Mg WASHINGTON, D. C., FRIDAY, JULY 10, 1857. ———$_——— Star. Eben VOL. X. THE FASHIONS. [Cok spondence of N.Y. Journal of Commerce.) Paris, June 22, 1857. A | Sdeer movement has been given to all branches of industry by the crowds of strangers who have been attracted to Paris by the fetes given in honor of the Royal visiters who have succeeded each other in the Palace of the Tuil- jeries, and by the opening of the exhibition of paintings of living artists. The windows of the fancy shops display an annual assortment of at- tractive objects of taste, to tempt the strangers. Milliners and mantua-makers have heen busily employed in inventing new modes for the din- uers at the Tuiileries, and the receptions at St. Cloud.~ T have seen some pretty novelties in the show rooms of Madame Fuueet,4 Rue du Menars, destined for the evening cntertain- ments at the fashionable watering places, of which the description may be acceptable to your fair readers. For young ladies there are white tarlatan dresses with five or six tlounces, upon which are placed a very open blonde, through the holes of which are threaded very narrow cherry velvets. Others have three skirts trimmed in a similar manner above the hems, the eerise velvet being replaeed by narrow white satin ribbon, and the upper skirt looped up atthe sides by two large white satin ro- settes. Tarlatan is very much worn ; it is seen in all colors, either plain. or with flounces a /ispositton. Patterns in application of velvet, on tarlatan dresses, have a very good effect. The bodies are accompanied by berthes, orna mented with the same style of application, but in smaller patterns. Sometimes veivet berthes are worn with long ends crossing infront. Crape and tulle robes for young married ladies, are made with puffed flounces ; these flounces are en covered by others of white or black lace, «i fastened at intervals by agrafes of ribbons. The sleeves are short, puffed and covered with lace ; the corsage is draped and trimmed with lace. The Empress-sash isa favorite ornament ball dresses. Walking and home dresses are generally high-bedied, and may have eith. - round waists or lappels. The favorite trimusug is pyramids up the sides, or flounces. The double skirts are also much worn in all materials, and trimmed up the sides either with bands of velvet or pas- sementerie ornaments mixed with pendant but- tons. On the grey tissues, which are so fash- ionable for ha! Ftoviotte, there are bands of vel- vet up the sides, between rows of large buttons of the same, or else bias pieces checked with the same colors as the dress, but of a larger pattern. ‘The sleeves are composed of two deep tlounces cut bias, sewed on flat and spreading out very much at the edge. There is a new style sleeve which is very pretty and very appropriate for the season; they are cut square ia the straight way of the stuff, and are open from the shoulder down; they fall only a little way below the el- bow, and are supported by a very full puffed under-sleeve, the only trimming being a border ot velvet or ribbon turned over the edge. For dishabille, whether in town or country, we sce “a great many matinees (breakfast dress) of quilting, dimity or nankeen. The skirts are ornamented at the sides with cotton braids, turming fanctful patterns. The jacket, which forms the body, should be longer than basques ot an ordinary walking robe; it must be border- ed with galloon and braided to match the skirt. Un each side are pockets, such as on gentlemen's paletots. The sleeves are either closed or slit up, and the edges laced together with braid. Among the elegant creations of Madame Al- phonsine, 12 Rue du Helder, are the full-dress erape and rice straw bonnets. The latter is composed of a width of straw with a yellow silk piping im the middle. The sides of the crown have enother row with a piping at the edge of the front. The top of the erown is flat, bordered with piping. On one side is a humming bird, with two very light birds of Paradize—wings ot arich yellow, which deepens toward the bottom. e edge of the front and the curtain is a delieate vandyked blonde. Under the front there is a tuft of butter-cups; a bandeau of Tice-straw with a piping passes above the ban- deau, and the cap is of blonde. Crape bon- uvts have a silk border of two shades, covered ty a deep blonde forming a fall in front. At the side there is a tuft of cocks’ feathers, fas- tened by « large bow of blonde which ad- vances a little on the front. Drawn crape bon- nets have crape trimming fastened by a bow; vn the outside a buneh of flowers; the trim- mings inside to mateh. Rice straws have also Lionde and tulle insertions between the rows of straw. With this the favorite trimming consists of light branches of foliage placed on the in- sertions and hanging down the sides. The front forms a point on the forehead and stands off at the sides. The new desizn of ornament for the head. consisting of an elastic aigrette, light and pliable as an ostrich feather, and yet entirely composed of diamonds in transparent setting, belongs to Sarrazin, 19 Boulevard St. Denis, und was first worn Ly the Empress at the State reception of the Persian Embassador. The celebrated manufacturer of pocket-hand- kerchiefs, Chaperon, Rue de la Paix, has pro- duced for the summer morning toilette, novel- ties in the form of handkerchiefs, embroidered in colors of a very peculiar description. The color of the embroidery must match that of the robe. This smal! but important article has be- come & most extravagant item in female attire. The richest and costliest work is lavished on the handkerchief. The coat of arms and the crown of the titled owner are embroidered with great care in theecorner. Deep and gorgeous Isees are the trimmings employed for the full dress mouchotr. +e - Mr. Marcy's Last Portrait.—Mr. Marey appears to have died from disease of the heart. ite was not of an a ectic habit, and the sud- denness of his im ad the heart ceasing to beat, while be was lyingon his couch reading a book, which dropped upon his breast as he expired— together with the naturalness of his expression nnd absence of distortion in his features, coun- tenances this supposition.
