LOCAL INTELLIGENCE, ‘Txz Scnvot Examinations —The senior de- partment of Primary school No. 5 Third district, under the charge of Miss L. R. Hilton, was ex- amined by Dr. McKim, in the presence of alarge sudieneeae parents and friends, who were appa- rently mach pleased with the exercises. Messrs. Russel and Hanson were also nt, thereby evincing their continued interest in our public schools. The pupils acquitted themselves with credit, t ‘h the greater part of them have connected with the school but a short time. The nee of the ports was remarkably fine, and great credit to Miss peg ~ assist- ant teacher, who has been their | in this delightful study. We shall refer to this school again in our account of the examination of Miss Simonds’ pupils—the junior de, ment. The-Janior department ist Primary school, hird Aistsies was examined by Dr. C. W. Da- vis Miss St Johns, the teacher of this school, has shown herself to be well qualitied for the po- sition she holds. The children enswered ve promptly and correctly. and evinced great attach- mentto their teacher. The order observed was excellent, and the improvement msde very mani- fest to the numerous parents and visitors. Primary school No. 5, Second District, Miss F.. T. Ward, teacher, was examined by J. C. Hark- ness. Though this school had labored undér dis- advantage two months for want of aschool-room, the examination was perfectly satisfactory. ‘he examination of the first class was particular- dy in ling, Leta me marked ax showing unqualified progress—also in arithmetic. ‘The whole of the examination gave evidence of com- mendable improvement, notwithstanding the in- terruption which took | ng in the progress in March and April last. Miss Ward, as a teacher, ix emjnentiy qualified for her position, which she fils with distinguished success. Having been educated im the Public Schools, ber manner of bringing out the capabilities of the pupils when & slow tendency to apprehend is evinced, is re- markable. Primary School No. 4, Second district, Junior SS Miss Laura A. Reed, teacher. This xehool ts, in its appearance sud character, bi; bly attractive and interesting ; it is composed of boys and xirls, most of whom are very young. The examination was under the direction of T. J. The school is reinarkable for the ood order which is maintained, and she rules = affectionate measures, not having occasion to use the rod, except in rare e¢ encies. She ses. in an eminent degree, the qualities of overning by kindness, and chooses to elicit the ove and respect rather than fear of her pupils. Mr. Buddington at the close of the examination made an address, in which he stated that the school excelled in reading. and he had visited many schools in the North which could profit by the example of desire to learn, correct deport- ment, and affectionate regard, which the pupils evinced. A very interesting circumstance in the examination took place at its close, wherein a preminm was awarded toa yore in each depart- ment who excelled in every branch of the exam- ination. In the senior department the award was made to Lizzie Stuart, a modest, bright, and teresting girl of twelve years, and in the junior department to Johnny Riggles, six years of age. The premiums were awarded by one of the trus- tees of the Second District, it being a matter not in connection with the usual annual awards of the trustees. On the platform, con- spicuous among the assemblage, sat his excel- * lency, the President of the United States, who re- mained an attentive listener during the whole of the performance. After an appropriate and etfee- tive prayer by the Rev. G. W. Sampson, Mr. Jeffries of Virginia, introduced Mr. C. W. Hass- Jer of Washington city, to the audience, who delivered an eloquent address upon the English language. His speech evinced a deep research into the origin of all languages, and particularly of the primitive simplicity and purity of the Anglo Sayon, showing that while upon the con- tinent of Europe the dialects were variously dif- ferent,-yet with us there was no marked distinc- tion between one extremity end the other. [le urged —s his bearers to preserve inviolate the purity of the Anglo Saxon language, and referred iu @ most eloquent manner to the Hon. Edward Everett of the —— day as its fair expounder, and distinguished exemplar. The next speaker, Mr. R. A. Mallery, of Penn- sylvania, was introduced by Mr. Rowe, member of the Enosinian Society.—au yject = « Phe privi- leges and responsibilities of 2 Christian sebolar.*? The sentiments contained in Mr. Mallery’s ad- dress were such as should elicit the profound at- tention and Learty approbation of every lover of liberty. The sj er gave eloquent utterance to the thousand beneicial results ensuing from a correct, intellectual and moral training. The third speaker, Mr. 1. 1.. Johuson, of New Jersey, was introduced by Mr. Jetfries—subject : “ College Life.”? One would suppose, from the manner of the speaker, that he was well {nitiated in the hardships connected with the life of acol- jegiate stadent. In imournfut strains he spoke of the dreaded tones of the College beli, the awful sammons to scholastic duties, the +- corm bread and molasses’? placed before the students “to supply the cravings of exhausted nature,’ and the “ aromatic fumes of weak coffee,”’ as it im- mated the breakfast room of the care worn aad appetiteless students. This address created ueut and long continued outbursts of laugh- rom the audience, who testitied their sympa- thy in this hearty manner with the suffering col- lege boys. ‘The celebration passed off most pleasantly. Tar River.—There were no arrivals at the wharves this morning. The pile-driving operations at the west draw of the Long Bridge, which have been suspended for the last two days on account of the high winds, were resumed this morning, and the work goes prosperously on. The steamer Collyer was inspected yesterday by Messrs. James Curran and Jno. T. Fowler, of Baltimore, U.S. Inspectors. She was reported generally in good condition, with the exception of her steam drum, which nires some slight Tepaifs; nothing, however, calling for her long detention atthe wharf From four daystoa week will probably see her in trimand voady to resume Ler customary trips on the line. Two sloops were launched from the ways of Mr. Armstrong, at the foot of Eleventh sireet, where they have been undergoing repairs, the Geo. Douglass and the —— De Leon. ‘The former not having her mast set, nor tiller rigged, came uear going down the river. Two men who were ou boaid, however, after rome hard poling suc- ceeded in getting ber ashore and making her fast. The steainer Engincer is being newly painted at Matthugly’s wharf, One week more will see her in complete condition to take her appointed station on the Rappahaunock r: ‘The Powhatan brought up f- Richmond this motuing thirty-five Knights Templars and fifteen Master Masons to join in the exeursion of the Washington Masons to Mouut Vernon to-day. They were received at the wharf at half-past seven o’clock, by a committee of Washington Knights, and their line formed on the deck of the steamer, eee the most brilliant spectacle imaginable; the beams of the early sun lighting np the silver and gold insignia of the O:zder, while they went through the mystic forms of safutation and reception, their cross-formed sword bilts sparkling with brilliant effect. The lock of the street door has apparently been tampered with, as on one occa- sion, some morning’s ago, it could not be opened without difticulty. What makes the loss the more annoying to the proprietor is the fact that he had just derided upon having a watch kept on his premises each night. From the quantity of goods :emoved. it is evident either that several persons were con- cerued in the robbery, or that they made a num- | P. ber of trips. The police 2re on the alert, and the alarm has been given in all directions by the telegraph, and ‘we hope to be able to record in our next issue that the guilty parties have been detected. Robt. Ryland, President of Richmond Col- lege, Va. The subject chosen was the abporting slavery question, and was handled, we ni hardly say, with much ability by the distin- guished speaker. He commenced by giving an outline history of Columbian College ; spoke of his early acquaint- ance with the surrounding scenes, and of the associations had there in former days with students Le paige almost every State in the Union, and of the unanimity and good feeling which characterized their intercourse. A striking contrast was drawn between those times and the present, when disordered sectional feeling is wegen. ‘hese reflections, he said, lead to the moment- ous inquiry, ‘Shall the Union of the States be preserved /’’ He said that there had been a time when to propound this question for discussion would have m deemed a sacrilege, but now the discordant sentiments entertained by the ul- traists North and South, rendered the question oue of necessity. The speaker proceeded to handle with great se- verity the extremists of either section, who for personal or political agyrandizeinent would spec- ulate in Republican nations as they would in stocks. Inconclusion be remarked upon the chris- tianizing influence which the institution of slave- ry has exerted upon benighted Africa. ‘The address was listened to with marked at- tention throughout Depot ror Stotsen Goons.—Last night, Delia Hazell, colored, who kept a house on B street north, near the canal and 6th street, was arrested for receiving stolen goods, and this morning was committed for further hearing by Justice Donn; but was released on ball. Her establishment has received the especial attention of the Guards and Police for months past. ‘This morning watchmen Klopfer, Horner, and Dove searched the honse and took from thence a furniture-car load of dry goods, jewelry, groceries, &c. Tney were con- veyed to the Central guard-house for identifica- tion, This dis; reminded us of a similar haul made by the is and police during Captain Goddard's time, in the alley between 6th and 7th streetsonD Among the articles, was some silver ware, ma:ked W.S.S.; several daguerreotypes, breastpins, earrings, shawls, counterpanes, quilts, Piano covers, table-cloths, crumb-cloths, dress patterns, horse-blankets, carpering. shoes, gin- ger, Champaigne wine, &c., foiming a stock am- ly sufficient to set up a variety store. The ques- ion now is, who are the owners of these goods? An inventory of them is being made = Captain Mills, and by the guards who made the arrests, and the is will remain at the Central guard- house to be identified. After remaining a short time the woman went out, and. a@ young lady in the house discovered that her drawer had been opened and robbed of various articles of clothing.
