LOCAL INTELLIGENCB. Pescic Scuoot Examtnations.— Yesterday atiernoon we had the pleasure of being present at the examination of Primary school, Setond district, Male department; Mrs. R. M. Ogden instructress. ‘The examination was condueted by Messrs. and Polk, trustees, assisted by Mr. John B- Thompson, principal of the Fourt distriet school. The school-room was crowded to excess with visiters; parents, teactiers, and a jarge number of strangers, among whom we no- ticed Mr. Hyde, trustee of Public schools in Georgetown, as well as several lady teachers from thattown. ‘This school ranks among the first of its class in the city. At the examination of yes- terday the pupils were, we think, put through a harder drill of questioning than we have pre- viously wit . But the boys were prompt and up to the mark on every interrogation. The spell- jug was good, the reading very , asalso the writing and mental arithmetic. In the latter they were examined by Mr. J. E. Thompson, himself an adept in that branch, and he, after a severe re- view, as far tig thyas gone in their lessons, ac- knowledged that he could not catch the pupils at fault ; and he certainly did put a good many posers, which would have staggered older per- sons After theexamination, Mr. Magruder infrodu- ced Mr. Hyde of Georgetown, who addressed the boys in a very happy manner, expressing his yreat gratification at the examination just passed by the school, and congratulated the pupils on having so excellent a teacher. Male Primary School No. 4, Mr. A. Edson, teacher. This school was examined yesterday by Mr. Z. Richards of the Union Academy, and Mr. Henshaw, teactier in the Third District. The school exhibited proficiency, good training and xood order, much to the credit of their teacher who has evidently done his duty faithfally and successfully. This schoo! has some sixty boys from eight to fourteen years of age. A correspond- ent expresses regret that more of the municipal authorities were present at this examination, and says: “ Let not our — fathers be astonished not only the teachers of such schools become heatened and uninterested in their work, but even the boys themselves lose their regard for both sebcol, and school oifficers.’’ Tre River.—In the absence of any thing more profitable in the way of business at the Long Bridge, the boys are turning their attention to ecl trapping. Last night a trap was set at the wharf, made of an empty barrel, so constructed that their page a after entering the trap in quest of the bait find themselves unable to take the back track, and in this manner the barrel becomes sometimes filled with the slippery, snakish look- ing varmints. The barrel this morning contained between two and three hundred of them, who were placed in a half hogshead, and sprinkled with » which has the same effect on their ten- der skins that fire would have, and very soon kills them. The mud machine from Philadelphia. which has been lately cleaning out the docks at George- town, came down to the wharf of Messrs. Magru- der & Stone this morning, where she has been set to work to deepen the water thereabouts. This machine works much faster than anything of the kind we have yet seen, carrying about three loads to one of the machine now working in the city canal. It is much longer, and has a more power- ful engine, and the loads of mud are towed otto the flats by the screw tug Conestoga, which fa- cilitates the dredging operations gieatly. To-day the steamer George Washington goes to Mount Vernon on her regular trip. A large number of passengers were awaiting the arrival of the boat when we left the wharf. No, Stm-zz! No, Maam-eEr'—The Auxiliary Guards are pothered now and then, by the funni- est demands for the performance of acts outside the programme of the A. G.'s official duties. Thus, a husband wants the officer to hunt up his wife, who ‘‘has left her bed and board;’* or a wife who demands that he shall go and bring her husband from this or that house on ——— street. She knows he is im there, ‘and he ain’t got no right there, neither,” and she wants him to come bome. Mr. A. B. who goes on a little “ bust’? and spends the evening at No. —, loses his watch and ket-book ; is ‘sure he lost them there,’* but lon't know which of the young ladies got it, thinks —— got it, on the whole. ‘ Well,” says the Guard, ** we'll go to the station and get a warrant.’ “Oh, no,”’ cries Mr. A. B. in alarm, “I don’t want my name mentioned in connection with it. You 2 and get the money for me with- out a warrant Such instances are of hourly occurrence, and the officers can only smile at the verdancy of in- dividuals who suppose they will lay themselves liable to a prosecution by acceding to such de- mands Ov Suxpar Scnoots—The Rev. Mr. Hol- mead, of Grace Church, Island, on last Sabbath spoke of the hopeful condition of the Sunday School of that Church, which from smail begin- rings bas = up to number some 123 pupils. it has, in fact, increased so rapidiy as to cause the library of the school to be quite Inadequate to its needs, and it is proposed to givea pic-nic and excursion down river for the benefit of the said library on the *th of July We have heretofore expressed our opinion in regard to the superior chances of enjoyment upon Sunday School excur- sions over all others, and in this case epee is there the added pleasure of aiding in an excel- ient work. The excursion boat will leave her wharf at § o’clock a_m_., and return about sun- down, visiting Fort Washington and the White Hovse on her trip Youne Mex’s Litegary Association —We take pleasure in noticing the organization of asso- ciations of young men for the purpose of mutual improvement. Snch an association was formed last night, at Central Academy, under the title of the “Edward Everett Debating Society.” With some of its originators we are well ac- quainted, and know them to be young men of in- tegrity and fine natural abilities. We shall watch the career of the new Society with much interest ‘The following officers were elected for the en- suing year: Win. H. Phwell, President. Charles Lammond. Vice President. James O. Cléphane, Secretary John C. Comell, Treasurer. Ix tHe Navy Yaro.—The “Plymouth”? was towed out into the stream yesterday, from her moorings atthe Navy Yard, by the steam tug Gay. and started on her experimental trip. At the same time the ‘Fulton’? was towed out by the Wide Awake, and her pilot managed, when at the spot the Minnesota was run aground, to steer also wide of the mark, and the ‘‘Fulton”’ was run plump on the mud. $bh< was hauled off finally without much delay or damage. She goes down to Aquia Creek to try her new boilers and machinery ; and if found to be all right, she will, after returning to Washington to take on board her officers and crew, proceed to Norfolk toawait orders from the department. She is to be in the command of Capt. Jobn J. Alma. Bisvor BYRNE AND Uis Successon.—We learn that the bull confirming the late nomination of the estimable and revered Father Byrne, of this city, to be the Roman Catholic Bishop of Pitts- berg. has reached Washington, and that Bisho; B. {is consequently preparing soon to sever his connection with bis attached congregation of St. Matthews. Father Charles White, of Baltimore, now the editor of the Catholic Magazine, is to succeed Bishop B. as the pastor of St. Matthews. He is a clergyman of high character and literary at- tamments, second to those of no other in the country. His selection will doubtless prove a fortunate one for the interest of the Church, and bes congregation also. But it was frustrated by the wakeful- ness of a colored woman on the premises, who heard the noise and gave the alarm. F. Page and J. 8. Pennybacker, for $2,000. ImPROVEMENTs—On Missouri avenue, of rather Missouri street, the gutters have been repaved and curb stones reset from 4} street to 6th street. This improvement was not commenced a minute too soon. That ugly crossing at the junction of Pennsylvania avenue and 6th street; is, we are glad to see, in an advanced stage of repair. The improvements on D street, in the way of paving and sidewalk-widening, have given a wonder- fully smartened-up air to that locality. The in- creased travel upon this street has made some such repairs upon this street imperatively neces- sary. Picxrockets Azovt.—Last night, a gentleman from Louisa county, Va., named 8. J. Bagby, ar- rived by the cars in this city, and while passing from the depot to the Exchange Hotel ina hack, discovered that his money belt, which he had in his pocket, had been stolen fiom him. It con tained $650 in gold, except a note of the Drovers Bankaf New York, of ten dollars value. The police were immediate set to work, but have not yet obtained a clue to the thief or thieves. Anotuer Rurat Cemetery.—The Cathol'c clergy of this city have purchased in the neigh- borhoed of forty acres of land f:om Mr, Fenwick, for a cemetery for the use of the Catholic con- gregations of Washington. The site is a beautiful one, being immediately opposite the Sp:ing Tav- ern on the old Baltimore turnpike. It is a sweet, retired locality, and commands a delightful rural view. ‘“Surpixe.’’—This is the term used by consta- bles to denote that parties who have given bail for trial are running away. Itis Teported about town that sundry persons who are under security for their appearance at court, for offences connect- ed with the recent riots, are ‘sliding.’ The re- sponsibility of securities will probably be tested Covert or CLamms.—Present, Judges Blackford and Scarburgh.
