Mr. Mi- rick’s school, examined the class in grammar; Mr Henr a in written arithmetic; the z. Mirick a Urges and Hing; Mr. ardy in geography and history; Mr. Norton in oral arithmetic. In grammar a fine examination was passed, as also in arithmetic, but as the answers weregiven in the mass it was not easy to distinguish the proticieney of individual pupils; and, indeed, the time allotted would not have permitted such ex- amination; and as there was no scholarship to be awarded this year, such test wa? not requisite. In veeew ‘was not easy to ascertain the ficiency of the pupils. in consequence of the de- fective acoustics of the room, whereby the words were lost in echoes. in the spelling exercises no little interes’ was created in consequence of a question arising as to the correctness of the result of the first trial, and to insure perfeet fairness in the test trial, the boys were separated; and, with slate and pencil in hand, were required to write out the words given to them, and afterward submit their slates to the exXamiaets As a matter of some interest we give the per ve based on the actual results in both cases. This machine, whieh has been experiment- ed with by stone masons for so many years, and has been frequently abandoned as use! on ac- count of the great danger attending its use, has been so improved and strengthened, as to render it not only of great service in point of labor-sav- ing, but it can, as arranged by Messrs. Provest & nter, be put toall the uses required in the erec- tion of the corridors, with safety to those employed in working it. The amount of hard labor saved to oe ae by its introduction is very great; wi four men to manage it, the lifting machine performs the same ‘ammount ser- vice in one day that would be accomplished by nine men in six days with the peace ice boom derrick. It is calculated to lift fifteen tons weight, with the greatest ease, and can be shifted from one side to the other, almost in a moment, cropping the stone jn whatever ‘ition may be required. The machine is a double railway sus- from the contignous sides of the old ilding and the new wing with a rail track at each end of the machine or bridge; this bridge is braced up with large iron rods which run un- der its entire length from its two extremities, and the whole bridge moves bodily anne the two tracks to any point @equired; upon this bridge, over which ruus a transverse rail track, isa little car, which attaches to the hoisting power, and carries the stone as it is hoisted back or forth as may be required. Sixtu District Poricr Matrers.+Before Justice Cull.—Mrs. Susannah Armstead was brought up, charged with oppressive conduct to- wards one of her tenants, a poor woman, named Mahorney. It seems that the landlady, finding that the tenant was unable to pay Ler rent, under- took to apply the law of forcible ejection with undue rigor ; when brought - before his honor she used considerable abusive language towards the oificers, for which she was held to bail on her own recoznizance to appear at the next term of the Criminal Court. James Gleason was called up to answer for cer- tain threatening and abusive language towards Mr. Jared Fagitt, all of which grew out of across dog having bitten said Fngitt without provoca- tion. Tue River.—The Powhatan reports the ship Zephyr not in sight when she left Aquia creek, at 1 o'clock last night. ‘The boys still persist in going into the river to bathe, in full view of passenzers on the river, with an indecent pertinacity which should be se- verely punished by our police. EXceRston OF THE NATIONAL Guarnps —We have heard nothing but expressions of delight on the part of those who had the good fortune to participate in the excursion of the National Guards at Blakistone’s Island. The Powhatan reached the Pavilion at about three o'clock Wednesday afternoon, aud the ex- cursionists were kindly received by Col. Blakis- tone, who threw open the dancing saloon for their use, and in other ways catered for the enjoyment of the party. The young folks of the neighbor- hood paiticipated with the Washingto: the merry dance, and many pleasant acq' anceships were formed. Deputy Marshal Manly and detective Barnes at once repaired to the Camden station, but the party described did not leave the train on its arrival. A short time after, however, a party approached an- other and handed hima note, when the latter pro- cured a hack and started down town. ‘The officers followed. and at the corner of Lombard and High streets the vehicle stopped, when a inan answer- ing the description contained jn the dispatch made his appearance on the street and was about to enter the back. The oificers arrested and took him to the aiddle district station, wheuce he was seut to jail to await a requisition from the author- ities of the District of Columbia. A CoincipENce.— Yesterday afternoon, pre- cisely at the hour when all newspaper men are the hungriest and thirstiest, lo, there appeared at our sanctum door a man staggering under a gigantic waiter loaded with the biggest and juciest of Norfolk oysters, with extras, trimmings, and ‘other things accordin’,*’ all fresh from ourcon- siderate friend Simpson, corner of 10th street and the avenue. W hile we were contemplating their rich beauty, With fork elevated, preparatory to impaling a big ‘un, atrundling nojse was heard in the passage, and presently was seen approaching by its mo- mentum, a cask of Lager, the unapproachable brewing of Humphreys & Juneman. Think of it, reader—such eutables and such drinkables in conjunction! But this was not all, for directly there ap- roached another messenger, bearing an immense ceezer filled with delicious strawberry-davored ice creain from Schaftield, 386 Sixth street. Section 4 makes the officer, in case of refusal to perform the duty, eogeg toa fine of not less than a nor more than 0. ‘Twenty-three fine hogs were taken to the Asy- lum, on Wednesday morning, from the Fifth and Sixth districts. Patent Orrick Extenston.—The work on the west wing of this building is being carried on with great rapidity ; workmen are busily engaged in putting the finishing strokes to the main por- tico, which it is expected will be done by theend of this month. Messrs. Berry & Mohun, contractors for the granite work about the building, are engaged in erecting the grand stairway of this wing, which they expect to finish in about three weeks. This stairway is of granite, and is coustructed on the self-supporting plan, having no perceptible sus- taining power ; the stairway follows the angle of the wall, and each platform or landing is so con- structed as to form a circle on its inner converge presenting a curious and harmonious effect to the eye. "The Messrs. Berry & Mohun may well be proud of this stairway, which ts an object of admiration to all who have examined it. “I'he work on the north front is progressing with proper dispatch. The sub-busement will be finished by next Christmas, so that the marble walls may be com- nyenced at the opening of the working season next pills Great care has been taken to make the foundations strong and durable.
