of stealing the watch, and endeavored to throw a xtigma upon the character of Bates. Justice Clark committed him fora further hearing, and he was taken to jail by officer Fanning. Bill Monkey was discharged by the Criminal Court in a case of larceny a few days ago. He was charged with stealing razors, and it was proven that he stole the cases, though it was not shown that the razors were in them More ABREsts oF Evecrion Rioters —Last ynight. Wm. Coxrirmation anv Consecration at Sr. Many’s (German) Catmotic Cuvecn.—Yester- day morning at 10 o'clock, at the above church, was confirmed by the Right Rev. Archbishop Kenrick, of Baltimore, Persons. The can- didates for admission to church met at the 8c room contiguous to the church, and marched in ion to the house of the pastor of the parish, Rev. Mathias Alig, where the: ‘were met by the Rev. Archbishop, who preced them into the church where the solemn rites of the church were administered. After this, high mass was celebrated by the Rev. Father Rokfort, of the Georgetown Jesuits’ Society. The officia- ding priests who icipated in the ceremonies ‘were Archbishop Kenrick, Rev. Father Rokfort, Rev. M. Ae eae and Rev Father Powtoski. ‘The sermon following was delivered by the Rev. Archbishop, who addressed his large audience carnestly and faithfully upon the obligations due by them to the Church and to the Most High At two o’tlock, p. m ,a bell, cast by Messrs Webster and Register, of Baltimore, was blessed to be used for Divine service hy St. Mary’s Church A coon of German Catholics was present who participated in the musical observ- ances of the occasion in unison with a portion of the Marine Band. After the consecration, the Rev. Arehbishop preached, giving some explanation of the cere- monies of the Catholic Church, on this occasion. In the consecration of this bell, he said that it had been dedicated to God; that the faithful, by its tones, were called, and reminded of the ser- vice which they owe to God, and of their own obligations concerning the ‘salvation of their souls. He said that Yells are used in case of dan- xer from that great scourge, fire, to call assist- ance to prevent the loss of temporary goods from its ravages; but this bell, after its consecration, would be used to call the people to the remem- brance of the final judgment of the most high tiod; and in this sense, when they heard its sol- emn peals, they must regard it as the voice of God calling them to his service. ENTERTAINMENTS ANEAD.—There seems tobe no manner of doubt that the Columbia Lodge excursion on the 4th of August will be the most largely attended one that ever left this city. But this need not deter any one from deciding to goon it, as the committee have a look ahead for contin- gencies, and will see that the most ample accom- modations are afforded to all who wish to partici- pate in this agreeable affair. It was announced at Grace Church (Island) yes- terday that the Promised moonlight excursion of that church will take place on the 7th of August, when another pleasant time ma be counted on. The pee party and pie-nfe under the aus- ices of the Young holic’s Friends Society of Washington, will be held in the beautiful grounds of Georgetown College on Monday, the 3d of Au- gust. A glance at the advertisement will show the tempting nature of this entertainment. Disonvperty Beravior.—On Saturday night and Sunday complaints were made of young men tnd boys congregating in various streets and alleys, and behaving in a manner calculated to disturh and annoy the neighborhoods, One de- n to the guards as ‘! Shirt-tail alley,” was especially complained of, the party misbehaving escaping arrest because the guards were not on ‘duty at the time complained of. The- atre alley was also complained of. and attracted some attention from the police. The police and guards are often called upon to visit these places, a on Saturday and Sunday nights. Many Who have been arrested on these complaints have been let go on their promise to ‘sin no more ;”* bnt as they do not appear to keep faith, the officers seem determined to try what etfect a legal appeal to the pockets of offenders will have in future. DrowNep.—We hear that acitizen of Washing- ton, Mr. Echings, was drowned yesterday or the day before, in the pond of Blagden’s Mill, on Rock Creek, a few miles north of the city. He was fishing in a boat, and was called to dinner at the house of his father-in-law, Mr. Bond, the miller. He answered the cail,’ but not coming afterwards a second messenger was sent for him and his boat was found empty. Subsequently his body was recovered and found to be bruised about the head as though injured by a fall out of the boat—perhaps in a fit. A Navouty Sattor.—A sailor named Pauldir was arrested in Philadelphia on Friday last ona charge of a bigamy. He was taken before Alder- man Enue, when Lizzie Paulding was examined, and testified that she was married to William on the 6th of June by the Rev. Dr. Coleman, and that about ten days ago he was married to a cer- tain Hannah Jacobs by Alderman Binder. After the first marriage he took his wife to Washington and obtained a situation in the navy-yard. He did not remain long, but returned to Philadel- phia, and, it is alleged, contracted the second snarriage. The case was laid over for a further hearing. Tus Mosquitors.—Jonn Alexander, upholster- er and paperhanger, Pennsyivania avenue, be- tween 12th and 13th streets, on Saturday, secured another lot of those mosquito-proof canopies for low post or French bedsteads, which we took oc- casion to commend not long since. Nothing can be better suited to the times. Everybody should possess one, who desires undisturbed sleep in these days.
